That trigger warning tag

We discussed this in the other thread before it went to shit, and a lot of people seemed to think it was a good idea, but we never really established criteria for how it should be used, what it should be used for, or when it should be used.

So let's do that. I'm going to go ahead and make a tw tag, and then we'll discuss what to use it for.

THANK

i prefer this to using the spoiler tag cause it will actually encourage people to tag for triggers (i don't think it really occurred to most people to use it for that purpose before this) but yeah this is really good

If you're posting something that may not necessarily agree with everyone, you use the tags.

If we start having to use tags when discussing politics and religion, and the like, I will quit this forum :P.

Maybe we could have a trigger thread where we could post things we don't necessarily want to see?

I don't think this trigger warning tag is something that needs to be strictly enforced or whatever, just another courtesy someone could use.

Nobody has yet said what topics need to be covered with the warnings. The page that Isaac Dian links to says:

Content which is widely agreed by feminist blogs and fandom writers to be warned for:

  • graphic descriptions of or extensive discussion of abuse, especially sexual abuse or torture
  • graphic descriptions of or extensive discussion of self-harming behaviour such as suicide, self-inflicted injuries or disordered eating
  • depictions, especially lengthy or psychologically realistic ones, of the mental state of someone suffering abuse or engaging in self-harming behaviour
That could be a good place to start, and it would save us a protracted and potentially difficult conversation about what does and doesn't qualify.

Don't get me wrong, I disagree with the implementation of this tag, but I guess it's not too much hassle to use it if some members would appreciate it, so long as it's straightforward.

I disagree with the implementation of this tag thing as well, I've wanted to comment ever since I signed on hours ago to see it already beginning to go into effect. I haven't, because despite hours of thought I can't really figure out what I dislike so much about the idea. It bothers me, not knowing why.

Lets not over think it. If you think your saying or posting something that doesnt fall into NSFW or spoiler tags but should still be hidden behind a tag use TW.

Over thinking things often doesnt end well. Lets just go with the flow here.

I think it's an good idea since we're a community that is quite liberal in its use of reaction gifs.

I mean I remember one time someone posted a spider macro or something similar and I was like FUCK I NEED TO SCROLL REALLY FAST PAST THIS POST.

Spiders are scary man ;_;

(TRIGGER WARNING) i wonder how well this works

i think it could be pretty useful for people with epilepsy or people with migraines brought on by flashing gifs or w/e.

@GLD: My issue is simply the possible slippery slope (potential fallacy, I know) where we must treat everything with kid gloves, for fear of offending someone, and worse, getting in trouble for it, hence my previous post here :P.

That's definitely part of it. But the whole of my issue with this idea still eludes me.

Just so you're all clear, these trigger warnings aren't (shouldn't) be in the really serious threads (debate section) for the sake of utlising "kid gloves". From my understanding and recollection, these tags will be used more for jokes that may be in bad taste to some folks and large gif images that people are tempted to post in regular day-to-day threads.

i would think these tags would just require the use of common sense

for example if you linked a news article dealing with abuse that was particularly intense/heavy you could put it under a tag

if you are linking a video with some gory content (remember when masa linked some vid in the general discussion thread and everyone got freaked out because they weren't aware how bad it was??)

bright flashing gifs put under a tw tag for any members with epilepsy

look we don't have to be at tumblr level sensitivity here it's just common courtesy
