I made an Aerith painting in art lass the other day, my teacher doesn't really like unrealistic stuff, and basically dismisses it as not "art worthy" so I was wondering what people think.

art worthy? art doesn't have to be realistic to be considered art. your teacher sounds like a pretentious douche, imho :monster: and i really like it! something about her lip off though

Your teacher's opinion on art does not define what is or isn't art. What a moron.

As a former would-be art teacher this digusts me. She's basically written off 90% of all art stuff ever created in one fell swoop. Nice goin' teach!

I mean, its important to be able to draw stuff in proportion if you want to do that, but its not the be all and end all, unless your going to be a technical illustrator...and most of that is done on computer now anyway :monster: And in proportion doesn't even mean 'realistic'. Classical christian art is in proportion but it ain't realistic

I like this Zealkin, I'd agree that the lip/mouth needs a bit of tweaking to fit in with the 3/4 angle of the head, probably make it a little smaller and move it back towards her neck/jaw if that makes any sense? I really like the eyes, theres a real glow about them.

yeah she considers this to be anime style...

Yeah i think i went a bit too far with the fullness of the lips, makes prefect sense.

I based this off of the "impressive eyes" line so I'm glad you noticed them :)

What?! Really?.... I mean, I know the boundaries of what is considered anime style have changed over the years but....I don't look at this and immediately think 'anime'. It could be considered illustrative or stylised but not anime. Your art teacher isn't coming off well here

EDIT: I don't know if youre at school or college here, but you should just do your own thing. It's not a teachers job to impose their own ideas of what art is on the students. Their role should be to facilitate and advise to help you achieve what you want to do. Whatever happens don't let her put you off ;)

Yeah apparently 3-d rendered game characters count as anime :/

I'm in highschool, but to be fair this is for the ap exam, it's a breadth piece, and apparently anime-like things don't score well on it. What really gets me angry is the way the supposed "high art society" defines cartoons/anime( even if that wasn't what I was going for).
I mean I can understand some crappy anime/manga work, but that's art can be crappy in ALL fields/styles and she continues to say that the style is trite, isn't ALL art trite when you look at the big picture? >.>

I hate art snobs. Fucking local art society is full of 'em (or at least was 5 years ago). In my situation it was because I didn't do abstract art, preferring to do realistic art. I have no issue with whatever a person wants to do. Your art is your art.

Nice work, by the way.

I had an art teacher in highschool who was pretentious and made me hate everything. :/

Basically if you couldn't draw in her style you failed.

bitch

*is still bitter*

That being said, you have some nice paintings, Zeal. I especially like the very first one you posted of Aerith. You did a great job on her face. :)
