Symbolism in FFVII

Ah yes, you see, this is what I love. This is what I love to discuss and explore!

One thing they failed to discuss is the allusions to the book of Exodus in the Bible. The whole concept of the Promised Land is practically lifted straight from there. It's just that except being abundant in milk and honey the Promised Land of FFVII is abundant in mako energy.

I'm confused about one thing, though. When it talks about the president watching the plate fall from his ivory tower with Joseph Haydn music playing, what do that mean? And I mean the Joseph Haydn part. Do they just mean music that sounds like his style or did Uematsu actually use part of one of his songs for that scene?

Or is there a metaphor that I'm not catching?

Aerith's death was meant to represent death of a virgin.

Owait, Zack tapped the shit out of that. never mind.

lol wut?

Where did you get the virgin part from? Or are you making stuff up again. :monster:

That being said I don't agree with Aerith's name coming from Eris. I mean first of all we all know now that Aeris was never correct in the first place. Also, why would Aerith be associated with the goddess of discord and chaos, of all things? Even throwing in the word, "Strife," because ZOMG ITS CLOUD'S NAME doesn't seem to make it fit. It's just not her. Simply being an anagram of Earth with an "I" thrown in makes much more sense.

I got something different for Bugenhagen - the name of the professor in "The Omen".

Cool article overall. Symbolism in FF fascinates me. Kefka's little "divine comedy" is a perfect example of FF taking epic culture and mixing it with epic gameplay. :)

Oh, well then that makes sense.

You should have said THE Virgin, not A virgin. Might have made more sense off the get go. :monster:

Yeah no.

You're just an uncultured philistine.

Ziggurat Project? What's that? Link please?

No, your inability to notice my reference to a famous painting is not excused.

It is when you don't get the name of the painting right and spell it in all lowercase so we don't even know it's a name. :monster:

Oh yeah, never mind. I did read about that when I read it. For some reason my mind was thinking of another blog/essay.

But yes, that does look kind of interesting. I had never heard of it before now.

Did they get it or did they think you meant an actual virgin and are thanking you for saying that Zack tapped that? :monster:

That being said, symbolism in FFVII. Awesome.

Stepping outside the realm of religion and mythology, who here thinks that the whole deal with mako energy is synonymous with global warming? Were people even really worried about this on a mainstream level back in the 90's?

Global warming has been a big issue for decades now, but FF7 wasn't touching on just that, it was about all around destruction of the environment for the sake of industry.

People weren't as concerned about the environment in the 90s as they are at present. FF7's message to respect the planet is very applicable to what's going on right now globally IRL.

Actually there was quite a movement back in the 90s too. It just wasn't as big as it is now.
