Grinding is easy, but that snorlax was hard. I had to either paralyze, put him to bed + dream eater or use the elemental stats to defeat it.

Damn right, it's as ForceStealer says. inability to evolve pokemans, and releasing them once they evolve. I mean wtf man.
Ash was the worst Shonen character staple to me ever since I saw other animes, he depicts inability to be somebody at life (depicted in the anime and the first movie lol) other than being with his pokemans, usually relying on Misty and Brock for his basic needs, whereas other shonen charas display some independence Lol. Not disciplining his charizard and releasing/storing his power houses is another sign of his idiocy and as you say, ineptness as a trainer. Frankly, Gary Oak should be the main lead. He actually has a life and can kick serious ass (although he does suffer being pwnt on some occassion)

It was only after his Charizard began to respect him that he released it. It's not that they can't... it's that he doesn't want them too. He stopped Bulbasaur from evolving in the Bulbasaur Garden eps, he will NEVER use a thunder stone on Pikachu.... and if something DOES evolve, it takes two or three seasons for it too.
....and then he releases it because it will mate with someone/take care of its herd/just doesn't wanna be with him anymore.
In Plat the upgraded Elite Four and Champ are between 60-70. And Red was 70-80, he still has the highest lvl to date.
