What's This Summon Thing?

This has bugged me since I started FF7. What the hell are these things getting sucked into the player? They've never shown up in any other Final Fantasy, but someone designed it. Why? It's not kanji or a symbol that is important to the plot...

...is it?

I always assumed it was some character from the Ancient language.

That's a total guess, though. :monster:

Yeah I figured it was Cetra script. But it also confused me when I was a kid playing the game. It doesn't really look like any of the symbols they've used in the new summon animations from Advent Children and Crisis Core

I always thought it was the name of the summon. Each summon has a different design. Other than that, never really thought about it (yeah, I know - me who scrutinizes all else!) I would go with the Cetran language/script idea, too.

West Philadelphian?! What the...?! :awesome: I'm closer to the Mainline, so I'm clueless. :P

I never gave it a second thought. I never even noticed they were all different. Being the name for each summon seems to make sense as does the Cetra language.

I always just thought it was to make the whole sequence look cool. I mean they have to do something other than just a flash and then "BAM" summon attack.

As for them not being in any of the other games... I put that to VII's graphics and funny little things they did in that game.

Actually those similar orbs appear in most FF games. FFIV, FFV, FFVI...

Sometimes the orbs just hold flames. But they do hold weird, fantasy writing at times. I think its just for looks dude. Not everything is going to have an intricate meaning behind it.

Fair enough, but I'd rather talk about something that isn't a remake or the LTD.

Someone put time and energy into creating this magic rune. I'm just wondering who it was, why they didn't just do the same thing they did with other FFs - coloured orbs.

:gtfo:

Neither does the LTD and people discuss that into the ground, don't stifle something else to talk about, dick. :monster:

I wonder who works on coming up with runes and stuff. Like I said I don't think the symbols that appear with Kadaj or Genesis summon Bahamut but I can't find a screenshot at the moment.

Genesis' sword gets runes on it too though:

It is the translation teams poor Japanese.

Come to think of it, that orb looks similar to the pattern from the temples in X... oh well. No idea but I've also wondered..

I was watching fresh prince at the time and it seemed appropriate lol.

Did they ever address with any depth the Cetran language? Neither Aeris nor Ifalna ever made any mention of it. And the ghosts in the Temple speak in gibberish. Or did they? Aeris understood them, but I always attributed that to her being more in tune with spirits than her actually understanding what they were saying. Especially considering that their gibberish consisted primarily of Curly-ese ("nyuk nyuk").

Lucrecia in DoC speaks of reading Ancients' stuff pretty casually, but Bugenhagen says he can't read it in the Forgotten Capitol. Not that I expected SE to be consistent or anything, but what do we think is actually the case?

Hey you fuckers wanted an answer, I gave you one.

I didn't know this was a "discuss random FFVII shit as a mental fapathon" topic. If it was, I'd have posted accordingly. :monster:

I think it's the language of the planet. Don't ask why. It just is.

I can't speak for post-FF7 works, but yeah, the Cetra had their own language and writing. Pretty hard for humans to figure out, which is why it was a magic coincidence that some guy just happened to translate exactly what they needed to find Holy.

Although, with speculation that Gast was the translator, it might make sense that Lucrecia was so casual about reading Ancient language - cause Gast already deciphered it.

Yeah I figured Aeris was the only person who could talk to those lagomorphs in the TotA.

(Also, Mako, I thought it was good etiquette around here to greet sass with sass.)

Does anyone know the name of the staffer who would have designed this thing? *wank wank*

Honestly I'm not sure. But since there already was something similar in previous FF games, I'm thinking it was Nomura (who designed all the summon sequences in the game) who probably made up those symbols. If you look through the FFVII Ultimania Omega at the concept art of the summons he designed, you can see those same orbs.

...Dear God, see what you made me do? You made me crack open that goddamn book all because of this. I hope you're happy.
