There are a couple of TV shows that remind me of the best of Final Fantasy. The ones that do; surprise me a little bit.
One is Fringe. Which I think is one of the best sci-fi shows to come out of television. Once they introduced the idea of "The Machine" - especially - it felt a lot like Final Fantasy to me.
Another is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I can't speak for Legend of Korra because I couldn't make it to the end of the second Season. But Airbender is more reminiscent of Final Fantasy than I would have expected. Okay, sure, maybe it shouldn't be a huge surprise, given the nature of the powers. However, X-Men doesn't remind me of Final Fantasy. And why not? Perhaps because X-Men takes place on "our" Earth?
Speaking of superheroes. On the much lower end of the spectrum, I have to shout out Arrow. Can't quite put my finger on why... they're definitely on Earth.
The few things that all of these shows have in common are reams of imagination, great characters, great character development, and most of all (I think) well defined groups of extremely likeable ragtag misfits. They're fun to be around, they feel real, and we want them to succeed. That's a really impressive feat in long form storytelling.
How do you guys find Final Fantasy in the things you watch?
