While even the PSP version is not a great game by today's standards (the original wouldn't meet even the standards of the early 90s), it must have been seen as something special at the time for a reason. At any rate, it has led to some great games (starting with II in my opinion).

I loved FFI. It has that special something that allows me to keep playing it over and over every time they re-release it, and it never gets old. I think the simplicity is the key to its lasting success. It was a great mainstream console game back when it came out, and nowadays it still is a great game by casual game standards. I mean c'mon, it certainly is more satisfying to play on your phone than FF:All the Bravest, amiright?

FFI: one of the only flawless Static-Time-Theory stories ever, and probably the only video-game one, considering the whole point of a video game is, y'know, free will.

Add Airborne Brigade to that list as well. I play it once in a while and it can be mindless fun for a little while -- until your LP runs out and you have to wait six minutes to even attack the next enemy.

FFVIII may fall into that category as well. Though I've always been convinced that Ellone and co. couldn't change the past if they tried (and they did try) because they didn't realize they were stuck in a time loop in the first place, the fact that everything they do is predestined somewhat removes the free will element there as well.

If anything, FFI may be a stronger case for free will than FFVIII, seeing as the time loop in that game is broken.

Oh, right, yeah, nvm, FFI's plot is full of holes ha ha.

And you're right, of course, about FFVIII. I remember nodding along to your Ultimecia/Time FAQ like it was broadcasting what was in my head.
