Spoiler threads

I have a question.

Can we ease off on the spoilers of stuff in threads, please? I can't speak for other people, but I don't always get to do things as quickly as everyone else (lol I'm fighting to have a place to live right now), and it's kind of a downer for there to be unmarked spoilers all over the place in threads - as an example, Prometheus. The movie came out LESS THAN A WEEK AGO, and it's already an unmarked spoiler thread?

Or in the Arkham City thread, where someone spoiled
the fact that Harley is pregnant with Joker's kid
, which, while the person in question said that it wasn't and was an easter egg and you had to go looking for it, doesn't change that A) this is the kind of game where discovering things for yourself is half the magic, B) I sure as hell didn't know this!, and C) other members (or maybe just Dacon, I really don't remember) agree that it was a pretty big spoiler.

I remember when Bex spoiled part of Deathly Hallows two years after it came out and got instantly banned for it. I'm not asking for anything nearly that harsh - just that people use the spoiler tag instead of just marking the thread as being chock full of spoilers, since then other people who haven't had the chance can't discuss it sans spoilers.

Another example of me being a little late - Lords of Shadow. I literally JUST GOT STARTED with this game, and the thread changes to 'well we're not gonna tag stuff from the first game anymore because barebones info for the second game is being released'. Maybe I'm just being sensitive about it, I dunno.

Just something to think about, please.

I agree. In the future, please report unmarked spoilers, or unmarked spoilers in a thread not marked as a spoiler thread; we can't undo people from being spoiled, but we can edit the posts and mark spoilers as appropriate. But besides that: everyone, please remember to mark spoilers. If it concerns a particular episode or volume, it would be appreciated if you explain exactly what episode / volume the spoiler concerns, using the
Darth is Luke's dad!
-tag.

I agree with this completely, mostly because I thought it was already something agreed upon long ago after what happened with Bex. But then it's something everyone just seemed to shrug off, but it always bugged me.

Prometheus is the first thing is a while that I got to see when it was released, I don't know how film threads usually go because once they're released I stop looking at them since I probably won't be seeing them for a while. Everything else I'm usually behind with. But there's not really a thread here I can talk about say, Game of Thrones, which I'm reading but at the slow pace I read everything. Because each thread seems to be either spoilers, and I don't know if people will be marking spoilers for the first book anymore. Same thing for older FF games like FFIV or VI. I know this is a forum based around a Final Fantasy game, but it's only based on one of those. But then spoilers for other games get thrown around in threads unrelated to those games.

tl;dr: yeah this

The Prometheus thread has been marked as spoilers unmarked (that was a clumsy sentence) because I think we'd figured that the people who were interested in it were the ones posting there prior to its release, we didn't really get any new people and then it felt kind of stupid spoiler tagging everything when we'd all seen it. But if people want it changed back then thats cool.

yeah this is a good idea. Also I would say to label spoilers instead of just saying "spoiler". Because in the Game of Thrones thread for example, I've seen the show, but currently reading the books. And a lot of times both are discussed in there. So sometimes I'm not sure whether or not to click on a spoiler because I don't know if it's about something I've already seen or something that I haven't read yet.

I have no problem with this idea. In fact I'd have brought it up myself if I'd suspected anyone else cared.

I understand your pain, but at the same time, I don't. If there is something I don't want spoiled for me, and there are discussion things about it on the internet... I AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE. Has never failed me.

I do this myself, but at the same time, I shouldn't have to. We may have serious problems communicating with each other as a staff, but I think enforcing a rule set like this is something we should be able to handle.

I do avoid threads about stuff I am interested in seeing or reading or playing myself. The problem is when people do that outside of designated threads. I avoid Game of Thrones threads, but then Ava spoiled something in an unrelated thread. And I think her reply to someone pointing it out was essentially 'I figured everyone had already knew'.

(Sorry to single out Ava for this, this is just the first example I thought of.)

I think in the case of Prometheus we should probably re-spoiler everything until say, October? Then hopefully everyone will have had a chance to see it.

The problem we have is that Fox are bastards and have staggered the release dates massively. So those of us who have seen it want to discuss what we saw and those who haven't want to speculate, I dunno how many people are in that latter group here Omega, Tetsujin and Alex Strife still haven't seen it afaik.

Do you think a separate speculation thread is in order?

Yeah, go for it. I always wondered why when new media came out, people didn't just make new spoiler threads for them. They did that with FFXIII and FFXIII-2 almost immediately, as I recall. I can't see why not with other properties. Even if we're not based on those properties, we still have enough fans for many of them to justify two separate threads.

Well, I've marked all my spoilerific posts in Prometheus as such, because I'm nice. I stand by my previous post in this thread though :awesome:.

I'll go back and spoiler all my posts then. I'll leave it to those who haven't seen it to make their own thread if they want it :)

There should be a three-month rule or something. Enact this idea immediately, please.

@ Omega: still quite sorry about Batman, as it was offhandedly mentioned, and I still stand by the fact that it's still a completely negligible Easter egg.

C:LoS was because the C:LoS2's trailer was a spoiler.

Prometheus was because the conversations started to get WAY crazy to keep track of, and no one else seemed to be checking the thread still. I won't be able to tag anything until I'm home and not posting from my phone.

@Adri: A rule seems partially viable, but how do you deal with films & games vs. series?

Films and Games: 3 month window

Television Series: Spoiler tags always until the series has finished (3 months after that).
