Was Sephiroth in the wrong place?

If Sephiroth was planning to be where Meteor created a wound in the Planet into which all the lifestream would flow, wasn't the bottom of the Northern Crater the wrong place for that? Seeing as how the Meteor was on a direct collision course with Midgar?

I assume he was just biding his time and would've went there after the impact occured. As powerful as he is, he probably wanted to be out of the way when that shit went down. He was resting in the Lifestream so I think the Lifestream itself probably could've just carried him there.

That lazy sonnuvabitch.

Sephiroth was using the energy at the Northern Crater to rebuild his body I thought.

But yeah he also needs to survive impact to enact his plans so that was probably a safer spot.

Being where Midgar is when Meteor strikes wouldn't be a wise choice, he's surely get injured significantly. For some reason I always thought Sephiroth would recreate the barrier (making an even stronger barrier perhaps?), brace for Meteor's impact and take control of the energy, merging with it, and continue as planned. However, he'd probably extract the energy from a distance using his 'clones' to do the work even after impact. Just a theory.

Sephiroth was at the planet's core. Perhaps he assumed the whole planet would crack in half (I mean did you catch the SIZE of Meteor???) so no matter what happened, he'd end up in the middle of the wound. He intended to destroy the Planet and absorb its Spirit Energy, right? So that he could then travel around the universe doing the same thing to other planets? So it would make sense that she would roost in the heart of an imminently pulverized celestial body.
