Random question about Reno

Maybe he's one of those people whose apparent eye color varies with the lighting? I got the impression Reno was 24-25 in the OG. I feel like ACC pretty much gave every other character a mix of blue/green eye color unless they were supposed to have brown or, in Vincent's case, red.

Speaking of which, didn't ACC also darken Tifa's eye color? Depending on the source, it's almost red but I'm pretty sure in the OG they were a noticeably lighter shade of brown.

Well, the game is pretty old, and the hand-drawn designs were made by pencil and paper back in 1990's, so the design of the characters back then were old and scratchy. Plus the computer technology wasn't high-advanced quite yet and we also have to remember that FFVII is the very first final fantasy game to be in 3D render.

I always thought that Reno's eyes were close to a blue topaz with a small hint of green. I'm thinking people are mixing up Reno's eye colour to Axel's/Lea's since his eyes were more in the sea-green variety.

But then again, if anyone's a fan of Ice Age, you would notice that Diego's eye colour changed too from Ice Age 1 to the rest of the films in the franchise. So I'm thinking that they decided to change the eye-colours in the characters eyes in the later installments of Final Fantasy VII.

Then again, I've always loved the blue eye colour because they are so beautiful. I'm stuck with a boring black-brown colour for my eyes.

I got the impression he's 24 in the OG too.

In regards to Tifa, I would say that her eyes are a nicer shade of brown than they used to be. They used to be almost the same (if not the same) hue as the reddish gloves she used to wear.

I think Reno must be at least 3 or 4 years older than Cloud. I can't imagine him being younger than that if he's considered a veteran Turk. Unless shinra recruits kids to protect their company's greatest secrets.

Nah, I'm pretty much convinced that Reno is 3 years older than Cloud, and that Zack is 2 years older than Cloud. My best guess is that Reno was recruited when he was maybe 14/15. Plus, I think he's pretty close to Tseng who was also recruited at a young age and trained and mentored by Veld.

I like Tifa's nicer shade of brown myself, because her original eye colour looked a bit creepy.

I think ShinRa recruits both teenagers who end up stumbling into the company in one way or another, or young adults(though I think Legend is in his early 30's when he finally returns to the Turks) who voulenteer or not. Plus, Zack become 1st Class at the age of 17.

And we all know how Shelke was taken to Deepground when she was only nine years old.

Well, the army recruits at 14. Even at 24, he could have ten years of solid service behind him.

Similiar thing with Tseng, I think. So I think the earliest they recuit the Turks are early teens, though in Cissnei's case, due to her skills at such a young age, not to mention being an orphan, I think we can agree that she was recuited and trained from 8/9 years old and because she was very smart, they decided to have her join the Turks and that's why she was known as the youngest person to ever join the Turks.

From what I think, I think she's the same age as Cloud.

Wow. And I just read that Cissnei might have been as young as 8 when she was recruited... Guess I was wrong. Shinra really does have kids guarding their secrets!

Don't forget a group like the Turks probably doesn't have the best life expectancy. Wasn't Vincent also supposed to be pretty high up by the end of his time as a Turk?

I'm pretty sure I've seen Reno's eyes described as green a couple times, though I've also seen people refer to Zack's as purple, which doesn't really make much sense to me. The fandom also insists mako adds green to eye color, based on most descriptions I've seen of Cloud's eye color.

Well, back then, ShinRa was just a small business in the time of Vincent being 27(Thank Hojo for that, ugh). I'm not sure about Vincent's ranking back then, but then again, that man is still full of mysterious that he doesn't like being open about.

I keep seeing blue in Reno's eyes. I think Zack's eyes were more of a darker blue before he was injected with both mako which made his eyes glow bright blue, and in Cloud's case, he had hints of green in his eyes due to mako poisoning.

in-game, Zack's eyes look like the same color as his clothes. As we all know, those navy-bluish SOLDIER uniforms are rather purple. Come to think of it, Cloud's eyes look kinda purple in-game too, but we know better.

I guess I'm satisfied with Reno's eye color ranging from green to blue. Now it's just his age that bothers me.

Wasn't Vincent 27 when he went to sleep? I always thought that Vincent looked older than Reno, but when I compare pics from AC, he doesn't really look much older than Reno... Maybe only a year or two by appearance.

Well, I think still Reno's in his early/mid twenties myself.

Yeah, Vincent was 27 when he ended up sleeping for several years, though everyone pretty much thought he was dead before Veld found him. Plus, because of the Chaos gene and the Protomateria, Vincent is stuck in that appearence because Hojo unknowingly made him immortal(Check Case of Nanaki for that info).

I remember being quite surprised when I found out Cloud's OG uniform was supposed to be purple rather than blue/indigo. You have to keep in mind that the technical limitations of the time mean some colors were probably a bit off. For example, I could tell from the very beginning Rufus was blond but I can see why some people thought his hair was supposed to be orange.

According to BC, Veld and Vincent used to be partners, though I don't think it was mentioned how long before Veld became director that was. I think you're right about the physical age difference between Reno and Vincent. If Reno were 24 in the OG he'd be 26 in ACC, which'd be a year below Vincent's physical age. For the sake of consistency, I've decided to peg him as 24 if I ever write a fanfic where his exact age is relevant.

I think they had to pick colours that didn't have problems with the backgrounds in the games because the techology back then wasn't that high at the time. (I mean, come on, almost 20 years). I'm with you on that one when it came to limitations of the techs back then, and it does make sense that Rufus was blonde, just a different kind of blonde.

Who knows when Veld was made director, but yeah, he and Vincent were partners. (Here's another interesting thing. Veld and Vincent-both names start with the letter "V"-Reno and Rude, both names start with the letter "R".)

I agree with you that Reno is 24 in OG and 26 in ACC, which would mean, despite him not making any appearence in DoC, he would be 27 right now.

Now, my question is what makes Reno rank higher than Rude? you'd think Rude would be more suitable for leadership.

My best guess is that because Reno had the leadership material and knowing how to make up plans, not to mention is more direct to people, similiar to Tseng and Veld, he was chosen to have higher ranking than Rude who, while is tough, he's shy and quiet, and doesn't tend to make orders as much as Reno does.

In that respect, their 3 year age gap difference doesn't really matter. It's what they do in their jobs as Turks that counts, but at the same time, it's not really a competition.

Considering you can join the military at 14, I always assumed the age of majority was much lower in the world of FFVII and by 18 someone could be a seasoned Turk if they joined young. (I like imagining Reno as an Artful Dodger street kid who joined the Turks as a young teen).

As for eye color: Did you know light eyes aren't actually a color per se but an absence of color. Light eyes lack the melanin required to produce a set color (as in brown eyes) and do not have a blue pigment (the have a lower amount of the same brown melanin as everyone else - the only true eye pigment is brown) so the blue color we see has to do with light hitting the eyes - so light eyes can appear to change color based on what they're reflecting.

I have a light eyes and depending on what I wear, my make up, the weather, my mood, my eyes can seem green or blue or grey usually hovering around blue or grey. Most accurately I'd describe my eyes as the same color as the ocean, which if you've seen the ocean isn't one color either. In the first picture, my eyes are pretty green. I'm not wearing green contacts - I'm just in a tree surrounded by lots of green.

While I doubt animators took enough time to actually have light eyed characters eyes change based on lighting and reflection of other colors - can just pretend that Reno's canon eye color is both - or we can use the fact his eyes used to seem bluer to head canon mako based drug use in his earlier years and angst about it.

Could be. His eyes look more blue to me. I think some people are mixing him up with Axel because the latter is based on Reno, with a bit of redesigning to make sure that Axel is not just a "Reno Copy".

They both are 25 in FF VII and 27 in AC.

At least Vincent's not a bad guy. But back to Reno, I've always admired his eyes and how it strikes out with his hair.

Actually, I like Reno's looks in ACC and CC. I do hope they'll keep him looking young in the Remake.(And I hope Quinton Flynn reprises his role as Reno(and as Lea/Axel in KH3). The only ones I can see getting replacements in voice acting are Hojo(since Paul Eiding made it clear that he hated voicing him, heck, I'm not surprised if the guy hated the character all together) and Nanaki/Red XIII. Hope most of the actors from AC and CC return to reprise their roles, including the Turks.)

As of now, there is no canon information whatsoever regarding Reno's background. We don't even know his birthdate, his surname, his place of birth or his blood-type. Anything you may stumble across that tells you otherwise is fanon masquerading as canon.

I suppose. I know a lotta people made fanfics on Reno's past, and yeah, there's still no word on his background. I still think he's 24 in OG/Remake, 25-ish in On the Way to a Smile-Case of ShinRa/Lateral Biography Turks, 26 in ACC, and despite not making an appearence in that game, 27 in DOC.

Actually, though this is pretty much false, but a few people I met actually thought he came from Mideel. Though I think it makes more sense that Reno came from the Slums.

And despite this is probably being fanon, as you say, I think the surname Sinclair kind of suits Reno.

I wouldn't want to know Hojo's background, though. Ugh. But then again, how was Genesis actually produced before he was adopted by his parents in Banora? No one knows much of his background other than the Gillian-Side of the Jenova project. But where was he actually found? What happened to his real parents? At least Reno is more human, just born with natural speed.

No offence taken. I was going for an un-Reno-like name. That's the point of it. Cool people aren't always born with cool names.

I think Vincent's the only FFVII character who's name isn't diagramed from another name or something. Besides, I like Reno better. I've seen/read worse names, though.

Snow from FFXIII for one example(Ugh, that guy gets on my nerves).

Well, they sure as hell(excuse my language) are taking their sweet time in editing the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII" section for updating it on it's future, unless, like me, they still think there might be actual hope for another title of the franchise.

That's the only section of the FFVII franchise that still hasn't been edited on info or whatever.

I've never liked the Sinclair surname and don't know why it's so wide-spread in the fandom. Nothing puts me off a fic faster than seeing 'Reno Sinclair' in the tags but that's just me. Anyway I'm kind of hoping that they don't actually expand on the backgrounds of any of the Turks. The minimal information we had on them was what appealed to me in the first place. Blank slate and all that. I wouldn't be opposed to getting the day and month they were born (so we can get fanfic/fanart birthday celebrations going on because yay to new fanworks) but I'm not fussed about knowing how old they are.

I agree! I was drawn to the Turks because they have their somewhat ill-defined job, a bit of sketchy characterisation (sketchy in both senses of the word) and a big world to run around in that's full of "white space" waiting to be filled by my imagination. I know quite as much about them as I want to know. If other people's headcanon is different from mine, no problem; I love a well-written fic that tells a story completely different from the one I'd tell. It's only when the same tired old story, or backstory, gets borrowed and re-written and re-written (like the "Reno was a child prostitute" one, which thankfully seems to have died the death) that I get a bit fed up.

Anyway if they did tell us how old they were it would turn out Reno was 17 in the OG or something which would just be stupid.

Defo not, as 100 Tiny Missions (a great favourite of mine) started being posted in 2008 and I've found quite a few references to Reno Sinclair from 2007, at least one on a discussion board where someone thought the name was canon, which suggests that it was already widespread by then.

Even more annoying is that old fics call him Zax for some strange reason. Fandoms can be weird about some things.

That would be because of his oddly spelled name in Japanese. One would expect that "Zack" would be ザック (zakku). However, it's actually ザックス (zakkusu), which would imply something like Zacks or Zax.

That said, Square has officially called him "Zack" in English, and "Zacks" is a stupid name. So Zack it is, thankfully.
(For some reason, I've found that people that insist on Zax also say Aerith is correct because Square said so even though they don't apply the same to Zack.)
