At the time of this post there's only some hours left before 2016 wraps up and 2017 begins.
During the course of 2016 there has been strong announcements for the future of gaming (in both software and hardware) as well as the release of multiple games that left strong impressions among critics and fans.
With that said, How did your 2017 in gaming play out? Could you play all games you wanted? Did any of the games you were looking fordward to deliver? Tell us below!

As far as how the year was for me:

Unfortunately I couldn´t play any of the games released this year cause I lacked both the platform in which they were released and because I´m short in money. However, it´s good that most of the anticipated games released this year were highly well received by the critic.

The highlisths from 2016 for me where the announcement of the new consoles updates for both PS4 & XB1, the announcement of Nintendo Switch, the release of VR hardware (and its early games/demos) and last but none the least, Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian finally seeing the light of days and both being highly well received by the critics and fans.

For me 2016 was a really good year in gaming

Mainly rubbish for me. I can't afford to play anything new and other than the Last Guardian there was nothing that I really wished I could play.

I played a lot of games that I'd cued up over the years, so 2016 in gaming for me was the Mass Effect trilogy, the first two Arkham games, and another go at FFVIII and Starcraft. So a pretty good year in gaming for me! But I don't think that's the question, so I'll sit down now.

Mafia 3 wasn't bad but was a disappointment, same with no man's sky.
Which I like, mainly because my expectations were average, (I didn't buy into the hype).

I was looking forward to Technomancer but eh... I cba to mini-review it now.

I've been playing the remaster of Skyrim (which is an old game) & Darkest Dungeon (which was early access in late 2015 and came out proper in January I think.)

I dunno it's hard to think of any game that came out this year that I really enjoyed or spent alot of time with. Fallout 4 is probally the game I spent the most time on this year and that was released in 2015.

So... last year was better. :P

I played a ton of games this year and had a lot of fun in the process, but I don't think so much as one of those games came out in 2016. Like Octo, new games are too expensive for me. I pretty much always wait until something hits 50℅ of its original price before getting it. I'm some cases I wait even longer. And it's fine - I'll still enjoy FFXV in a year or two as much as I would have done this year - but I'll have to abstain from voting in this poll because I have no idea :P

World of Final Fantasy was a delightful surprise and took over my free time for a few weeks. FFXV was/is a lot of fun and Uncharted 4 was excellent. Those three games alone could probably carry the year for me. And even though Overwatch isn't totally my kind of game, it's given me a great reason to interact with my college roommates regularly again :)

^ Square Enix has said it is going to do alot of post-launch updates to FFXV, Jim Sterling did a video on it:

The best version is probably going to be a 'complete' or 'ultimate' edition in a years' time. So waiting on that is a good idea. :monster:

Why? Could you explain it?
No, because not only do I barely remember anything beyond the last two weeks, the sole title I can actually recall is Dark Souls III (which was fun). Dassit.

Everything else I played was either bad or I didn't play it because it didn't strike me as interesting in the first place. I don't usually bother with purchasing on release (and I don't purchase that many games in general because I just don't fancy most), but when I do, and it's a disappointment, it's like....fam. I gave you 60 - 80 easy......and this is what you do to me.....

I did an impromptu list of my favourite games of the year a couple weeks ago. I played a lot of games this year, though all on the PS4. I didn't play anything truly terrible but a lot of the more mediocre games were bloated triple A games with a lot going on but no real focus. Most (not all) of my favourite games were smaller scale affairs that set out to do one thing and did it really well. So I'd say it was a good year for games but the current triple A model is untenable and, honestly, boring. The list, in no particular order:

Thumper
The Witness
Firewatch
Salt & Sanctuary
Axiom Verge
DiRT: Rally
Neverending Nightmares
Oxenfree
Pac-man: Championship Edition 2
Inside
Virginia
Final Fantasy XV

They're not ranked, but for the record Inside was the best game. Just the best.

Gaming for me this year...

It was pretty good. I usually don't buy too many video games when they come out. I like to get a deal on them. I was playing some new released and also stuck to some games that didn't come out this year.

Now I will admit I am one salty person for thinking we'd get any, but the complete lack of Remake news was really disappointing. Over the entire year we'd only get tiny bits of info. Of course we are almost certain to get some new info/trailer come January 31st, and if not I've enter a new layer of salt. :monster:

Overall pretty good.

In order from older to most recent in this year.

The Division - It was fun for a bit, but after hitting max level the flaws became apparent and I haven't touched it since. Although it supposedly got a lot better with the updates so I may check it out again.

Dark Souls 3- I have almost 140 hours into my main character in this game, on NG+5 or 6 at least. Beaten the DLC too. However haven't touched in it a while, I will when the next DLC comes out. Awesome game, but I wish they'd remaster DKS1.

Overwatch - Like as Force said, isn't my type of game. I tend to stay away from PVP games, but Overwatch is great. (When you're winning atleast). Am awaiting what new updates hits the game next.

Battlefield 1 - I bought this and really didn't touch it. Feel like I wasted my money, as you need people to play with to get enjoyment out of it.

Final Fantasy XV - An unfinished masterpiece. Highly awaiting Gladio's Dlc for BloodBorne like content, and Gilgamesh boss fight. Love to see what they will add to this game. Haven't done everything yet, but I'll get around to it. Eventually.

Neir: Automata Demo- Worth mentioning because I am totally buying this game when it comes out.

DOOM- Just bought this one, love the multiplayer even if it takes some getting use to(reminds me of Halo 3 multiplayer, but faster paced) I will get around to beating it.

Games I've played but weren't released this year.

Runescape - Slight addiction, I need help. Gotten 4 skills to 99s in the past week alone.

SW:TOR- Gotten around to playing the DLC KOTFE and KOTET, and it's great. They should've raised the level cap to 75 imo.

WoW - Tried to get into WoW, but I couldn't. Got bored really quickly after hitting like level 37. Maybe I just need friends.

Witcher 3
- Just bought this one not far into it, but I will beat it. Seems pretty good so far.

Of course we are almost certain to get some new info/trailer come January 31st, and if not I've enter a new layer of salt.

I thought 2016 was a grain of salt for the lack of KH3 news, still no new info on whether the Remake of Final Fantasy VII will connect with the Compilation with new story content or not, and constant delays of most wanted games, but it did make up for Pokemon Sun/Moon.

Now, I have thought of up two main antagonists in two games I hadn't expected to be main antagonists.

Lusamine of Pokemon Sun and Moon: I thought Team Skull were the main bad guys with Guzmu or whatever his name was. But really, this time the crimininal organization are secondary antagonists with the Asther Founderation being the true evil organization with it's President Lusamine being the true main antagonist which caught me by surprise.

Ardyn: When the trailer when I saw him, I thought he was just a mysterious character secretly helping out while the Emperor of Nifilhiem being the main antagonist. So when Ardyn revealed himself as the true main antagonist, especially when he stabbed Lunafreya, I was shocked. Though I have to admit, but it wasn't as shocking as when Sephiroth killed Aerith.

I will have to say, these two games really resembled to Final Fantasy VII in more ways than one, with the former being more of a closer link of Final Fantasy VIII(Full renders and FMV thing)

So I wouldn't be surprised if Pokemon Generation 10 will start having voice actors, or even in generation 8 or 9.

I think 2016 wasn't half bad at all to be honest. If you didn't think many great games came out this year maybe you should broaden your game genre horizons. Or a get a PC so you can enjoy tons of amazing indie games.

I mean I'm not saying 2016 was like 2004 tier where great games came out back to back to back (seriously check out the releases in 2004 its insane). It's most certainly not 2014 tier though (one of the worst years in gaming imo).

Off the top of my head

Darkest Dungeon. Phenomenal game. It proves that classic turn based RPG's can still sell, and sell on non-mobile platforms for that matter. It suffers in the late game, but the early game is some of the best RPG you can get. They also gave it some Rogue Like features which actually go over so well both thematically and as a feature set.
Before Darkest Dungeon I was pretty much done with the classic JRPG style and thought it was pretty boring. This game brought it back for me. If you haven't played it get it. Pirate it or w/e idc lol It's a fun game.

StarmotherfuckingDew Valley. Need i say more? Seriously just get it it 's only 15$. It's such an impressive little game both in the fun department and behind the scenes. It was developed by one guy. Everything, the art , the music, the programming all 1 guy while his GF worked and kept them alive. It's a really nice Cinderella story, they've made like 25 Million so far on Steam alone lol.

Dark Souls 3? The end to one of the best series in recent memory. How many games can you say have basically gone 5 titles deep and either got progressively better or at least stayed good in that span in recent memory. None right? lol It's a hard game but good lord is it fun.

Doom. Fuck the story (though its there if you want to) fuck the hand holding dross of tutorials and walk/talk segments. Were here to kill some fucking demons!

Seriously Doom has the best intro. Like hands down ever. Your killing a Demon with in like 10 seconds of hitting start and then get his up with this shit right after

Hell yeah. It's just good visceral fun that tells all the grandstanding shenanigans from other FPS games to fuck off and it does it with so much style. Sure the Multiplayer is hot garbage and SnapMap is not anywhere close to being an adequate replacement for mod tools, but damn that single player though.

WoW : Legion. It's Wrath of the Lich King tier by many peoples standards in the MMO/WoW community. That's saying a lot when it comes to MMO's.

Overwatch. No paragraph here it's hands down the best multiplayer game released in recent memory.

Firewatch was one of the most delightful and just *good* gameplay experiences I've had this year. It was short and sweet and if IRL hadn't interfered I would have played it all in one sitting. That said while I was AFK I was itching to get home asap and pick up where the story left off.

Xcom2.

Hyperlight Drifter

Owlboy

Theres a few more but I don't want to go on lol.

The year in reflection I think 2016 is a good showcase of quality of quantity. We didn't get a ton of good stuff, but some of the stuff we got was truly great and will be remembered , replayed and enjoyed for years to come.

For me it was another good year of gaming. Although, I think I spent half of it on Fallout 4 :P
Other than that: Project CARS, Uncharted 4, Deus Ex, Rise of the Tomb Raider, FF XV, Pro Evo 2017 and Gravity Rush remastered. IMO Uncharted 4 was the best game of 2016.
