Overly Long Usernames

Satsu, change your username, fgj.
He's either teasefully ignoring you or has no clue that this is about him :P

I'll remove them if enough people think it should be done.
Well then we're back to the "you gotta have x amounts of friends on the forum to push through a suggestion" which I really don't think is fair.

Do as we do in the fault handling word - set the ticket to 'pending customer' and write "if we haven't heard from you until 12 we will consider the issue being solved and close this ticket" - as if he hasn't done anything, go bananas on his username :monster:

Edit: Am just kidding of course. I'm really neutral in this matter, I'm just ranting and getting involved in stuff out of pure boredom.

TBH I agree that people should put whatever they want BUT, now I will talk as neutralish as possible. In my computer it looks perfectly fine, but its just weird reading and then paps! An extremely long username. I am with Drake here. Its just weird. But that's just me. I don't know either of them so, I'm as percerptive (Is that the word?) as possible.

This honestly should be fixable by removing nowrap elements from the columns and specifying a fixed width for them, but that would probably bring its own problems. I'll remove them if enough people think it should be done.

Is it really a big deal just to try it? Is it hard to put back if it does cause other problems? Because if not then at least two people having the issue seems like enough for me. But obv I don't know the technical details of how you actually 'remove nowrap elements'.

I'm pretty sure he meant it's the fixed width that causes more problems than it solves, Brooke.

We changed our page width at work. About a month of formatting I had done had to be revised since the width change buggered everything.

Also, +1 on not having an idea what you mean here, Jess.

Perceptive is the closest word, but makes no sense in context.

Ya, as I said I don't know how it works, but IF it's not too much trouble and IF we can put it back to where it should be if it does mess things up then I'd say it's worth a shot.

tbh if I had this issue it would probably be bothering me too.

Have the people who do have the issue stated OS and browers they use? Maybe we can figure out if it's a compatibility thing?

I actually had this problem on my PC. It was a bit annoying, but I never bothered to complain about it. I was using Firefox then. I'm on a Mac and I'm using Chrome now, and I haven't had any problems. But, is really that difficult to make it cut off and leave an ellipsis like it does for thread titles in the Top Ten Stats at the bottom of the index page?

This happens to me sometimes, but I don't really care, to be honest.

I'd say clicking a spoiler tag and having an image that stretches the browser is far more annoying to me personally, really.

There probably is a pretty easy way to make it display dots after a username approaches a certain length, but that would require looking at vBulletin's hideous source code, and I'm not even sure I am capable of comprehending it at this stage. There doesn't appear to be anything written to do this for any version of vB past 3.0 either, although it's possible I'm just not using the right search terms.

I'll just remove the nowrap component from the last poster column for now. If this causes problems let me know.

personally i think that's a little more irritating than the usernames but idk, i never had a problem with the username length. for anyone that did does it look any better for you?

See if it looks better now. I removed nowrap from the wrong part of the template apparently.

I obviously knew it was wrong. But shame on me for having English as a second language and not knowing every word.

No one's blaming you or shaming you. We're just boggled at what you were trying to put.

Yes, it is, :monster:. There is a CSS statement to cut off text, but it's only somewhat supported in certain versions of Internet Explorer; it's never been turned into an official standard. Not sure why; perhaps because content should be handled by code, not by markup or something.

The alternative would be to run it through a Javascript function that checks the length of usernames on certain pages and cuts it off.

And another alternative is to just up the limit of username length. That's the easiest of 'em all really, :monster:.

i could probably make it an option whether to wrap or move down onto a new line. i'll probably work on this soon since it appears people are divided on whether it's better one way or the other.

OLOL I just came across this thrad :wacky:

The thing is that I run off a 1440x900 resolution so on TLS my username doesn't really skew anything major when I view it.

I sort of get how it can be annoying to people, but honestly I've never really given it much thought? Besides how awfully skewed the chatbox was (which is now a non-issue for obvious reasons :monster:)

It's also wrapped properly in threads, but it does do that thing that Drake pointed out for subsections. Maybe try and do dat thing so the subsection bits wrap it the same way?
If it becomes too much of a hassle I could always just change the username, since I'd been planning to do it later at some point.
But I didn't realise how offensive it was to some people here.
