Reno's bad habits

There seems to be an agreement in the fandom that Reno smokes like a chimney. But I can't remember ever seeing him light one up, or even with a fag in his hand. Is there actually any evidence that he smokes? Or does it just seem like the kind of thing he would do? I double checked the BC trailer but he isn't smoking there either. Thanks.

PS My apologies if this doesn't seem like a very important question. I am posting on this forum because I get intelligent answers from people who know what they're talking about (hoping a little flattery will get her somewhere).

He's never smoked, so I have no idea what "agreement" you speak of. I'm not sure where fans got that idea from.

The smoking thing seems to be wholly based in fanon and part of his 'bad boy' image. Maybe out of all the characters, he seems the most likely to smoke?

There's a very definite fan-created persona for Reno; he's slovenly, lazy, kinda stupid, a bit of a slut, smokes like a chimney, drinks like a fish and swears like a trooper. The only ones that seem to be based in any fact are that he's slightly slovenly in appearance and in Wutai, he's more interested in pursuing his off-duty interests than pursuing Cloud et al. Fans (especially fanfic writers) have taken these and exaggerated them, creating a 'personality' for him.

I wouldn't trust Reno to smoke a cigar without burning half his face off, if AC is anything to go by. Rude, too.

And that's why fan fics mostly suck.

I don't think that necessarily follows. We, as the players, don't know everything there is to know about Reno. Maybe he does smoke. Just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. A user-created back story isn't always a bad thing, as long as it stays within the set parameters of the established character.

Of course, I could be biased what with being a fanfic writer an' all...:shifty:

But if he smoked 'like a chimney', I'm sure we'd have seen it. They rarely show Cid without one, for example. Often seemed to me fanfic writers wanted to use Reno's unkempt suit and agile fighting to relate him to Spike of Cowboy Bebop, who always has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. But that could just be my own logic.

And I think ACC made Reno and Rude look more competent, Masamune. A,
dropping the climbing scene
, and B, Reno's apparently one of the best helicopter pilots ever.

You know what's sad? Axel, from Kingdom Hearts, had to win respect for Reno back from me.

(In case someone doesn't get how they're connected, Axel is Reno. Like...literally. Tetsuya Nomura wanted to see how well received it would be if you took a popular character & re-made them in a totally different scenario.)

Even people who hate everything about VII like the quirky, comic relief Turks. That isn't the Reno & Rude I remember. I remember 2 badasses who were efficient at their job, & really rather dangerous in combat.

Needless to say, I was quite disgusted & disappointed with the apparent remakes in AC.

With Axel, you saw that the 2 sides could & do fit together quite well. Now, if only they would do better at showing that in the Compilation titles.

Well, judging from the BC scripts, there's literally none of that slapstick bullshit in there. They seem to be quite cool in BC. Don't know what they were thinking when they made AC.

And I still don't get Tifa's friendly reaction towards Reno on the phone. Did she already forget that he pressed the button that killed lots of people, including the actual parents of her now-adoptive son Denzel? Helloooo?

I kinda like how in ACC they'd insert the radio broadcast which discussed whether ShinRa should be held financially responsible. It would've been even more awesome if they talked about actually putting ex-ShinRa members on trial for committing crimes under order of the company. Including the fucking Turks, imo. :monster:

I never really got that. The last time you see them in the game they haven't exactly become friends with AVALANCHE, yet 2 years later and she's greeting him with a smile and a joke?

Well even by the end of FF7 AVALANCHE and the Turks had a bit of a respect for one another, the player has the option to not fight them in Midgar. And Tifa's killed her fair share of people too, remember.

And I really don't see how ACC is so inconsistent with the Turks of FF7. No slapstick? No one remembers Elena rolling down a freaking mountain because she tried to punch Cloud and missed?

I also remember Rude who was always awkward, Reno with that whole "don't step on the flowers" thing. 2 "badasses" that talked like schoolchildren about who they liked. And even then, so professional that they have crushes on their enemies? Reno, so "badass" to have exit lines such as, "We may be retreating, but we're still victorious." Come on.

Were they badasses? Absolutely, I love the Turks. But they were goofy from the beginning, don't kid yourself. The only slapstick in ACC due to them is Reno hitting Rude, but so what? They do get summarily trounced by Yazoo and Loz, but they're not human, even Cloud had trouble with them. AND, Reno and Rude do get the last laugh in a very badass conversation if you ask me. And as I said, ACC definitely shows that
Reno is the best helicopter pilot ever. Seriously, flying a helicopter between two overpasses? You try it. And Rude with that huge bazooka.

Sorry, I don't see this egregious inconsistency with the characters.

That's still no reason to be so friendly with them. It seems out of place, really.
Remove the laughing, and insert a slightly less friendly "I remember you" and that would've been fine.

Oh, I remember Elena always being the butt of jokes with her newbie-ness, but not so much Reno and Rude. They had their hilarious moments, but those were more funny then just "lol, I fell on my faec".

It wasn't all that comical, looked pretty painful. The only thing comical about it I guess is that they weren't injured. No one that I've shown the movie has laughed at the scene, they usually say something like "ooo" because it looks like it hurts. I suppose if they put a bit of blood on their faces that would fix it, but still, I don't think it compares to the cut climbing scene.

ForceStealer: My point is that AC upped the comedy part & dimmed the badass part. I know that Loz & Yazoo were out of damn near everyone's league. I know that the original Japanese text had Reno being more comical. Nevertheless, Reno had something of a ruthless efficiency that seemed to be completely gone. That's my point.

Tetsujin: I have some problems with BC, too. They seem to act more like SOLDIERs than Turks. It's not unbearable, but damnit, being unusually strong & taking out enemies in head-to-head combat is SOLDIER shit. Turk shit is more like sneaking around, trying not to get your ass killed. So...kinda like Dirge. As for Tifa's reaction, it made sense to me. Although, you bring up a good point with the destruction of the Sector 7 plate. Hmm...maybe there'll be something on that in Case of Shinra?

But Tifa deals with guilt over the people killed when they destroyed the two Midgar Reactors. (Although they only ever mention Reactor 1 for some reason) Tifa probably feels they've both made mistakes and that things have changed in two years. I don't agree with her, and I wouldn't greet Reno with a chuckle, but don't forget Tifa's character. And she also warns Cloud to be careful, so she didn't totally trust him.

And I still maintain that Reno and Rude's conversation on the other side of the tunnel is pretty damn badass. "Oh so you made this?" And the quick shot of his smirk before getting the last laugh is still pretty sweet.
I do see what you're saying to a point, don't get my wrong, it just seems like people act like the Turks were robotic killers in FF7 when they really weren't.
The far greater sin, if you ask me, is that the snapping has been absent from every single version of their theme in the Compilation, even the one from their own game! The snapping in that song contributed a lot to their badassery, I think.

Yes, this. The original Turk's Theme from FFVII is still the best, most badass and laid-back version of them all.

Heya guys, I'm new here so don't get mad if I do something wrong

Hi. Honestly answer this question...
Could you honestly hate Reno's guts? I mean I'm asking the person who's saying Tifa was so nice and all... He's too bright. Even without all the funny stuff, and when they came to get him in the game so he could fight with cloud, he claimed being off-duty and so... well maybe she knows about that. And she could've been being sarcastic you know.
Also.
I write fanfiction and I was wondering if you guys could read it and tell me if you think I got his character right. I posted here because in my story he does drink and have a lot of women, so I thought, maybe you could see if this is realistic for him? Anyway, I post on Fos-ff.net, and Piratesboard. My name on both sites is Dragoandnikki. :glomp:

In the English dub, I felt like Tifa's "Yeah, I remember you" sounded a little uneasy/suspicious. You get from "Case of Tifa" that she feels like she's personally responsible for peoples' deaths and blah blah blah, so that's the only way I can make sense of it.

And the whole smoking/cussing/badass thing? Definitely a fandom version of Reno, which I am rather partial to (if you want to see it done exceptionally well, look up Interface Leader on ffnet).

Sure, the Turks were still badasses in AC and they did get the last laugh, but I think Reno really did change between the game and the movie. In FF7 he was so cool and collected and didn't seem to take his job or Shinra too seriously (see his "professional/fool" quote). By the end of the game, he doesn't care to fight AVALANCHE anymore, and it's Elena you hear going on about the spirit of the Turks.

In AC, Reno seems to have a vested interest in Shinra returning to its glory. Oh, and he seems to have an adult onset of ADD because he's a complete spaz, and he runs like a dork.

Okay, I used to loathe Reno's guts, for many, many years with Cait Sith, because of one reason. He sends the Carry Armour at you, which is impossible to kill if you're not a skilled player, or new to Final Fantasy. That boss was a huge pain, and kept on grabbing my party and slowly killing them, one by one, for yeaaars.

I don't care if he says that he's off- duty after saving Yuffie from Don Corneo. He tries to slaughter you later on with that annoying, party grabbing machine.

No, they weren't. Everything Reno & Rude did had a Three Stooges punchline to it. Even the helicopter scene in ACC, which should've been badass, was ruined by another 'UH OH SPAGHETTIOS!' moment.

Agreed on the rest. Reno was a cold-blooded mercenary in the original game. He destroyed Sector 7 without batting an eyelid because it was in the line of duty. Yet he ditched Shinra the moment the writing was on the wall.

He's now become a gimpy pretty boy who's stickin' with Rufus becaaaause...?
He also stops to save kiddies mid-battle, and spazzes his nightstick at anything that moves. When a character suddenly earns fangurl notoriety, you know mistakes have been made.

Also, in reality, Tifa would've told Reno to get fucked.
