Resident Evil VII

That creepy little kid, I wonder if it is the "ghost" that appears in places during the demo (who also appears to be a girl, iirc). If so, now they have to provide some scientific explanation for ghosts, because I don't remember ghosts in previous games of the franchise. Perhaps it is some disease that makes people scary-looking, teleport around the place, and kill people :P. Of course, that's if the kid will appear at all in the finished product.

Yeah, I knew that :monster:

The funny thing is 'Resident Evil' as a title didn't give away any plot points for the original game. I played it thinking the zombies were supernatural up until about halfway (or whenever you discover the lab) If it had been called Biohazard I would have known from the outset and I don't think I would have found it quite as scary.

Sorry, didn't mean to patronize :monster: I did think it was interesting as I'm not aware of the Japanese series ever referencing the "resident evil" moniker.
RE is undoubtedly a catchier title, although it really has nothing to do with the series aside from the first one. It amuses me that they didn't think about what it would mean if there were sequels :P

I played the demo. It's...fine?

I don't normally say this sort of thing - mainly because I hear it used as an asinine criticism of a lot of horror movies whose strength lies elsewhere - but it's not very scary. It should be, all the ingredients are there, but it's just...not. I think because it feels like a collection of tropes from other recent horror games. It doesn't have much identity of its own.

To be fair, I only played it the once. I'd already deleted it before I heard there were other endings and things and wasn't sufficiently enthused to bother downloading it again. So perhaps I didn't get the intended experience of finding new ways to play. Also, it's entirely possible that VR is a real difference-maker in terms of scariness.

I'm also not convinced the game as presented would be interesting to play for more than maybe half an hour at a time. Shambling slowly through a cramped space looking for the next key item just does't seem like it would hold my attention for the length of a full game.

Heavy RE4 vibes going on. Really creepy, but I hope it's not all weird-controlled-humans. I want my zombies / creatures damn it!

I got no re4 vibes out of it, aside from run down building in the woods.
Not really interested in this anymore... The demo was fine, I guess, but it doesn't feel like resident evil, and I dont like those first person "try to hide" type games like outlast, or amnesia. Hell, I love everything about Soma, but I'll never play it because of that stupid mechanic of hiding.

Seems like Resident Evil in name only. Wasn't Ethan the name of one of the dudes in the demo thing?

Anyway, I don't mind exactly. As long as it's scary. Though I haven't felt particularly scared by this or the demo, unlike how I was with P.T. but I guess it's different playing it yourself and watching someone else.

I do wonder if these demos and trailers actually are a part of a marketing scheme aimed at building hype through misdirection, similar to what SE did with the FFVIIR announce, by first doing the PC to PS4 port announce.

After all, if I remember correctly the teaser they showed at the press-conference featured a brief glimpse of Racoon City.

This trailer also featured gun-play, promising action as well.

Are people forgetting that RE1 was a game largely about avoiding combat and conserving ammo, in an old manor, where finally you end up getting chased by a monster that's almost impervious to damage until you can finish it off with a rocket launcher?

Basically what I saw in this trailer seemed like a return to form in many ways mimicking the first title - minus the lab and quasi-science aspect of it.
Even first person perspective isn't new, as RE did this as early as on the PS1 with the Survivor games.

Hopefully, things will be shown to branch out as we get more information - with more than just a game centered around one family of crazies.

Wow. That was actually pretty damn good.

I love the return to the horror roots (I actually jumped twice whilst playing the demo) and the core aspect of a 'haunted house' style which enables an atmosphere which just blends perfectly with the first person gameplay perspective. The minor puzzles / key fetching feels like a return to old too.

The only negative I have at the moment is that I wanted Zombies over a crazed-infected family. But this has definitely gotten me pumped for January.

...problems that FF is going through
fixxxed :P.

It seems RE have successfully deconstructed what was scary about earlier games, and reclaimed the identity they've lost.

it's more than i want to know how it relates to this topic, but don't want to know what happens in ffxv :p

now i'm just in a horrible limbo of wondering what happens in ffxv that ties in with the direction of re7

It was in reply to Claymore's last paragraph, about the FF franchise having problems and trying to find an identity. My reply was in light of FFXV. Not a story spoiler, but an expectation spoiler based on my tastes.

Resident Evil VII has been released ... to a wave of favourable reviews.

Looking forward to picking this up very soon.

I've been watching a lets play and the nicest thing that happens to Ethan in the first 40 minutes is
falling off a ladder

I'm wondering if
The people in Resi 7 are like the villiagers in Resi 4. I seem to remember they were fucking mad and didn't that have something to do with Umbrella? but I'm totally out of the loop with the series since then so I could be totally off the mark or stating the bloody obvious. :monster:

@Interslicery: I've watched the playthrough of RE7. I haven't seen Outlast played, but have heard that some folks are making this comparison, and doing so as a criticism. I think RE7 is a blend elements of the RE franchise to date. Lots of survival horror, like that of earlier games, with some slaughterfests by the end of the game, similar to that of latter games.
I think the beginning is really good, and I wish they stuck with the formula that existed there for the entire game. Kind of loses me when the molded are introduced, and ammunition becomes ample, and the mystery element -- which is critical to horror -- drains away as the story progresses too :P. I do like how they tie it all together in the end, and the twist with grandma, but about half the game should have been cut :P. 3.5/5 stars.

Woah. A scary Resident Evil? Oh how I've missed you!

I played through the opening segment last night. The first person perspective is really effective, the atmosphere is incredible, and I jumped far too many times to count. The game seriously doesn't pull any punches, even from the start, and I'm absolutely loving it!

The only minor complaints I have is that I will forever miss zombies (they are a passion of mine) and I do hope that they are brought back in the next installment. And Ethan is a little lackluster so far in terms of his reactions to things.

Other than that ... this is incredible so far.

Ok... This part is pissing me off :/ I just got the shotgun
but I've only found 3 shells, total. So it's pretty inconsequential when it comes to dealing with these 3 fucking molded. I've been stuck here for like an hour.
I was really enjoying the game, but wtf with this difficulty spike?

Edit: OK..
so I killed the first one by point blank shotting his head, then spent 7 handgun bullets to the head to finish him off. Go to fight the other 2, one headshot and the guys still alive, so I go to use my last one, and it pops both their heads, even though the one who I shot before was in front and took most of the spread.
Whatever you say game.

Edit 2:
And I just realized that I got the shotgun shells that were in the area the first time I went down, and got killed by them before I realized I needed the shotgun first. But cause I didn't have the shotgun yet, my brain filed it away as unimportant items for the time being. So, when I did actually get the shotgun, I figured I'd take them out first and then get the items since I didn't want to have to get them over and over again when I died.
So... My bad :monster:
