So I have Mass Effect (thread title updated)

My brother dumped a load of games on me before he went to China.

Anyway, I've never played ME1, nor will I be able to due to not having an eggs boggs or even a halfways decent PC.

So will I be missing out? Should I watch a letsplay of ME1 first or wot?

Tricky question. I started with Mass Effect 2 but I had the comic DLC that came with the PS3 version recapping the events of the first game and letting you carry decisions into ME2 (it's not very good at explaining anything that's happened though tbh, and you lose out on some random NPC stuff by not playing 1).

Mass Effect 2 is far superior to 1 in every single way though, so I say just go for it.

Actually, I can send you a Mass Effect 1 save file if you want rather than downloading the comic DLC? If you want to go read the plot of ME1 on the Wiki and make your own decisions I can use an editor to make you the right save file which you then load into ME2 (story decisions carry over all 3 games). Happy to assist <3.

Note that loading from a ME1 save file you still get to recreate your character in 2 (face, class etc.) so just tell me male or female and then your story decisions. I'll try to find a link for you.

EDIT: Oh crap I'm assuming you're playing on PC. This won't work on console.

there's a download version, which is what i got because it was on sale at the time. i'm not sure how much it is now but probably less than 26 monies (though you'd need the hard drive space for it which might be a problem if you are like me and fill everything with crap

Well ME2 on the PS3 comes with all of the DLC aside from Arrival (the very last DLC for ME2 that sets up ME3), so you'll have the comic.

I would recommend starting with 1 if that's an option tbh, but if you're not that bothered, read a plot synopsis of 1 to allow you to make your decisions in the comic when you start ME2.

Just start, I hadn't gone far into ME1 when I started the second game, and while I missed some things, ME2 was still a hell of a game. You don't need the first to enjoy the absolute quality that is ME2.

I started with ME2 and completed it then later bought the ME trilogy for PS3. I started over from ME1 and went all the way through ME3 with my current file.

I've still never played 1. (I started it once on a then-girlfriend's xbox, but I didn't like it at all. I dunno if it's because I was maleshep or what, but I was not a fan.) So several years later when the PS3 ME2 let you skip it, I was quite pleased and enjoyed the hell out of it. Still haven't played 1, I should at some point, but it will probably result in a whole trilogy playthrough, so I have to wait until that's an option.

Yeah the trouble with Mass Effect is that you don't want to stop until you've sunk countless hours into all 3 games. I tend to stay away from it unless I want to get completely absorbed in the fandom sphere and just get into that headspace. I feel exactly the same way about Dragon Age. They're both such amazing franchises but fuck me do they suck hours out of your life (very enjoyable ones though).

I dunno how sucked in I'll be able to get - I'm probably only going to be able to play on wednesdays and thursdays when Freybs is at nursery. Otherwise she'll either a) tell me to stop playing and play "Lara Croft" instead b) try and play herself, which is painful to watch as her hands are too tiny for the controller.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 play very differently from the first game. I would read a run down of ME 1, and decide how to answer the questions at the start of ME 2.

I gave her a go on Tomb Raider: Legend, and I was trying to direct her but she uses both analogue sticks and the camera is going all over the place. So I was like 'move this way towards me' (meaning Lara) and then Freybs just walks towards me herself.

One day maybe games will be played like that, but it is not this day.

the worst is batman because he wants to just run around outside and climb on things and games don't just let you do things now. you have to go through what it tells you to do first but he's all 'i want to beat up the joker' despite not being able to operate the buttons

So, where I am at so far: I have it set on 'casual' difficulty because 'braindead chimp' wasn't an option. I tried to make femShep look like me as much as possible. I didn't like any of the hair options. She has bitchy resting face up the wazoo. I called her 'Gwendolyn'

Freybs doesn't like Salarians. 'Can you kill him, I don't like his head' To which I said 'That isn't very nice, what if someone didn't like your head and wanted to shoot you? Would that be ok?'

So putting aside the weird dog-eat-dog philosophy of Freybs.

I'm up to the Citadel - it's like Liverpool One, only it doesn't have a Pizza Express. Bit too clean and tidy.

I have Wrex and Garrus and Tali. I've been running about doing errands for various people, which tbh are beneath me, I thought I was a badass war hero of space, so why are you making me try and talk your sister out of working at a strip club?

Speaking of which, I had the worlds most boring and unerotic lapdance (ok technically not a lapdance) ever. Does it make a difference if I [relax] or [sit forward]? There was no [start wanking] option

And also, I do not like that Sha'ira person. I walked into her place by mistake and then when it turned out she wanted to see me I thought 'oh this might be important to the plot' and then it turns out she just wants me to go and talk to one of her many 'customers' and she was all huggy and touchy and overfamilar with me too. Ew. Who does she think she is? Obviously this blue stumpy head tentacled schtick is very popular on the Citadel, but I reckon it's a symptom of people being in space too long. Does nothing for me. Do not want.

In terms of gameplay, I've been killed twice already which probably has you guffawing up your sleeves. Also, I haven't really bought anything from a shop yet. I find the whole menu system a baffling ordeal.

Oh and like, I have a load of big shiny guns but because I'm untrained they're usless to me. How do I not be shit?

Also Garrus trapped me behind a chair in C-Sec academy and he wouldn't move even when I tried to shoot him I had to reload

Almost everything you've described is overhauled in the second game XD. This commentary made my night btw. Don't feel too pressured about doing every little thing - that can get very boring in ME1. MOAR
