This is a book about Aeirth's afterlife in the lifestream, trying to save peoples dead "souls" from becoming part of Sephiroth during FF7.

Does anyone have a link to the translations to the book?

I don't have a link, but I can tell you this story is really not that great. That's just my personal opinion (that other people share), though. lol

From a more factual point of view there are a few plot points of this story that have been retconned. First off, it's obvious in CC that Aerith and Zack's relationship was more than just "a light taste of love." Also, Hojo was dead and gave his energy up to Sephiroth for the final battle, but he was still alive (although barely) in the beginning of DoC.

I personally view "Maiden" as an "official fanfiction" for FFVII. The number of the plot holes says it all.
Beside that, this novella wasn't refered to by SE as a part of the Compilation ever since it's release.

I also view it as "official fanfiction". It wasn't written or overseen by a staff member, unlike Last Order (which can be argued is from Tseng's POV, resulting with differences in plot, and the fact that the same events happen in BC).

I do know that Clerith supporters bring it up a lot, trying to prove the pairing is canon.

Yeah, Clerith shippers do try to use Maiden to prove their pairing is canon, however Maiden isn't Clerith at all. If anything, we see Aerith realize that Cloud and Tifa belong together and she gives them her blessing, being left all alone in the Lifestream with no one to lover her. D:

eh, IAWTC. I only read it once and skimmed it a second time just to clarify some events.

Just a question, but does the similie about Cloud's mind being like an egg sound any better in Japanese than it does in English? Because that's one of the lines in particular that made me think "omg wtf is this writer on." Not like the On the Way to a Smile novellas are so great or anything, but they at least lacked the weird descriptions.

Maybe it depends on the person, like prose in other languages :monster: There's things in English people think is good that I didn't like.

I wasn't big on the 'egg' thing, but I wasn't a massive fan of Benny Matsuyama's style of writing in general (from the one thing I've read :monster: )

I didn't care for that sponge one, either :monster:

Lmao, I remember thinking something similar when I read that line too.

Maiden is an okay-ish story. I think the concept was intresting, me being an Aerith fan and all, but it was messed up pretty badly. Coupled with OOC characters and a bad writing style, it was a pretty boring read.

Yes, Zack was there, and she teases him, but according to some this was her kicking him to the curb so that she could sigh away wistfully in the Lifestream for a man whom she gave her blessing to be with another woman.

Yeah, I read Maiden and I agree, it's not really anything special. I like the concept--Aerith in the lifestream helping out those she can, and being witness to the world she left--but the execution really leaves a lot to be desired. It's just...boring, tbh. And yes, I'm an Aerith fan too. I just felt they could have done so much better with it.

I agree. I like the idea. I just think the writer is really unskilled in telling a story. Some of it's half-decent but most of it is just blah.

As an Aerith fan I just plain wish the story had never been written. I don't feel that it does her character justice by any means.

It really needs to be rewritten altogather. I hope SE will do that since they are adding more Cases to On a Way to a Smile.

I only just read this last week, and was disappointed with the Aerith and Zack interaction. Plus the writing was just poor as hell I thought. Good ideas, terrible execution.

But then it dawned on me that it was written before CC.

Oh SE, it's sometimes hard to tell what is canon and what isn't these days. Haha.

I didn't particularly like how Aerith seemed to either completely absolve all these people she hardly knew, or the ones she couldn't she was still all "whutever, President Shinra/Hojo, you ain't got nuthin' on me" and acting like some badass. She hardly seemed phased at all by anything. (At least that's the impression I have of it; it's been a while since I read it.)

I get that Aerith is supposed to be strong, but Maiden just seems to overdo it for my liking.

I thought Aerith was OOC in CC, but it was CC that made me really appreciate her character. FFVII Aerith was a bit too flirty and pushy kind of girl for my tastes.
