Top 5 Albums of 2009 SO FAR

Honorable mention: The Mars Volta: Octahedron

The top three will be hard to shake, but Octahedron might grow on me and replace Riceboy Sleeps or the Ozrics.

Is it any good? I really didn't rate The Bedlam in Goliath, but I loved the two before.

I think they strayed from their original style far to much with that album...

On my first listen I liked it more than Bedlam or Amp, but I haven't listened to it enough to make a definitive decision.

New list and in no particular order:

Lily Allen - It's Not Me It's You
The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
maudlin of the Well - Part the Second
Fischerspooner - Entertainment
Versant - Album TBA 2009

For the last one I'm pre-empting the notion that it will be amazing based on the lead singer Carah Faye Charnow's awesome vocals along with what I think to be two solid songs released so far.

The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

Prodigy album, so good they came back... hopefully it will kill off pendulum argh cant stand them.

The first load of song on Lilly album are good, but it gets week later into it in my opinion.

Has anyone heard Bat for Lash's new album, im actually quite likeing it at the moment.

I had vaguely heard of The Prodigy before DLing this album hearing maybe one or two songs before this, so can't really comment on their earlier stuff. Gotta say though, Invaders Must Die is good shit. I like Pendulum, so I hope both stick around. :monster:

I pretty much like Lily Allen's whole CD. I will agree that it does kind of weaken in the last few songs.

I only have one song from Bat for Lashes and that's Pearl's Dream. Sounds a little trippy and I'm liking it.

Prodogy, I used to love them, easily one of the best performances I've seen live, the crowd was chaos, people were setting off bigg ass fires and fire works every where. It was carnage, also that was the first time I ever did garys, so I was a mess, of course I've long since out grown that, but it was definetly an experiance.

Listen to the two suns album by bat for lashes, it is very dark and trippy love it.

If you like a bit of reggae stuff you should check out "Natty's Man Like I" July, Badman and Bedroom Eyes are all pretty good tracks. That was 2008 though I think.

Cant really have a 2009 thread yet though.. the years not over and summer always brings the best music in my opinion.

Moo, Meuterei, Destroyer of Worlds

The new Finsterforst that I can't remember the name of right now, big long foreign word
Devin Townsend Project - Ki

in that order pretty much

After repeated listens, the new Isis doesn't really have much staying power with me. I listen to it for a few songs or so and then find myself really wanting to listen to something else.

After seeing them live, twice, and smoking pot with the band, Sleepy Sun move to my number one spot. Obliterating Part the Second.

idk how high this will rank once I actually listen to it but I'm pretty optimisitic that Loma Prieta - Dark Mountain will be in my Top 5 for a good while. Not convinced its going to be on any list by the end of the year though. Time will tell with that one.

Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers

Such a good album, the lyrics are left by Richey, the one who dissapeared in 1995 and is now presumed dead.

Classics:
Blut aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta Pt. II
Panopticon - Collapse
maudlin of the Well - Part the Second

Solid:
Drudkh - Microcosmos
Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Isis - Wavering Radiant
Finsterforst - ...zum Tode Hin
Panopticon & Wheels Within Wheels - Split

Good, but artist can do better:
Wolves in the Throne Room - Malevolent Grain & Black Cascade
The Mars Volta - Octahedron
Shining - Klagopsalmer
Funeral Mist - Maranatha

There's a lot of stuff I haven't digested yet either so this list will probably expand as time passes.

Sunset Rubdown are rather awesome. I still need to check out their new album.

@Aaronman, agrd that Wolves in the Throne Room could have produced much better than Black Cascade. It's good, but their first two albums show they can do much better.

Haven't listened to the latest Funeral Mist or Shining yet and I'm not likely to for awhile because I'm so not in a metal mood lately.

With FM I definitely recommend starting with Salvation. That album is immaculate. It's possible the new Shining just needs time to grow on me though; I've only listened to it once thus far, but the only song that really jumped out at me was the last one (which is seventeen minutes, and thus epic).

I've had Salvation for quite awhile now, which is what made me want to look into FM's next release since they raised the bar so very high with that album. I just need to be in the right mood to listen to it properly and like, thats not happening right now :/

I should stress that none of those albums I listed are bad albums, they're just clearly eclipsed by other items in the associated bands' discographies and thus somewhat of a disappointment. They're all still worth repeated listening if you like the associated artists.

Good, but artist can do better:
The Mars Volta - Octahedron

Agreed. This album is arguably the best they have produced since Frances the Mute (some songs even better in my opinion)...however, De-loused was godly and probably won't be matched by them again unless they take a break from pumping out albums.

As a whole I'd say that it was stronger than either of the two albums that preceded it, but there were individual moments on each of them that were much better than anything on Octahedron. The problem is that, in Amputechture's case, the material was widely divergent in quality, and in Goliath's, there's just too much of it to sit through in one sitting, since they didn't really bother diverging from their sonic assault much. I still haven't listened to the new one all that much yet though, so maybe my opinion will change once I get more in the mood for TMV again.

But yeah, I doubt they'll ever top Frances and De-Loused.

I still haven't listened to Ochtahedron and I doubt I will at any time soon I've never been a big fan of TMV and I doubt that they'll ever be able to top De-Loused for me anyway.

Imo. But it'll change anytime.
