Where did Masamune come from?

Like many things concerning Sephiroth's past, there are many questions that have not been answered. One of them is where did he get Masamune. We know where the Buster Sword comes from, but not the big baddie's. Some theories say he got it from Shinra, but I say this sword was actually an heirloom of Hojo (*gasp*), due to the fact I think he was Wutain and gave his son the family sword.

Not gonna lie I always assumed it was just a shinra weapon or another generic blade. Sephiroth was always portrayed as being ridiculously powerful even without his blade so I doubt he required anything of special importance to show his dominance on the battlefield. You can also purchase a similar blade when you visit rocket town from the weapons dealer.

I don't know. Hojo never struck me as the family heirloom type. He seems like the kind of guy that, if he, personally, didn't have a practical use for it, he wouldn't give a crap about it. I don't think he'd be interested in passing such an item down to his son (particularly given that he never behaves especially fatherly toward Sephiroth to begin with... even while helping him. He's more interested in the power he possesses).

I don't think it's a generic sword, either, though. I think Shinra simply had it custom made for him in SOLDIER when it became clear how strong he was.

If there's any story at all, I imagine it's something like Sephiroth looked at the massive swords he and his fellow SOLDIERs used and at the katanas their Wutain used and upon capture of the Wutais greatest swordsmith made him commission a sword after their style that only he could use effectively.

Even if he doesn't act fatherly towards Sephiroth, I still think he would give him a sword and make it finally be of good use to him. I don't see Hojo as any sort of fighter, but I could see him opportunistic about how his son would do with a handed down sword. Also I just want to tie Hojo more to Wutai, it makes for compelling stories.
