Silly enemies

No matter how realistic and gritty FFVII gets I am convinced that Square will be aware enough of how important the classic monster designs are. The contrast between the often serious story and the ridiculous monsters is an integral part of FFVII's humor.

If anybody is doubting this assessment, then perhaps they may feel less doubt when observing the monsters from this list that ended up appearing in Crisis Core: Mover, Hedgehog Pie, Dorky Face and Foulander.

Time will tell if my gut feeling that *most* monster designs will return in the remake is correct or not.

I hope you're right . I hope they are able to keep some semblance of the game's silliness.

Since they're definitely keeping the cross dressing scene, I have confidence they'll keep a lot of the game's silliness in-tact. :awesome:

In playthroughs in which I feel like grinding, I generally use the grengalans outside Costa del Sol to do so. You have to wait for them ALL to come out for the full XP, but it's still pretty good for that point in the game while also being good for learning Limit Breaks.

I think one thing to note is that when most of us played it first, it was on the PS1 with shit level resolution and shit-tier TVs; I'm sure a lot of people were hardly able to recognise what they were seeing. Or maybe that was just me :monster:

(these are high resolution emulator rendered versions etc)

Yang is hands down (literally, look at that screenshot) the creepiest enemy in FFVII for my money. His attacks also take FOREVER. And he hits hard; I'm pretty sure I've had a game over against him.

Wouldn't you be excited if you lived alone in a basement and you got visitors for the first time in years?

But why do I not remember the pony?

He's in the North Cave. In the area with the Magic Pots, and appears with Christopher.

Well I remember Christopher. Mainly because a random enemy named Christopher is, well, random. :monster:

I don't know why but this is my favorite random enemy.

I should write a front page article. "Ode to the Triceratops Tank."

I found this on the Wiki earlier about Gighee:
The katakana for Gighee (a play on 'Gee-gee', an insulting nickname for a bad horse) can also be read as "Ziggy", the persona of David Bowie, "Ziggy Stardust". The model is largely based on this pun, looking like Ziggy Stardust, and with a guitar for a tail. Both Gighee and Christopher use song attacks, and Christopher uses an attack called Stardust March only if Gighee is alive.

In addition to a guitar tail he also has a cigarette on it. :monster:

The cigarette on the end of the guitar could be a reference to Eddie Van Halen. At one point, not sure if he does anymore, he actually had a cigarette holder built into the head of his guitars. So he would light up a cigarette on stage when he was getting ready to perform his big solo and then put the lit cigarette in the holder while he played. Some times he would even puff off the cigarette while playing.

Yeah, he wouldn't look out of place in Silent Hill. Especially as - as far as I can tell - he's got two baby heads.

The unknowns are pretty horrible too. Like literally what the fuck is going on there? Where they aboard the Gelinka already? Or are they deep sea abominations that got in after it crashed?

edit.: Unknown 3 freaks me out the most, because to my eyes it looks like it used to be a human. I can identify hands and a ribcage. It's horrific.

It was many years before I ran into Ying and Yang for the first time. I was mostly just stunned at an enemy I hadn't seen before. And then you just can't kill it. I think it game over'd me as well. Every time you hit it it raises it's stats, all the way to the max, but it attacks so infrequently you think surely the next attack can kill it.. They it wrecks your day.

I dunno, the first one would scare me the most. Those straight teeth with little points... it's nightmare inducing. :closedmonster: And yeah, them being so far underwater always made me wonder, are they natural nightmare creatures of the deep? Or were they mutated by some Shinra experiments and possibly aboard the Gelnika? Did they escape and make the ship crash by killing everyone on board?

Sunken ships with monsters gives me the willies.

Unknown 3 reminds me of Deathguise (which came later, obviously):

and at least one other monster from another game that I just can't put my finger on. I thought it might have been Achelous:

but they have only the smallest of similarities. I think there's still something else which I'm forgetting.

I don't even remember seeing some of the enemies from the OP. I'm sure I haven't seen every enemy in the game, but there are at least 3 that I don't really recognize.

And I know that VII had some seriously batshit designs, which made me wonder if they'll include the...funkier...ones in the remake, because I couldn't imagine seeing them in good graphics. It just didn't feel right. Then Force pointed out to me (maybe even in another thread if not in person) that FFXIII has

which are all a bit....weird, too, and that game had really nice graphics with realistically rendered characters. So I no longer think that the quality of the graphics necessarily has to be a hindrance when creating wacky shack enemies.

Are you sure you're not still just thinking of Deathguise/Doom Gaze/Deathgaze? He originally appeared in FFVI.

Anyway, the unsettling designs of those Unknowns makes you think they could be Jenova monsters (I think Shademp pointed this out to me once), but I can't see any way that would work with the plot. :monster:

That flowery one especially makes me think of Jenova, if only because Jenova was obviously based on The Thing from John Carpenter's movie of the same name, and at least one Thing monster had a flower-like look about it.

I'd miss Ghirofelgo if we didn't encounter him. Vincent should be one part of the horror show Shinra Mansion had become.
