Square Enix files a trademark for the name "Square"; speculation arises

A new trademark filed by Square Enix was for the name "Square." Are they going back to square one?

It seems that Square Enix may be rebranding, going back to the name they used back in the old days. We have a copy of the trademark document, and it looks like the trademarking you'd see for a company name. As you can see in our gallery, it lists everything they make.

Square Enix has said nothing on this so far. Maybe they'll confirm it with a press release soon.

First there was Square and/or SquareSoft, and when they acquired Enix it became Square Enix. But I like Square by itself. It works because they have since acquired more companies. Square might be the new name that they all fall under.

Without profound changes in their structure and strategies a simple change of name means nothing.

In any case, let's see.

Yeah, I don't think it's a sign of actual change. It just sounds like some bureaucratic shuffling's been going on.

Here's where I would say: "What's in a name?" but the innocent and romantic in me thinks this might just be good.

Probably just - THEY LIKED US WHEN OUR NAME WAS SQUARE. LET'S CHANGE IT BACK AND THEY WILL LOVE US AND GIVE US THEIR MONEYS.

Although in all honesty, I doubt they're changing they're name, but this sounds like their way of thinking.

They COULD also be making a game called Square. :monster:

Or they just don't want anyone else to take the name as to avoid confusion.

It's almost certainly just to prevent any company from taking the name Square. I'm surprised they never trademarked it before.

I doubt Enix would be happy with the idea, a company that's been around since 87ish, made famous for the Dragon Quest series, only to have their identity swallowed. xD

The only thing I like about company mergers is how their respective names merge and the appearance of new trademarks (their design etc). Its like watching a bunch of transformers connect together. So in that respect, I think going back to Square would be boring.

I'm sure they have, some of their subsidiaries were simply called "Square" after all (i.e. Square USA).

Keep in mind that a trademark isn't like copyright. A trademark has to be actively used in order for the rights to it to be maintained.
