I saw that. I got mad because people were getting mad complaining about Katniss being cast as white (when I'm pretty sure the book was clear on her being at least half white) while this bullshit was going on rip :'3

Still haven't seen this, but looking forward to it. I've read the books though, and I don't remember Katniss having a clearly described race. I'm sure "olive" is used to describe her skin tone, but to me that doesn't mean "not white" anyway. I suppose it's a moot point, but I don't understand why some fans are being complete dicks about it anyway.
Can't comment on Rue because I haven't actually seen it, but from the promo pictures and trailers she looks perfect IMO.
Wife and I saw it today. She's read the books, but I haven't. We both loved it to death. One of the best movies I've seen this year.
I'm just thoroughly impressed with it, from beginning to end. Jennifer Lawrence was, of course, fucking amazing, but so was everyone, no matter how big or small their role. Literally everyone made me genuinely believe in their character; even Liam Hemsworth, despite his small role. If I picked three favorites, though, they would be Lawrence as Katniss, Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, and Amandla Stenberg as Rue -- and, believe me, it was hard not to give one of those spots to Woody Harrelson.
Josh Hutcherson doesn't seem to be getting much love in this thread, but my wife and I thought he did a great job. We both also found the interaction between Katniss and Peeta convincing, though the film apparently
gives more an impression of genuine affection for him on Katniss's part at this point than the book did. But I find their relationship very sweet, so that's okay.
If I had to pick a favorite scene in the movie, it would be
Katniss honoring Rue, and the subsequent revolt in District 11. I adored how long they dragged out Katniss saying goodbye to her, how they communicated -- without verbally saying anything -- that this hit Katniss like she had failed her little sister, and how Jennifer Lawrence sold the whole thing to us so well.
I could go on forever about the things I loved about this movie, but suffice it to say that the director's own love of the source material is apparent in every scene. Their appreciation for it really shows, and I can't help but feel their passion.
I saw it last night. I thought it was great. Having read the books, I can honestly say a lot of it was exactly how I'd imagined it.
Rue's death scene was my favourite also ^^^. I was wondering whether they'd do the flower thing justice, and I can't quite believe they managed to do it so well. I teared up, I won't lie.
I also thought they pulled off the relationship between Katniss and Peeta quite well. And I thought Josh Hutcherson pulled off a great job. I'm not really understanding where these "poor acting" comments are coming from. I found him as believable as Gale to be honest.
I have to say, Jennifer Lawrence is a FANTASTIC Katniss. She pulled her off so well!
I saw the movie last night and I really, really enjoyed it.
I thought they did an excellent job transitioning it to the big screen. I didn't mind the stuff they didn't add to the movie and the stuff they did add (like the Gamemaker talking to the President) because it was so interesting.
I gave it 30% on rotten tomatoes. Half the film could've been cut without effecting the plot. They placed far too much emphasis on things on the build-up (before the tributes went into the arena). I was like "I get the idea already, move along". Then there was the shaky filming of action scenes. The more action, the more shaking! ARGH. The love story was forced too, and did not seem convincing at all.
I actually agree with all your points and mentioned them myself in my post. It just didn't deter my enjoyment for the movie
I thought they should've cut it out with shaky camera once the games actually began but that's just imo. i see what they were trying to do with the effect - it was an attempt to capture the pov of the book. worked for the first bit, but if the games section of the film had a more steady camera it would have made a better contribution to the "reality tv" aspect.
but i agree the build up was too much and the love story would've served to be more convincing. i know it is supposed to be forced on some level, but as a viewer i have little emotional investment into peeta/katniss to see it develop in the next film. it's a shame because it was really sweet in the book but it's a common complaint with the movie.
but that's okay because that means i can come in and sweep jennifer lawrence off her feet
Too much build-up? Now I didn't anticipate that as a gripe. I thought the movie was perfectly paced.
And, yeah, the romantic sub-plot being a bit forced is deliberate, because
Katniss is pretending for the sponsors and other viewers; though I'm told this is obvious in the book, while the movie may be implying more of a genuine affection on her part than was the case at this point in the novels. In any case, she doesn't know he's sincere right now (at least in the book).

i thought her affection was at least sort of faked for sponsers as well? given that hamguy was like 'remember to say how you can't live without peeta you love him so much, etc.' and how very awkward she seemed about them in front of the cameras
I think the problem people are referring to about Katniss showing too much affection in the film is there because the film isn't inside her head, which is a good thing. The fact is, in the book she DOES feel something for Peeta when she kisses him, and that moment is in the movie. But the book is a lot more "omg what are my feelings i miss Gale blah blah blah". The movie doesn't really have time to do that too well, so it appears that she's got more affection than she really does.
