Aren't the slums supposed to be so polluted that even the rats get sick? In a case like that, it's pretty surprising that people are still living there... I know what Cloud and Barret said, but it still doesn't make much sense...

I think that's a bit of hyperbole. I mean, yeah, the rats probably *do* get sick, but it's not so completely inhospitable, life can't exist. It's just an extremely uncomfortable, and unhealthy life. No adequate air ventilation..no light...pollution, trash, waste, rampant crime, human trafficing/sex slavery, child gangs, etc.

I know that life can probably exist there... There are people back home who've survived similar conditions for months with the additional daily threat of being shot or blown to bits... I'm not questioning their survival capabilities, just... why? Why didn't they move to Kalm, or something?

Did you SEE how hard it is to leave Midgar? Not to mention monsters all over the countryside when you do get out.

I guess you don't remember Cloud and Barret's conversation at the beginning of the game on Disc 1.

Barret: Look…you can see the surface now. This city don't have no day or night.
If that plate weren't there…we could see the sky.

Cloud: A floating city... Pretty unsettling scenery.

Barret: Huh? Never expect ta hear that outta someone like you. …you jes' full
of surprise. The upper world…a city on a plate… It's 'cuz of that #$@*&#'
pizza', that people underneath are sufferin'! And the city below is full of
polluted air. On topa that, the Reactor keeps drainin' up all the energy.

Cloud: Then why doesn't everyone move onto the Plate?

Barret: Dunno. Probably 'cuz they ain't got no money. Or, maybe… 'Cuz they love
their land, no matter how polluted it gets.

Cloud: I know…no one lives in the slums because they want to. It's like this
train. It can't run anywhere except where its rails take it.

Actually, in one of my previous posts, I said I remembered what they were saying. :monster:

Point about the monsters noted. I remember fighting many in FFVII, it's just that I also remember a few citizens wandering around outside town, and getting set upon by monsters, and it seems like they didn't expect it. Or at least they just wanted an excuse to bitch about the Shinra.

I also said that I didn't get it. No matter how attached I was to my land, I'd take my kids the hell out of it if was so filthy it contaminated rats. Unless, of course, I was shut in by monsters. :P

About the people in the CC slums seeming happy... Could it be that some of them were just reacting to Aerith's presence? I haven't played the game in ages so I don't rightly remember exactly what they said now. I guess the creators were aiming for a happier feel with CC. It didn't sit too badly here, I figured there was enough doom and gloom in the game. :monster:
