No, it was that they relocated that shit from LA to New York.

That's why it was a disaster.

And while we're talking about changes that utterly destroy any relevance source material may have, just what were they thinking giving Spider-Man organic webshooters and making Mary Jane the literal girl next door? I don't know about you guys, but I just couldn't take the movie seriously after all that.

Akira being set in America with assumedly white heroes, changes the story entirely, whether you realize it or not. You wouldn't turn the cast of Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter into a bunch of black people. But I guess this shit is okay so long as the original characters were Asian, right?

No, I thought "21" was retarded as well. It all really depends on the context whether changes like that are serviceable to the story to be told.

If you're trying to tell a story about the atmosphere of Japan at a certain time, then you'd want to use Japanese actors. If you want to speak to a different culture whose present context bears a striking resemblance, you may not feel as inclined to do so.

If anything, going with a racially diverse cast would be the best call.

But as Mako said, I'm assuming a different approach to how this should be done than these filmmakers likely have.

Racially diverse like Power Rangers and similar 'diverse cast' series? You know, where you can determine the exact representation of male / female, black, and other races by sheer statistics relative to the amount of characters. Of course, main roles are usually reserved for caucasian male / female. Black people have a higher chance of playing comic relief or bad boy, asians a higher chance at being nerds.

Lost seems especially forced in this aspect, imho. Of course, I probably couldn't discern a statistically balanced cast with a real 'neutral' one these days.

Because that's okay if the black protagonist is cool. Nobody complains about white people. In fact, the only complaints about white people in movies I've heard and can remember are movies where they've replaced a non-caucasian with a caucasian (case in point: this, Prince of Persia, probably a couple others).
