It's the backwards compatibility I think that fucked itself over. PS3 had it for a while, and then lost it when upgraded. But 360 uses the same disks (no?) so it seemed weird to not have backwards comp.

The PS3 is going to continue to gain ground though, now that the format war is over. Not only is the PS3 affordable now, but the sheer amount of media potential and shit will make it more appealing once people start finally transitioning over to HD and utilize all of its potential. The free online play is also really cool. I'm loving the shit out of mine.

I've heard to counter the free online play of the PS3 that xbox live is going free aswell. However the xbox live store prices are going up.

Eh, we'll see. If X-Box Live DOES go free then...PS3 might be in for some competition :monster:

But I think PS3 already has a solid base of gamers who use it already and since it was doin' it first, it may have an advantage.

And the fact Blu-Ray has one out has significant potential. Blu-Ray will eventually become the standard once DVD finally discontinues. And that's going to seriously make the PS3 viable as not just a gaming console but a general household media center. People who want to upgrade to Blu-Ray and get an affordable Blu-Ray player will look to the PS3 and utilize it for a lot of other shit.

There's just a lot of potential in the PS3 that's going to get tapped in the future if Sony doesn't do anything stupid. :monster:

It's true...xbox 360 has bumped the Wii's avatar idea, the ps3's ability to burn discs to make loading time go faster...what will they steal next? O.o

...They were actually thinking of giving the new xbox console a blue-ray player but then microsoft decided they wanted nothing to do with the ps3.....

Its not about having to do with the PS3, microsoft is a firm believer that digital downloads should be the next step in the format evolution.
Which imo is a stupid idea , not everyone has fast ass internet to rent a movie , at my old place it would take an hour to download 100mb files >.<

Digital games work IN THEORY but because there's a technological gap between certain consumers, the climate isn't right. Not every game player is an upper-middle class suburbanite with 24/7 wi-fi highspeed internet that has enough disposable income to buy online shit and utilize the cutting edge technology available. People in rural communities, urban cities that have not fully utilized available technology, and many other consumer demographics just aren't able to fully take advantage of pure digital download media.

It really has its advantages but not everyone can utilize them. Furthermore not everyone wants to shell out the money for a computer, or external hard drive with a tetrabyte of space to store all of their movies and shit for easy viewing.

I mean hell, in theory it would be awesome having an entire library of movies stored in a space the size of a wallet, and be able to rent movies from home through downloading and shit but...it ain't feasible yet for everyone. And there is something more satisfying in tactile ownership that just isn't always replaceable with digital ownership.

I'm getting a tetrabyte external hard drive because my PS3's 80 gig hard drive only has 20 gigs left and I'm feeling paranoid :monster:

I was just going to replace the hdd with a 250gb laptop one but that sounds much easier. I only got a 40 gb then the 80gb one was the same price a month later. D:

Does anyone wonder why Microsoft never produced a handheld console to compete with the DS and PSP?

Not sure, but I'm guessing they've got an overpaid research team working on it - just like they have a few working on the Google killer (which won't happen), an iPod killer (Zune, which fails for not being released worldwide), and probably a handheld console, too. But I'm thinking the next thing they'll do is a phone, like a Zune phone, possibly with games. And Windows Mobile 7.
