I just noticed some fans have developed some sorta of sympathy for Hojo because of alternative interpretations of him.
Some of the excuses range from he couldn't get over being in Dr.Gast's shadow,not being able to tell his son who his true parentage truly is,heartbroken over his wife's lingering feelings for Vincent,hiding his feelings about Sephiroth's demise and his son's lack of respect for him,and finally helping Sephiroth destroy the world.
The game actually points to Hojo being a Jerk With A Heart Of A Jerk because he is a straight up sociopath who lacks any empathy for anyone including his own son.In fact he was actually indifferent towards his own child's demise and cared more about how he was defeated.He only cared when Sephiroth returned back alive.He is only interested in anything if it can further his scientific interest.Lets not forget he willingly didn't care about being a parent and just wanted to recreate an Ancient using a human embryo fused with Jenova's cells.The lack of respect seems to be his own fault because from what it is shown Sephiroth has justfied reasons for having complete scorn for the quack.Not to mention never allowing Sephiroth to be held by his mother and lying to him all his life about what his true origins are.
Also I think a lot of fans forget that Hojo never cared about Lucrecia and only used her in order to have a child to inject Jenova's cells into.I also think they tend to forget that he didn't care at all about Lucrecia complications in her pregnancy and the fact that Vincent justifily confronted Hojo on the fact.Then shot him for being too loud shows he will do anything in order to achieve anything for scientific research.Also people dismiss the fact that he injected Jenova's cells into Sephiroth because they excuse it as trying to make his child better.However,if one thinks harder about it he is willingly to gamble his unborn child's saftey just in the name of science.
His so called parental concern for Sephiroth is just an obsession he has rather than any love.People point to him being the president of the Silver Elite to show proof that he does love him but if one was looking further it could be just the fact that he likes to stroke his ego about his own creation.It would also be considered kinda of creepy since he created the Silver Elite when Sephiroth was five.It can also be seen as a scientist showing off his science project to others as well.
Also the excuse that Hojo hated being in Gast's shadow really shouldn't give him any sympathy at all because of the fact that its his own fault that he is an unethical creep who ruins people's lives because he feels like it.Not to mention the fact that Hojo killed Gast then took Aerith and Ifalna to be experimented on at Shinra for seven years.
Final conclusion,this guy is probably one of the most unsympathetic characters in the Final Fantasy franchise.
