So I've been playing this for a couple of weeks and I'm just about ready to trade it in. Or rather, sell it on eBay, since the local Gamestation wanted to screw me over and take it for £20. Shysters.
I've recently found out that Namco were preparing to can the series until they made a sudden U-turn and announced a fifth title. That certainly goes some way to explaining why the game feels flat and rushed. In fairness, seeing as Namco gave Project Soul only a year to produce the game, you can't fault the developers themselves. No, the blame lies squarely with Namco for failing to give this title the care and attention it deserved.
What really lets SCV down is the terribly unbalanced learning curve. Seriously, when I got to Nightmare in story mode, I would as good as capitulate the fight the moment he knocked me down, cause by the time you get back up he'd have shaved off half your health. If you thought he was a cheap-ass fighter in previous SC games, you ain't seen nothing. Some Quick Battles are just IMPOSSIBLE - unless you use a certain character and learn to spam one move. Gee... Awesome.
And as some of you have already touched upon, there is serious lack of depth to the offline play. Story mode revolves around one character, albeit interspersed with a couple of other playable characters but that's about it. The original Soul Blade had more to it than SCV's story mode, and how long ago did that game come out? Again, this almost certainly would have been improved if the developers had more time.
The new characters are uninspired and leave A LOT to be desired. Patroklos is a bit of a dick. Pyrrha is just....Ugh. The breathless, 'plz don't make me hurt chu!' bimbo. I know Sophitia would apologize when kneeing you in the crotch but this girl's something else. We also have Xiba, the monkey-boy Kilik clone, who's main thing is food. That's it. He just cares about stuffing meat buns. Sheeeeit, even when he loses he cries 'FOOOOOOOOOD!' I mean... Really? We've had a lot of dark, complex characters in the series but now we're resorting to lame lol animu stereotypes? And then there's carbon copies of Xianghua & Taki who bring nothing new to the table.
Any positives?
Character creation is a slight improvement on the previous game but still falls short in certain aspects. While you can now freely equip your characters without fearing for stat penalties, there isn't a great selection of equipment available (they didn't carry over the gear from SCIV for starts), and no amount of pretty patterns (which I guarantee you'll barely even use) can make up for it.
Voice-acting is fairly solid. Probably the first SC in awhile that I've left on the English audio track. Managed to recognize a few established voice-actors, as well. Patroklos = Yuri Lowenthal, Xiba = Johnny Yong Bosch, Pyrrha = Serah's VA.
Ezio from Assassin's Creed is a welcome addition to the character rosta. Especially after fucking Yoda & Darth Vader in the last game, who have NO business being in Soul Calibur.
I don't know if this is it for Soul Calibur. The series is in dire need of a shake-up. The story has become stale and Namco need to invest time and money into any future project if they really want to keep the franchise alive.
