So the first review for Dissidia is in from Famitsu....

"Gold" as in "people are going to buy this regardless" was my initial reaction, but I'm really happy that it got such good scores.

36 is higher then they gave Crisis Core [35], and is on par with most of the major FF titles in history.

:D Just means we might see it stateside sooner.

I have to admit that I'm sympathetic with the last reviewer... Especially since I find myself having to be bilingually versed in FF knowledge across the series to get everything...

But hey, there are going to be a ton of help files as read by cameo characters. I've heard on the Japanese web that the Ultimania confirmed Matoya, Guy, Red XIII, and Rikku with tons more just waiting to be seen.

I'd rather wait for a more diverse review crowd, I dunno whether Famitsu's biased or not - after all, they've spent many a page reporting news on the subject.

I highly doubt Famitsu is biased given the rather crappy score they gave to Dirge of Cerberus when it first came out :monster:

When they don't like a S-E game, they'll say it. And they were covering DoC almost every other week.

I'll wait for another review myself. I know Famitsu's harsh, but I tend to disagree with how the Japanese review and their philosophy on the quality and fun of a game. I'll wait for an American perspective review.

It’s difficult to completely master the characters, especially as enemies become more formidable as your level goes higher.

Like most I'll wait to see what various other reviews say, but this in particular makes me hopeful.

Famitsu has given shit games good scores so I can't take them seriously on this matter.

Famitsu can be hit or miss for reviews. It just really depends. But they are absolutely wonderful for gaming news.

Now here's a review I can trust, it comes from another forum I frequent. Hearing this convinces me to give the game a shot.

dissidia came out in juppan a few days ago. you owe it to yourself to (likely) download this game and try it out. or import it if youre a spoiled middle-class child. or import it if you have a job (,asshole).

in case you dont give two shits about square enix (aka youre a normal person), and you haven't heard, its basically a 3d fighting game with a load of final fantasy characters and levels and a bunch of music you've already heard in those games. theres 2 characters from each ff (1-10) in the game; the most likely hero+villain pair, and i think some dude from ff12 or something.

i know, youre thinking 'why should i care about this shit its gay'; and you're probably right. but heres the wacky part, its actually good. the mechanics are almost all totally new concepts, and they work really well (once you can figure them out. theyre kinda weird tbh). its kinda like kingdom hearts, except you dont scroll through menus in your fights, and its not riddled with as much lame (i mean, cloud and sephiroth are still there, but you can just ignore those fags).. and that its actually not like kingdom hearts cause i hate that shit and i like this <3

if you can manage to look past the cash-cow qualities, its fun as shit (a really fun shit, like the one after thanksgiving or mexican food). beating the ever-loving hell out of tidus just one time with that stupid clown from ff6 is reason enough to at least give this game a whirl.

then once you get past the battle system, theres a big expansive equipment, skill, and summon system lurking around the corner. i have little idea what any of this shit is because i dont know japanese. it's fucking huge tho. theres tons of equipment, and accessories. there are summons from each ff game (you know, they redesign them each time lol), and then theres your attacks which you can choose and passive skills and whatnot. i'm guessing the game may actually be better (perhaps worse, who knows) if you understand the skills and abilities.

theres a story line somewhere. apparently people (fags) actually care about that. i skip all that shit so i have no idea if the the cutscenes are any good (theres a ton of them). btw option to skip cutscenes = GG

so anyway, if youre a psp owner (lol), you owe it to yourself to play one of the best things to come out of square since ff9 (which was the only good thing until now).

play + discuss please :}

It does say something if the game was able to get someone who apparently doesn't like Square-Enix that much at all, and have them enjoy it. To be able to sell it to someone on that far opposite of the side of the spectrum in terms of liking Final Fantasy, is pretty damn good.

What spikes my interest more is that, based on both that review and what I've seen from it so far, the gameplay seems to be quite different from existing games, basically merging the RPG, action and fighting game genres into one single game.

Other fighting games are mainly 2D in a lot of cases, for example the most recent one, MK vs DC, whereas this one's fully 3D and puts all three dimensions to good use.

Now I see where you get it MOG :monster:

But yeah, sounds promising, I guess. (Why this is milking and no one complains about Super Smash Bros. I don't quite understand, but whatever.) He sounds like someone who'd be hard to please and he likes it, so that's a good sign.

While I have no problem with Dissidia...

(Why this is milking and no one complains about Super Smash Bros. I don't quite understand, but whatever.)

Super Smash Bros got away with it because it's fun as hell, it's a international hit, and it's one of the single most successful video game ventures of all time. Trust me, if it wasn't fun, it would have gotten the same flak. Hell, in some circles, it still does.

Of course, there is a such thing as cashing the cow, even though yes, everyone wants to make money. As a writer, it's understood in the creative and literary world that there's a certain beauty in 'putting the pen down', and in some cases, leaving a story at just one entry, as some argue Square should have done with FF7 (I myself have no real beef with the Compilation, just offering a viewpoint).

Well it seems like it's selling half decent too. I guess Im going to have to get a 4 gig memory stick when it comes out so I can do the full install and still keep all my music and stuff on.

But for now, Star Ocean the first departure time.
