Live Action Akira to be PG-13

Albert Hughes talked about this on The Kevin and Josh Movie Show on 106.7 HD2 (CBS RADIO – Washington D.C.) quite recently and discussed the idea behind a PG-13 Akira. “The first thing they said to me was it had to be PG-13,” Hughes said and then followed up with labeling it as either being “a challenge” or a “hind-ridge.” The best thing Hughes said he could do was make it feel like The Dark Knight. That’s something every filmmaker name drops nowadays and there’s some truth there that it did push the PG-13 pretty hard, but you could easily also argue it was a bit held back by being PG-13. That’s a whole different topic altogether, but again, it’s a comparison nearly every director makes now.
When asked about the unbelievable challenge of adapting Akira, Hughes himself admitted it would be tough, but likes the fact it’s going to be a challenge. There’s a lot of material there, but some of that may and has to be stripped down, “I want to simplify everything for the audience.” I doubt he means dumbing it down, but something like Akira doesn’t have the most mainstream appeal to it. It’s understandable that they’d want to elaborate on certain aspects or cut things out altogether.
As for it being a two parter, Hughes commented that he may not come back the second time around despite the opposite belief. “I’m not into sequels,” he explained. “I don’t even know if I wanna be around for the sequel. I’m just focusing on the first movie.” I’d hope if the first outing is successful then hopefully the Hughes Brothers would be return behind the camera, but for now, his words don’t seem to hopeful.
The idea of a PG-13 Akira is a bit questionable, but I have trust in the Hughes brothers. They’re solid filmmakers and definitely have the skills to craft a world as rich as Akira. Hopefully, that’s what we end up with.

ffs just shut this shit down -__-.

I don't understand how this article can be even a little bit hopeful. The Hughes Brothers have directed some really terrible movies.

I've not seen anything they'd made, but this sounds disappointing but predictable as far as trying to get as much money out of it as possible goes.

PG-13 Akira?

Hilarious.

And NAY to cutting things out just because you're too lazy to try in make it epic instead of just decent.

One of the criticisms about the anime movie was that it was too condensed. Now they're going to condense it even further.

Congratulations!

Surely then if it's pg 13 then lil sammy is going to shit himself when they actually get to the point where he starts mutating.
Let alone the potential rape scenes and motorcycle violence.

It's way too soon to say whether the movie's good or bad (we haven't even watched it for Christ's sake). I can't understand why it's so hard for some people (let alone fans) to keep an OPEN mind about movie adaptations of anime/manga.

It's like Dragon Ball Evolution all over again. You have to accept the fact that there WILL be changes made. Say we kept the movie fundamentally the same to the manga/anime in every aspect. Will all audiences be pleased? No...people will still complain about it.

Bottom line: no matter how the film gets made, faithful or not, it's not going to please everyone.

Since its release, Dragonball: Evolution has received overwhelmingly negative reviews and has been largely shunned by both the critics and fans of the series. On Rotten Tomatoes it scored 13%, while on Metacritic it got a 45/100. Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network, originally disgusted at otaku (ardent fans) who decried the film via leaked set shots and trailers before the film's release, gave the movie an overall failing grade and stated "the fans were right." He criticized the film's lack of explaining plot elements, its hackneyed storyline and lackluster effort by the actors.[45] Variety's Russell Edwards found the film "passable", "pleasing if paint-by-numbers," noting it "doesn't take itself too seriously, but avoids campiness," that "the climactic clash between Piccolo and Goku offers a faithful CGI representation of the ethereal powers as drawn in the original manga" and that the climax offers an "impressive character twist for Goku that will warm the cockles of every young Jungian's heart."[46] Luke Thompson of E! Online referred to the film as a "the worst movie ever made, it makes the original cartoon look bad" that would only make sense to fans of the original series. He questioned the use of a Caucasian in the main role and felt Chow Yun-Fat was "overacting like never before", but did consider it "fun in a train-wreck kind of way" and that while it was never boring it was also never "logical, coherent [or] rational".[47] Bill Abrahamus of the science monthly publication, 'Science Magazine', also echoed these sentiments, stating that "I simply just cannot accept that millions of years of human evolution could produce such an offensive cacophony of depravity and worthlessness."

Well apparently, no one who watched it. :awesome:

When the people responsible for the film have a miserable track record of turning out utter dreck, and give every indication that they don't give even the tiniest bit of a damn about being faithful to the source material, then I think it's safe to assume that their product is probably going to be complete and utter shite. Sure, no film can please everyone, but the way things are going it looks like this shit isn't going to please anyone.

And I don't know any serious fan of any work who wants adaptations of it to make random and completely arbitrary and unjustifiable changes to the source material. Seriously that shit is fucking retarded.

Also when your casting director says they want a diverse culture in their films and asks Koreans to show up in fucking kimono to show off their culture. /ATLArant

Why they can't get Japanese people is beyond me. A casting director like that wouldn't know the difference between Korea and Japan. And that's just sad.

On the subject of cultures, have they said anything about planning on changing the setting of Akira from Japan to America or something?
