TL;DR: Sony’s website lists all of their current and upcoming exclusives. Final Fantasy VII Remake is not listed. Square says no plans for other platforms.
Hopefully this thread is okay, but I did some digging and didn’t find a suitable thread and felt like this deserved a separate thread to itself. Mods, feel free to move it if necessary.
When the FF7 Remake was announced, Sony said “play it first on PS4”. That’s a direct quote. It led many to believe that the remake would be a timed exclusive and would eventually release on Xbox, PC, and maybe even the Switch.
Well, recently after the Xbox Germany Facebook account posted a video showing the game coming to both the PS4 and Xbox One on March 3, it send the rumor mill swirling. Square Enix later came out and squashed those rumors and stated the Final Fantasy VII Remake is a PS4 exclusive and there are no plans to release it on other platforms.
This had me frustrated because I want it available everywhere. Not just because I want my choice of where to play it, but also because I want as many people as possible to be able to get their hands on it. Well, I noticed something today that makes me think this game will not be a PS4 exclusive after all, at least not forever.
Sony’s website has a section that features all of their exclusive games, including games like The Last of Us II that hasn’t been released yet. Hideo Kojima’s Death Strandingwas on this list but was mysteriously taken off recently. This led many to believe that it will get a PC release. This also got me thinking, and I decided to check the website myself to see if the Final Fantasy VII Remake was listed. It isn’t. It could mean nothing, but I found it peculiar. My best guess is Sony paid for timed exclusivity and part of the agreement is that Square can not speak about other platforms until a certain date, but that’s pure speculation on my part.
It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds, because this will be a big decision for me when I am deciding beteeen buying the next Xbox or the next PlayStation.
