Stupid obsessive-compulsive shit you do in games

I always have to pick up all the stray rupees and heart pieces lying around in Zelda games, even if I'm already at the maximum level of rupees/life energy. Similarly, I make all my eggs red every time I get a level floor and ceiling spaced far enough apart to do so reliably in Yoshi's Island, regardless of how many stars I have and how unlikely it is I'll get knocked off. I'm sure there are tons of other behaviours like this I've picked up over the years, but I'm currently unaware of them. What stuff like this do you do?

Zelda is indeed a very good example. I feel my (Ocarina of Time) file is incomplete unless I visit every part of the map in the "Under the well" stage or whatever it was called. Despite nothing keeps you from being there once you've taken the Lens of Truth! But the map needs to be blue all over to witness that I've been there!
And collecting hearts and rupees even when you don't need anymore; I can so relate.

Oh yeah, in games that have an automap I have to fill out everything in the automap as thoroughly as possible regardless of how unnecessary doing so is. Hell in some cases it just gets erased when you go to the next level, but that doesn't stop me.

I remember I often tried to do that in Super Metroid; didn't matter how much time I lost that way. I would feel dirty if I finished the game without having filled all the map spaces. :(

I don’t know if this counts but when I play RPGs, I stack up on Potions and every other recovery item, and simply buy everything in shops with what money I have. Then I go and gain the same amount of money spent afterwards.

I also talk to everyone anywhere :awesome:

I also always go back and score as much as I can in Mario DS to stack up on lives. I always get stuck in the first level like this. :monster:

I think these are more like hoarding. :awesomonster:

I keep my PKMNz organized in my PC boxes. Water PKMNz go to this box, Legendary to this box, Favorite to this...

I keep them on the same level, but my starter has to be 2 levels above them all.

Oh yeah, I never use items in RPGs unless I can absolutely help it and am absolutely infuriated if I don't get the chance to talk to every townsperson, look in every treasure chest, etc. Even if I have like 99 X-Potions at the end of the game, I'll wince if I'm ever forced to use one.

Hah, I do that too. I categorize my Pokeymans according to type.

With typical FF's/RPG's, I like to sell weapons I know I won't use, and when I buy items, I always always ALWAYS have to round it up to the next 10. Typically, I will also sell items and round it to the next 10. But usually, I do it to either the nearest 25. :awesome:

In Mario games, I always have to collect every coin and hit every block. I feel failure if I don't. =/

I don't care about collecting every coin in Mario games, because that would cause me to lose my mind. I do care about getting all the Dragon Coins in Mario World though, and 100% on every level in Yoshi's Island (though at least there's a tangible benefit to doing that for all except the bonus stages). In hacks when I can't find every secret exit/dragon coin it generally makes me feel like a failure as well >_>

I remember! I try to keep one of each item I find in my inventory. :monster: Even if that weapon is from level 1, I'll keep it in my inventory anyway. :awesome: I don't know why. I feel awful if I discard/sell it.

It's like a collection of some sort. I'll never use or sell anything if there's only one of it, unless it's a weapon or armor.

Most Mario games I knew where shit is by memory, so I just feel shit if I go passed it and remember "Oyah, that was there.." or "There was a free man in that tube.."

I'm quite fond of collecting coins in Super Mario 64; once I actually collected 999 coins in the first Bowser stage. I had heard a rumour that you would get a big price if you continuously picked up the coins that Bower's fire breath drops (without this I think the maximum number of coins on that stage is 80, and I recall that each breath usually don't leave more than 3-5 coins).

It was...interesting. :monster: If I recall correctly, after a certain point you stopped receiving extra lives despite the large number of coins.

In RPGs when you choose what a character will say, I feel so inclined to choose the most positive response. The idea of choosing an unmotivational line, or hurting another character in the game, is usually not to my liking.
Unfortunately this made me go through FFVII numerous times and making Cloud say the same things each time :monster:
The same for Chrono Trigger when I play it.

Generally, I'd say I am obsessive about completion. Especially in RPGs. I don't care how long a game takes me--I will NOT move on from an area until I have done absolutely everything I possibly can, from examining every nook and cranny for all possible treasures, talking to every NPC, and/or completing whatever mini-games there are. I guess on a first playthrough it's not that strange, but I do it even if I've already played the game the same way once before. :loopy:

Also, in playing stuff like Dynasty Warriors, I tended to get pretty obsessive about killing every enemy unit and general on the map before defeating the commander. And getting Grand Masters in Tenchu, unspotted while still killing every guard. Or finding every last damn piece of armor/upgrade in Mega Man X games. Again, it probably has to do with the urge for completion.

I also tend to do things like pick up health/money/ammo when I really don't need it. Can't really think of good examples of that atm, except maybe in stuff like Zelda as you mentioned.

Oh, and AGREED on using items ever.

I must have 99... OF EVERYTHING. Anything that you are able to get 99 of, anyway. I also must have every treasure chest I can see/know of. I'm a gil whore in FF, and I have no idea why... And since I must have every single item, you can bet I stayed at that FFIX auction until I had everything. I even went back to outbid people later without needing the items... just because it made me feel good about myself. :awesome:

I did that with Drakengard. I had to kill EVERY enemy before moving on. And that game has too many damn enemies. XD

:awesome: Maybe it has to do with getting your money's worth out of a game, but there is no real rational reason for it, is there?

 That obsession is what actually what drove me nuts about Samurai Warriors, even though I enjoy it just as well. There would be some stages with objectives that prevented me from going around and clearing the map, especially on hard. :rage: I nonetheless put in great efforts to obtain every item and final weapon for each character. :monster:

Eff yes. I couldn't let any of them get away. I remember hopin' on and off my dragon, depending on whether or not they were resistant to magic and stuff.

Reminds me I should start up Drakengard 2 soon.

I cannot stand having any number of items that don't end in either 0 or 5. It feels like someone is stabbing me in the brain with a sharp object looking at 2s, 3s, etc... on the end. Bleh. I'll throw away items if I have to.

I always feel compelled to constantly rotate the camera while running around, but only in the Wild Arms series for whatever reason. I don't know why, I just can't stop myself. I'm always holding the shoulder button.

Lmao, even if they were the type of enemy that flung magic back at you, I still used the dragon to toast their asses. And then when I got knocked off, I'd be all "BITCH I KEEL YOU" and just start blasting them with magic/cutcutcut. That game is like the ultimate stress reliever. I would be so lost without it. <3

Huh, now you reminded me that I have to get the second one too. That also reminds me of an OCD thing... Drakengard had a lot of alternate endings. If I know a game has alternate endings, I will keep playing until I get all of them. :monster:

Silent Hill is a popular one for me. Each one of those games has like 4 different endings.

Hawkeye.

Hero of the Ages says Shabz.
During racing on Halo, if someone shoots at me but breaks off to continue to their navigation point. Instead of doing the same, I totally track them down all across the map like a freakin' bounty hunter if I have to just to kill them. I also take out pretty much anyone that gets in my way of doing so. This sometimes causes me to give up easily coming in 1st to finishing in like... 7th.:monster:

Some of mine have already been covered. But since I mostly play RPGs, it's easy...

I absolutely HAVE to get 99 of everything that I can. In FFVIII, this includes magic. EVERY spell.

As a corollary, I only use items when I have to (also magic, in FFVIII).

I absolutely HAVE to max out my characters' stats before final boss tiem. ALWAYS. Even in FFVII, where Sources are a pain in the ass.

I absolutely HAVE to talk to EVERYONE.

In every game I play, I HAVE to get every item from every chest.

I have to complete EVERY sidequest.

I always pick the nicest/best replies when a choice is given the first play through. Later, I might replay and be an ass.

I never rename characters.

All my Pokemon get organized based on type. Later on, I set aside separate boxes for eggs/legendaries.

I have to fill out all automaps.

In DMC/etc games, I always have to max out new weapons/armor/whatever as soon as I get them, and will farm orbs/exp/whatever to do so. The exception is DMC3's Styles, which are harder to level...which is why I always use ONE until it maxes out :awesome:

In DMC/etc, I'm obsessive about not using healing items EVER.

In Samurai Warriors/etc, I cannot let any enemy units live. Ever.

In Tenchu, I stealth kill everyone, even if I have to run away to get their alarm status back to normal.

In MGS, I kill guards AFTER I tranq them. Ain't lettin' them shits wake up. In Snake Eater, I ruthlessly kill dogs and any animal that crosses my path.

I'm a sniper rifle whore.

I always sort items based on type, then alphabatize them by type.

That's all I can think of for now.

EDIT: This kinda falls under sidequests, but deserves its own - I have to beat every hidden uberboss. Always. I bought the International version of FFX JUST to fight the Dark Aeons :monster:

EDIT2: I also never use Limit Breaks/whatever until I fight some uberboss or am about to die; in FFVII, I'll use them just to get the Attack command back :awesome:

EDIT3: And I always stick to the same general parties - Cloud/Tifa/Cid, Cloud/Tifa/Barret, Squall/Rinoa/Zell, Squall/Rinoa/Irvine, Kimahri/Rikku/Auron, Kimahri/Yuna/Auron, Balthier/Fran/Ashe, things like that; basically, the characters I like the best :P

I'm also pretty damned obsessive about saving. With save states I'm even worse. I'll abuse save-states on emulator just for the purpose of redoing a section more satisfactorily to myself, even if there was nothing wrong with the first attempt other than how it looked to me. This would make sense if I were recording tool-assisted speedruns, but of course I'm far too lazy for that. It doesn't stop me from redoing sections until I feel I've got them done adequately though. I probably end up wasting more time with save states than I save in a lot of games :monster:

I do the same thing; I'll replay missions in DMC/Ninja Gaiden just to get them done faster or better, and I'll replay boss fights in RPGs to do them better, too.

Never satisfied with my own performance =/

So I always create a new save file at every save point :awesome:

I don't care if I could use Hi-potions or X-potions or whatever, I'll always heal my characters with regular potions. And then I'll use about 20 of them healing someone and buy them again as soon as I can. I must always have 99 potions.

Also, in FFVIII I must have 100 sleeps junctioned to everyone's elemental attack at all times. The damn T-Rexaur traumatized me. :wacky:

In Pokemon I always rename my character and my pokemons so that their name doesn't show up LIKE THIS. That way it doesn't feel like everyone's screaming at me and my little buddies. :wackymonster:
