Final Fantasy III and IV have both been remade and not just ports to different systems. They were graphically rebooted with added voice actors, new translations, extended dungeons and cutscenes.
The problem is that Square-Enix is FUCKING LAZY and/or STUPID and made them for the most graphically inferior gaming system available -- with tiny-ass cartridges, no less. The hackneyed sprites and slow gameplay made FFIV's remake a pile of shit. But! If Final Fantasy IV had been re-made for the PS3, with the kind of graphics featured in FFXIII, it would have far surpassed the original (and FFXIII for that matter).
If you can imagine walking around Castle Baron with the kind of graphics/control that FFXIII (or even XII) had, it would have blown gamers' minds.
Now imagine Midgar.
I don't think a lot of people understand the appeal of a remake. It is not to experience something new. It's to experience something familiar in a new way. For me, it isn't even about playing the goddamn game. I just want to stand in the lobby of the Shinra Headquarters without a bird's eye view. I want to stand in the middle of Kalm's town square and be able to turn 360 degrees.
We want the same thing that we've been having, but we want to be immersed more deeply. Immersed again.
Advent Children, in it's complete failure to visit familiar locations (even the Forgotten City scene became about fighting on a dirt road and in ghosty-trees -- none of which existed in the OG) didn't give us that immersion we wanted. Dirge of Cerberus changed those locations into horrible-looking, poorly-contrived, 3PS dungeons that lacked the atmosphere and look of the original. Crisis Core was about as close as we got, but the time spent in those places was brief in the super-linear episodic nature of the game (and again, making it for a handheld system was a fucking stupid choice).
I want to fly around in the goddamn Highwind for 100 hours and go any place I goddamn want. I want to watch old scenes with new graphics. I want to be immersed again.
