"When I was in SOLDIER ..." — Cloud wasn't crazy after all

Anyone remember this conversation, available immediately after Cloud explains to the team that he was never in SOLDIER?

First off, if you're nervous a lot, you won't get sick.
But you can't always be nervous.
With this much space, your best bet is to move around while you're riding.
It also might be a good idea to stretch sometimes, too.
But in SOLDIER, we spent a lot of time in trucks.
That sucked!......
And there's one thing you mustn't do when riding.

So, yeah, it seemed like Tifa had just wasted her time helping Cloud piece himself back together since he goes right back to claiming he was in SOLDIER.

Well, after doing some hunting, I finally tracked down a video of that conversation in Japanese. Here's the two pivotal lines in that language:

「自分がソルジャ―だと思っていた時はすっかり忘れていたけどな」

「でも、兵士はトラックでの移動が多かったからな」

The first one is the one that got translated as "When I was in SOLDIER, I completely forgot about my motion sickness." The second is the one that got translated as "But in SOLDIER, we spent a lot of time in trucks."

The second one is an obvious mistake. The kanji form of "soldier" is used there (兵&#22763, so he was just referring to when he was a regular grunt, not a member of SOLDIER.

As for the first line, hito will correct me if I'm wrong, I hope, but it looks to me like he actually said, "When I was wondering if I could be a SOLDIER, I completely forgot about it."

So, if I'm correct, this apparent error in the script wasn't an error at all. It was just a translation goof.

Obviously, "to ponder" (思ってい&#12383 was in the past tense, but I read the "da" after "SOLDIER" as being an informal rendering of "desu" and the "to" right before "pondered" as meaning "if" in this line. How would it best be read, do you think?

I also thought the "If you're nervous a lot, you won't get sick" line would have gone with the idea that he was worrying about whether he could get into SOLDIER and, thus, it distracted him from his motion sickness back then.

I think we were splitting it up in different ways I took the 'to' as going with 'omotte ita', as a kind of quote marking thing. I don't know how to explain it Like you'd have 'to kangaeru' or 'to iu', it's showing what you were thinking/saying/ect. Kind of like how you might use 'that' in English? (Here, that [he] was a SOLDIER.) 'Da' is that because it's being used as a modifying part of the sentence here and it seems weird to use polite language there in cases like that, it would either be at polite at the end or maybe in really formal conversations where am I going with this.

自分がソルジャ―だ = I am a SOLDIER

と思っていた時は = When I used to think that ['I'm a SOLDIER']

すっかり忘れていたけどな = I had completely forgotten [about it], though

And now I feel like digging through stuff to find my books and give a better explanation

And, yeah, we were separating the segments of the sentence differently. I think you're probably right about the use of "to" there. I'm so used to it being used that way when performing a quote or paraphrasing, and at the time didn't even think of it as maybe being used in that same, simple "I'm explaining something" way.
