It sounds like the scene was originally supposed to be of Aerith and Zack, and Uematsu wrote the song for that. Maybe they decided later on to keep Zack's presence as a mystery until the Lifestream reveal? That could be why they used that scene for Elmyra and her husband instead.

IIRC, ACC made it even clearer that it's the kids' room -- we see an early scene where Denzel wakes up in one of the beds in that same room and Marlene's sitting beside him.
