That makes me cringe.

But, I thought I made a thread for this awhile ago. If you haven't heard of it yet, it's supposed to be a prequel for The Wizard of Oz, focusing on Oz's rise to power. James Franco will be playing Oz. It also stars Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Abigail Spencer, and Zach Braff.

Why.

I mean, Sam Raimi is a capable enough director. But still. Why.

Why is it a bad idea? You don't like Oz? You don't think there needs to be a prequel? (although there are a bazillion stories written about Oz, making a prequel far more legit). I think if done right, it could be good.

I really don't see why The Wizard of Oz needs a prequel. The film is a self-contained story, and it is perfect as it is. If they were adapting L. Frank Baum material that got left out of the original film I would be somewhat less sceptical, but even still I can't imagine it doing the original justice. It also doesn't help that Hollywood doesn't seem to know how to do good musicals anymore. Of course, they could look at this as a reboot that isn't intended to be looked at alongside the original film (I have no idea whether this is going to be a musical or not), but if they're not making it in the same idiom as the original film, then that leads me back to my original question. Why.

I really like The Wizard of Oz, but I have to confess I don't see any way a prequel would add anything to the story. It could be done well, I guess, but I see almost no chance of it coming even close to the territory of the original.

I really wish they'd just maybe do a remake of Return to Oz and then do the rest of the books but RtO is really disturbing and they'd probably have Tim Burton direct it and then I'd rip out a piece of my soul anyway what was this post about

oh yeah

seems interesting. i don't mind prequels, i mean i do love wicked after all but

after looking up the writers i'm just like eeeeeeeeeeeeh

Who is Zach Braff going to be? :shifty:

Tinman, gotta be Tinman (assuming he's even in this)

I'm hoping that it won't be a musical but.... and don't get me wrong I love the original film (and Return to Oz too) but... I just don't like songs in films these days y'know? They're all quite forgettable, and I just find that they're something to be endured.

Yeah, put me down as plus one for not that interested.
Adapt the original material if you want to make more Oz. Do not make more of your own crap like Wicked- well, not like the book, anyways- when there is so much you can actually focus on. You could make an entire TV series on the various Oz books!

I don't see the big deal. The Wizard of Oz has such a rich history of adaptations it's at the point where it can be interpreted in a way that's entirely new without compromising the original. It's like Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland in that sense.

Though to be perfectly honest, I was confused by the thread because I thought it was about this project, for which I am far more excited for :D Steampunk Wizard of Oz, oh my!

I have nothing against Oz Adaptations and Homages in and of themselves-A webcomic I love is an extended Wizard of Oz joke, for one- but there have been so many shitty ones that I'm less than optimistic about them.

im a bit worried by the trailer, admittedly, cause oz as a canon tended to revolve around female characters (like dorothy and ozma) rather than men, and that always made it more interesting to me.

hmmmMMMM
