Symbolism in FFVII

People weren't as concerned about the environment in the 90s as they are at present. FF7's message to respect the planet is very applicable to what's going on right now globally IRL.

Yes they were, :monster:. They were just less militaristic, or it was less emphasized in the media. 'Awareness' in that area did become a fad in the 00's though, I'll give you that. At least over here it did, with 'biological' food and stuff. Which, imho, is just the same old, only more expensive.

Oh damn how am I supposed to come back after something like Captain Planet? Well I've been pwned. :monster:

So, idea. Cloud's bike is Fenrir, in Norse mythology Fenrir was a wolf that swallowed the sun and brought about the death of the gods (at least how I understand it). Now, Sephiroth wanted to become a god, and Cloud killed him. Done on purpose? Conicidence? The staff just thought that Fenrir sounded cool because Cloud had he whole "lone wolf" thing going on in AC?

Would the creators of really gone that much into it? I'm sure there were certain aspects of the game that may of been influenced in part by what's suggested but not necessarily deliberately intended to be symbolism to such an extent. They were just trying to make a great game that would sell.

FFVII isn't like Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Although, Nomura is apparently very much into his mythology but otherwise I think it's looking for deeper meanings than were actually intended.

*sigh of relief*

Finding 'more than what was intended' is what symbolism is all about if you ask me, its what I always hated about English class. I can do clear symbols (in FF7 realm, like everyone on in the team helping Cloud up to Bahamut), but super-specific that someone clearly just made up is...

At the risk of going a little off topic, a specific example I remember is doing The Great Gatsby in sophomore year of high school. The teacher was talking about the symbolism in Daisy(?) wanting to go out to the country because "it's so hot out." And how that was some symbol or double entendre referring to that the tension was heating up between the characters.
I mean, really...you really think that's what F. Scott Fitzgerald was thinking when he wrote that line? Not the fact that Manhattan is freaking hot in August? >_>

This was one thing I didn't like about my English classes as well. You'd construct an essay exploring the symbolism possibly hidden behind every single phrase, description and word but in the end the writer was probably just writing the story in their head and while yes, was being careful about the words they selected and how they wanted to reader to imagine the setting, were not painstakingly condensing hidden meanings behind every dot of ink.

Trying to write my own novel right now I feel I know a little about that. For example, I could say some of the bigger plot developments are heavily influenced by real life political developments within the past couple of centuries but I only thought about that after I'd already planned what would happen. I'm sure someone else would have a slightly different idea if they were to read it too and they wouldn't have even created the story.

Still, sometimes it's interesting to see how different people perceive the same lines or uses of words, and the slightly differing meanings they get from them.

Although FFVII would benefit greatly from more Misato panty shots. :awesome:
