As promised, today I counted up all the votes from the twelve "favourite character" polls, which have been running on TLS over the last few months.
We know have twenty characters who have automatically progressed to the finals of the character battle, based on their performance in those polls. They have also been seeded into five pots, named A to E (there will be an F as well; I'll get to that later). The characters are (drumroll please):
The winners from each game
A: Auron, Vivi, Kain, Balthier
B: Cloud, Sazh, Laguna, Faris
C: Celes, Garland, Firion, Ingus
The next eight characters who received the most votes
D: Yuna, Cecil, Tifa, Lulu
E: Zidane, Fang, Rikku, Squall
Well done, I guess, to all of them! Just in case you're not familiar how seedings work, I'll briefly explain: one character from pot A will be in a group with one character from pot B, one from C, and so on all the way down to F. That way the strongest characters are kept apart at the group stage, setting up the possibility of big showdowns in the knock-out rounds
Pot F will be made up of characters you nominate, in this thread, over the course of the next week. There are multiple reasons for having this short extra round: firstly, everyone had only one vote per game, but they may prefer half a dozen characters from game Y to any in game Z, and this gives them a chance to redress the balance; secondly, there were some characters missing from the polls, including a couple of playable characters who haven't really had a fair chance to qualify up to now.
You have until next Saturday, the 31st of March, to make up to four nominations. They each have equal weight, so you don't need to put them in order. Your nominations can be for any character from any Final Fantasy game in the main series, playable or not, so long as they have not already qualified (see above). There are no restrictions on games, so feel free to pick four characters from the same game if you really want to. Giving the reasoning behind your nominations is welcome but not mandatory. The four characters who receive the most nominations will go through.
Here are some recommendations for who you could nominate, but you are not limited to them by any means:

Aerith, Terra, Rinoa, Lightning, Ashe, Rydia, Quistis, Freya (all girls!)
Playable characters and primary antagonists who were missing from the polls
Kefka, Gabranth, Golbez, Quina, ?????, Biggs/Wedge, Banon, General Leo, Ultimecia, Seymour, Gadot, Lebreau, Galenth
Remember, you have one week to make up to four nominations. If you want to, you can use the voting information, which I have put into this spreadsheet, to help you decide.

That also means you shouldn't complain to me if you're not happy with how the groups worked out! Hopefully some of you will be able to join us to discuss it as it unfolds, but of course I'll be posting the results on the forum afterwards.
