Sephiroth: What the fuck happened?

Caring for your friends doesn't necessarily make you a 'good person'. The human psyche and how we have relationships with others is more complex than anime cliches would have us realize. You can care dearly about someone and have real, genuine love for an individual or individuals and still be the scum of the earth.

I'm not saying Sephiroth was a bad person post Nibelcrazy, but he wasn't necessarily a good guy, either. The perfect soldier, and reasonable, and sometimes even charitable, but ultimately a true neutral who steered the wrong way into crazy.

I assume you mean "pre-Nibelcrazy", not "post".

Sephiroth may have cared about his friends (all two of them), but he wasn't exactly the most compassionate guy otherwise. Remember when the bridge breaks in Mt. Nibel during the investigation there? They lose one of the regular troops who was with them, and this is Seph's response when Tifa points it out:

It may sound could, but we've got no time to search for him.

Tifa comments later that she indeed found him very cold.

That quote really doesn't put him in a good light when you think of how he locked himself up in the mansion later to read. They had time for that, huh? A more charitable interpretation would be that he was concerned about getting to the reactor before more could happen with the monsters, but he really didn't seem too concerned about it. (Plus he could have said something about coming back to look...) I think pre-crazy Sephiroth is just very pragmatic and cold until it personally relates to him. Which doesn't make him a bad person, especially considering who raised him and his environment, but true neutral probably is the best description.

I dunno, it could be that Sephiroth just didn't give a fuck about people and his friendship with the weirdo trio exists only because they are birds of a feather -- they are like him. Given his narcissistic tendencies (I'm being nice here, he's a bitch), I can see this no problem.

I don't think he ever thought Angeal and Genesis were like him, and if he did, he must have been in pretty heavy denial. I mean discovering all about Project G, and how Angeal and Genesis are total freaks in no way lessened, or made him in the least bit anticipate the worldshattering shock that Shinra just might have done something to him as well. And as soon as he did discover as much, he instantly tried to convince himself that he was the masterpiece of Professor Gast rather then his two inept lab assistants. His deal in CC to me seemed like "I always thought I was special, plus as a friend I should probably figure what's up with Genesis and Angeal's totally unrelated wierdness."

So yeah, I think him befriending Angeal and Genesis was more because he liked having people that can sorta kinda keep up with him around for a change, rather then thinking they could be special like him. I don't think Sephiroth thinks anybody is as special as him.

I've always wondered what the compassionate, yet sensible thing to say in that situation would be.

Maybe something like, "We need to investigate the malfunction at the reactor before the problems there can become worse, but we'll look for him as soon as we get a chance."

I think that would have sounded compassionate, but would have also kept the focus on the mission (which would have been the other soldier's duty as well in the event their roles were reversed).

Yeah, if they had time to sleep through the night after getting to Nibelheim, and then time for Seph to go lock himself up to read -- well, getting to the reactor may have been important, but it wasn't like they were racing a time bomb. He just didn't care.

Perssonaly I was figured that Sephiroth wanted to be able to wrap things up and get back to town before night fell, sinc eit would be more dangerous at night.

Dangerous for whom? Sephiroth wouldn't break a sweat against the worst Nibelheim has to offer. Okay, there's Cloud & Tifa too but I'm sure him and Zack would have it covered. Unless of course you mean the perils of the mountains themselves, which is a fair point.

As for 'that line', meh. I suppose in the overall context of Sephiroth's character it was designed to foreshadow what a cold bastard he was, but coming from your average squad leader, I would think little of it. He made a calm and calculated decision on the spot, which a person in his position is employed to do. They had no idea where that grunt was, or if he was even still alive. He could have been buried anywhere in dem dere mountains.

Well obviously Zack and Sephiroth could handle the monsters, but even in the daytime the terrain of thiose mountains looks pretty damn treacherous. Trying to wander around and find your way were you need to go when its pitch black out would be unwise, even for members of SOLDIER. Plus, fighting in said darkness could be hazardous as well. Miscalculate a dodge and you might sidestep a monsters attack only to find yourself falling off the side of the mountain.
