I'm sure fans would beg to keep the story in Japan. But for me, I don't really mind if they want to move the setting to America.

I do. America isn't the fuck end all be all of EVERYTHING, and it's not like we are fucking incapable of filming in other countries. FFS the entire LotR trilogy was filmed in New Zealand.

I can't stand it when Hollywood does dumb shit to make a film more "relatable" to fans, like change a character's race/nationality, to more generic white people, because whites are the only relatable people in america. It's not like this country was founded on immigration hurrr. I mean, god forbid we be faithful to the source material which already proved itself to be massively success on its own right?

And Dragonball evolution was a terrible film on all accounts. There is no logical way anyone can say it's objectively a good film, unless they think it's entertaining because it's so crap.

On the subject of cultures, have they said anything about planning on changing the setting of Akira from Japan to America or something?

They wanted to change the entire cast of eva to a bunch of white people and set it in New York.

What do you think?

It's way too soon to say whether the movie's good or bad (we haven't even watched it for Christ's sake). I can't understand why it's so hard for some people (let alone fans) to keep an OPEN mind about movie adaptations of anime/manga.

It is already bad the moment they said 'PG-13' instead of 'R' like it should be. If they can't even keep it to the demographic the original source material was intended for, then they have already made a failed film my friend.

That's like saying Evangelion live action can be made with a 'G'- rating and hoping for a high universal acclaim. xD

They seriously did that? There aren't enough facepalms in the world.
Not only that, but Jackson Rathbone, Sokka's actor, felt that he could totally play

with a healthy tan. Now imagine if Sokka was obviously black, they picked some white dude to play him, and said actor said he'd just need to tan for the role.

I guess it's a good thing he plays the Confederate soldier vampire in Twilight! :awesome:

hmmm I dont know what to think. Book of Eli was decent, and pretty violent. That was a 15 here in the uk. I would expect at least that level of violence.

The Dark Knight got a PG cert somehow, so thats at least some relief that it'll have some amount of violence... but not much.

I think they'll need a 15 cert if the want to do a half decent job.

You know it's funny, people say dumb shit like a character's race, appearance and nationality don't matter(which is retarded, it's a part of what makes them who they are, and how you identify them as who they are), but when you say something like, what do you think of a LoTRs movie with a predominately African American cast as the leads, people get butthurt.

It's like Dragon Ball Evolution all over again. You have to accept the fact that there WILL be changes made. Say we kept the movie fundamentally the same to the manga/anime in every aspect. Will all audiences be pleased? No...people will still complain about it.

Bottom line: no matter how the film gets made, faithful or not, it's not going to please everyone.

Considering the story came as a result of Japan struggling with WWII PTSD... then yeah, it's kind of a big deal, since the story is so intrinsically linked to a tragic cultural historic event. The fact that America, of all countries, is doing an adaptation is a bit of a slap in the face, to say the least.

It's the same thing why movies like the Karate Kid and Pearl Harbour fail so hard. Forget about other cultures, Hollywood has shown time and time again they don't even know how to respect their OWN history :\

Yeah having the country that wantonly slaughtered millions of your civilians for no other reason than to force an unconditional surrender adapt a work that was borne out of the suffering directly resulting from said slaughter is one of the most insulting things I can possibly imagine. Having said nation reset said work in its own territory would be many times worse over still.

I watched 'From Hell' and thought it was an average film. Haven't watched 'Book of Eli' so I can't say anything about it.

In your own words, why wouldn't a G rated Evangelion work (not saying it's a decision I'd make, mind you)?

They toned down Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the dark and gritty comic books they were to the Saturday morning kids show and audiences didn't mind (as far as I'm aware). Same goes with all the DC and Marvel cartoons you get.

Seems a majority of you guys bear a lot of resentment against Hollywood, which I don't blame. I admit, they have brought out some terrible films, but that's not to say they haven't brought out some brilliant ones as well, past or present.

I take a neutral stand with Hollywood. I neither praise them nor do I condemn them. I have mixed feelings, all in all.

As for Akira, say what you wish about this new 'adaptation'. For me, I'm fine whether it's set in Japan, America, China, Mars...anywhere. I hold my reservations for this film for now, even as an individual who enjoyed watching the original Akira. I'm very open to changes, whether they're made or not. And when it's released, I'll go see it with neutral expectations.

Consider what Armake21 (a man who lives to rip everything to shreds, especially bad video games) said about Dragon Ball Evolution. He went in to watch the movie with no expectation and he enjoyed the film as it stood alone. I think it's best to watch these kind of films WITHOUT any expectation and just accept it as it is.

Or...you can just have fun bashing the film and nit-picking it to death. That's up to you.

Of course, feel free to disagree with anything I've said if you want. Just sharing my thoughts here. ^_^

Have you ever even seen or read Akira?

I have to ask, because if you're okay with it taking place in China or Mars, then something tells me you "don't get it." And I'm not being a smart ass.

If you don't even know or understand what Akira is about, or its story, then I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't care. But if you did, then I have to ask, what the hell is the point of remaking a franchise or series for Hollywood and then changing every single fundamental aspect so that it bears little but the name in common.

What's the fucking point? Aside from making money off the goddamn name, of course.

If you're going to make something so radically different than the source material, why not just make an original movie?

Why the hell should we not expect a movie with "X" in the title, to live up to said title? That's like buying a box of Corn Flakes and throwing out all expectations of cereal and said flakes to be in the box.

No. I'm not going to just sit back and be okay with raw meat and fish coming out of a box of corn flakes. If I'm buying corn flakes, then give me my goddamn corn flakes.

Right. Because what they're doing is bastardizing a franchise just for the sake of piggybacking on the title, and thus making lots of money.

Hollywood needs to stop being pussies and make some original fucking content. Sequels, spinoffs, and franchise movies can only go so far before they become stale and derivative. It's frackin' annoying seeing every studio trying to cash in on whatever is the hottest selling label of the year.

I've bitched about TMNT a good bit, and those Marvel and DC cartoons do stay as true to the characters as they can be without being too explicit for children(JLA did this particularly well).

They didn't turn Batman in a 60 year old asian man defending a slum in korea, and they didn't change the catalyst that made him who he is, even in Brave and the Bold(which has many nice nods to the comics).

Even then, a feature film, something that a much larger portion of the population will be exposed to, is a different affair entirely. There has never been a good adaptation of an anime, simply because they stray too far from the source material and what makes it good. Hell they couldn't do justice to a cartoon made in america inspired by anime.

It's silly to think that all of a sudden that an anime adaptation will be good when it goes against what made that anime great. I had no expectations for Evolution(looked terrible from the onset but it had the potential for good laughs), but it was so terrible/cheesy/badly directed that I couldn't help but be embarrassed to be an adult watching this film around other people.

Can't say you're wrong, dude. In the words of James Rolfe: "the whole f*cking industry is built off of sequels and remakes and TV show adaptations!" :loopy:

From hell was painfully average compared to the book it was based off of.

Hey man, they're twice the medium video games'll ever be. Roger Ebert said so.

Sure, I'm not stating that having no expectation for a film means you're automatically going to like it. I hadn't much idea of what Evolution was about before watching it, but that movie came out plain boring for me...:shifty:

Trying to 'adapt' an anime series into a film is a VERY delicate subject, even for the Japanese movie industry (besides Hollywood). I remember watching the live-action adaptation of Saikano, and found it disappointing.

It's a retarded attempt at trying to squeeze some money out of existing material rather than try and develop something new.

That's why I'm looking forward to "Inception".

Kind of an odd choice to squeeze money out of though. Yes Akira was popular as far as anime films go...20+ years ago. The only flock to fleece are the diehards who aren't gonna like it anyway.

I dunno, just seems like an odd choice.

You're really surprised Hollywood has its head up its ass and doesn't know what target demographic its shooting for? Really? :awesome:
