I can't believe we don't have a thread for this! (Unless we do...?)

Some of the Final Fantasy games (VII, XIV) give you a mechanic to name your own Chocobo. Other titles give you a canon name (examples below) or no name at all, in which case I usually name it in my head

Final Fantasy V
According to ffwikia, Boko is "arguably the most famous chocobo in the series." There is also Koko, whom you encounter in the late-game.

Final Fantasy VII
We all know Teioh, the black chocobo. The game randomizes your other racers, the possible names are: Aimee, Andy, Arl, Blues, Clive, Dan, Dario, Edward, Ellen, Fox, Gary, George, Graham, Grey, Harvey, James, Jenny, Joel, John, Ju, Julia, Knight, Lia, Ly, Marie, Mike, Nancy, Paula, Paule, Peter, Rica, Rober, Robin, Rudy, Sam, Sammy, Sarah, Sean, Terry, Tim, Tom, and Young. Dirge of Cerberus also makes mention of a Boco.

Final Fantasy Tactics
Boco again, this time s/he's owned by your enemy, but if you rescue her/him in Chapter 2 s/he'll reproduce asexually, these birds are subject to the same random names that goblins, ghosts, and dragons have.

Final Fantasy VIII
Boco and Koko are back in the Pocketstation add-on as "chicobos" and Boco follows you around while you ride your unnamed adult chocobo.

Final Fantasy IX
Your mount in this game is called Choco, but there's a wink towards Boco with the Black Mages naming their baby chicobo Bobby Corwen.

Final Fantasy XI
This one had a mechanic where you chose two words from a list, the words are compiled here: http://ffxiclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Chocobo_Names

Final Fantasy XIII
In XIII-2, there's a side quest involving several named chocobos: Haughty, Sloth, Wrath, Neid, Luxuria, and Greed. I think these were supposed to be named after the seven deadly sins? There's also a chocobo in Lightning Returns called Angel of Valhalla.

World of Final Fantasy
Haven't played this yet, but apparently there's a chocobo called Hyperion, which is probably the best chocobo name I've ever heard.

I'm probably missing a bunch but the above list basically goes to show that there's no reliable naming convention across the titles (or at all really) so I'm very curious to know what y'all have come up with! Here are mine:

Final Fantasy VII
I always name my FFVII chocobos the same thing, somehow getting the same colour/sex combination every time I breed them.
Yellow (1st gen): Raph (m) Ean (f) Geotell (m) Darla (f)
Green (2nd gen): Jinnak (m; named after my first D&D character)
Blue (2nd gen): Theara (f)
Black (3rd gen): Aok (m; named after another D&D character, a CN halfling)
Yellow (3rd gen): Primla (f)
Gold (4th gen): GOLDIE (it has been both sexes)

Final Fantasy Tactics
In my latest playthrough (the community playthrough) I renamed my best chocobos of each colour. My yellow was always Boco, my red was always Pyro, and my black was always Blackie. When they got replaced (and banished!) I named their successors the same thing, but numbered, so Blackie Jr.; Blackie III; Blackie IV etc.

In VII I would name the Chocobos after their rating/colour/sex. So a "Great" yellow Chocobo might be GreatF, while a black male Chocobo would be BlackM. Incredibly boring but it saves me having to remember which Chocobo is which when I'm choosing one to race at the Gold Saucer.

In XIV my Chocobo is called Lhusu because everything I've named so far has a XII theme. My character is Miriam Drace and my retainers are Landis and Kerwon.

The quest for a Gold Chocobo in FFVII goes as follows:

GreatM (or, GoodM) + GoodF (or, GreatF)

Then the blue chocobo is BlueM or BlueF
Likewise the green chocobo is GreenM or GreenF

The black chocobo is BlackM or BlackF

The gold chocobo is then left to be Goldie.

I reckon people can guess what the M and F means. (And fret not, I can explain what the adjectives mean ). For real, though, this is what I have always named them all. Creativity.

Yeah, I thought I'd seen someone else mention it. If the Remake includes Chocobo breeding/racing, which I expect it will, then hopefully its UI will include that information when selecting a Chocobo at the Gold Saucer so we can be more creative with our names.

Though having said that, I think I did once replace BlueM with "Blume", GoodF with "Goof", and so on. As long as it's clear what they are.

My only guess is that we're all utterly brilliant at making important decisions.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure exactly what I called the Wonderful Chocobo. I mean, I'm pretty confident I can make a good guess

Yup, for I too name FFVII chocobos after their rating/colour/sex, including any gold ones. I make an exception for black male chocobos who get called Teioh just for the fun of it. It started out as an experiment back when I was a kid and first played the game. I wanted to see if I could prevent the real Teioh from showing up if I had a chocobo of the same name. It didn't work of course but it's become a sort of tradition for me now.

In FFXIV my chocobo is named Levi after Leviathan. It's also blue and wears the Leviathan barding.

In FFVII I use the same naming scheme as Flint and RedXIIIWolf.

My FF7 chocobos' names were still uninventive, but slightly less boring than all that Blue>River, Green>Ranger (for...mountains or something), Black>Midnight, Gold>Golden. I don't remember the names of the yellow chocobos, but I hadn't played any of the other FFs, so none of them were Boko.

In FFXIV my first chocobo was Elsa, which now sounds like a Frozen reference but it was actually a reference to the ship in Xenosaga.

Er, I think I used to just name them after the Turks. And probably offensive things.

In FFVII, I remember naming them all with whatever I fancied
I made up a lot of names and wrote them down in a notepad to remember their stats and such. Pretty sure the notepad is either gone or lost somewhere in the depths of a closet I'm also pretty sure I named my golden female chocobo Serah.
Although I do remember that coming up with a bunch of creative names did make me lose track of if they were male or female several times...

I have a more interesting story about my XIV chocobo, whom I named Alamos (pronounced Al-ah-mos).
I have a fantasy series I've kinda written/have in my head (it's very much unfinished), and in the fantasy world there's these griffin-type creatures. They're sort of like bonded mounts for one of the races in the story.

My method for naming them is picking out names of wine brands I like. I like to walk through the wine isles in a grocery store and pick out names I enjoy, like Alamos, Erath, Risata, etc. So I basically went through this list of names and wanted my XIV chocobo that have one. Thus he was named.


Edit: Bobby Corwen is the best name for a baby chocobo ever XD

Chocobos feature in my D&D setting. None of the players have gotten them as mounts (they're more expensive than horses) but my players also write short stories about their character's backstories. One of the PCs was a desert priest, her mentor rode a chocobo called Klohwa. Another PC was an orphan who befriended a green chocobo owned by a knight, and the player named the bird Bahl.

In FF7 I go through various stages of Boco, Choco, and other "oco" ending names. I breed these suckers like mad so I don't put too much thought into them, though I sometimes name them after FF6 characters like Locke and Celes my Gold chocobo mating pair.

FF14 I take mad serious though. My companion chocobo (pure healer type) is named Enigma. My racing chocoobo is "Reckless Legend".

YES! She had the "Wonderful Chocobo" mating with the wrong one! It's supposed to mate with the Black Chocobo to get a gold! That was the first thing I noticed!
