I seriously cannot talk this movie up enough. The intro is excellent, then the opening sequence is really well done. Beautiful car chases everywhere <3
The general focus is on M and Bond's relationship, and a lot of the interaction between them is unspoken but so well done it's unreal. Due in large part to the awesomeness of both Judi Dench and Daniel Craig. I absolutely loved this aspect of the whole thing, I was moved by their relationship, especially the parts toward the end.
The villain is just pure brilliant. It's like old Bond, only improved. He used to work for MI6 and was M's "favourite" until 2006 when she gave him up, so the plot is deeply deeply personal. I was impressed by his performance. When he's got Bond tied to the chair and starts kind of feeling him up it was really uncomfortable, but I must admit I got a bit giddy when Bond said "who said it's my first time?" - Bi-Bond insinuations FTW, got some nice headcanon from that line. Even if it was just meant as a joke
Q IS FANTASTIC. Seriously, the things you doubt about the actor being Q are all pointed out by Bond and handled incredibly well, and I really love him as a new character.
Was really chuffed with Ralph Fiennes's role in the movie - what a great way to introduce a character. I love it when you think someone's going to be an asshole and they turn out to be awesome.
Similarly with the other "main" MI6 agent who is likeable and present throughout the movie - is introduced as MONEYPENNY. EPIC MOMENT.
But oh, oh the tears I literally shed towards the end. Bond and M travelling up to Scotland to the place where Bond grew up (Skyfall, a house in the middle of beautiful Scottish highlands) to fight with the villain, the focus on Bond's background being the title left ambiguous until almost the very end. And M dying. I was literally so shocked and sad because Judi Dench is IMO the best M ever and she's been a part of the Bond movies for such a long long time. It was really sad. And Bond's reaction. Omg, actual creys. I've never been upset at a human character dying in a movie before.
Which paved the way for Ralph Fiennes to be introduced as the new M. OMFG how amazing.
And there are loads of little things throughout the movie that are just an amazing tribute to the series, Bond uncovering a retro Aston Martin to drive M up to Scotland, MI6 being blown up and M's porcelain British dog that Bond hates surviving, that she leaves for him in her will.
