Now that you've seen what happens to Crono at Guardia Castle, what do you think - is anything in the game familiar to you now, considering that Chrono Trigger is 20 years old? (extra points to Roger for seeing this coming)
I think you're drawing parallels to games I haven't played, so other than what I said last time, no:D.

What was your verdict, and why?

Not guilty. I have no clue. B sitting right next to me gave pretty much the same answers as me and got guilty.

How do you feel about the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Arris Dome - it this something you see as reasonable, possibly even something you might yourself do in their situation?

The whole place is really sad... Their actions (or rather inaction) isn't exactly reasonable mathematically speaking, but definitely humanly understandable. We have no idea (as yet) how long they might have been looking for a solution, a way out, an alternative, before we got there. And thus I think I may have done the same, yes.

Do you have a favorite character so far, and why (whether you do or not!)?

It's pretty early, and thus hard to choose, especially since all the characters are so likeable. But I think Lucca is pulling ahead. She's a nerd, and birds of a feather...

Chapter 2: We must change history!

Questions:
[*]Now that you've seen what happens to Crono at Guardia Castle, what do you think - is anything in the game familiar to you now, considering that Chrono Trigger is 20 years old? (extra points to Roger for seeing this coming)

It does have many FF similarities. Mostly it still puts me very much in mind of BoF, though. Maybe that's just me. But that's more on the art/gameplay lines. In terms of plot stuff/choices & consequences/tropes (if you will), I can see how it may have influenced a lot of later games, such as Mass Effect, or Elder Scrolls (as others have mentioned too :D). I'd say this seems quite an advanced, game-changing game. I mean, even in later FF's and other RPG's, choice isn't really a huge thing. There it can affect the whole game.

[*]What was your verdict, and why?

Guilty, 4-2. I ate the old man's lunch, left the cat (though I tried, I swear), and tried to sell the pendant. Soooo.... yeah.

[*]How do you feel about the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Arris Dome - it this something you see as reasonable, possibly even something you might yourself do in their situation?

Well, I can see how they might not know how to fend for themselves right away, but surely they could try? I know I'd suck at it, but I'd still try to figure out how to grow food, or hunt for it. I mean, it seems like their food seeker died quite a while ago, so they should have tried something? That's what I think.

[*]Do you have a favorite character so far, and why (whether you do or not!)?

FROOOOOG! He's just so cool. And I like Chrono, purely for his ouch-dealing-ness. Lucca kind of annoys me a bit, she's so...stereotypical, I guess? I'm a nerd, with glasses, and all that stuff, but I don't act like a genius, with the pose and the glasses swishing thing. Kind of like Ishida Uryuu, from Bleach. They both just put me off somewhat. Maybe she's actually self-conscious and trying to hide it? Anyway, Marle. Marle is okay. No major feelings one way or another re: Marle.

FFVII's date (well, the mechanics that control who you get) are very similar to the trial - just like FFX's affection rating :P Practically all of the FFVIII sidequests follow a similar method to CT's (you get a vague mention of it and a location and then you're on your own). Heck, as far as I know (and I could definitely be mistaken here), the presence of multiple endings (if memory serves there's over a dozen) was something that hadn't really been done before (Street Fighter and the character endings for games like FFVI don't really count imo).

It doesn't hurt that Square made Chrono Trigger as well, but its influence is felt by just about every RPG that's come since, and a few non-RPG games as well (as a fan, Dark Souls immediately springs to mind).

Just one of the many reasons I love this game so much :D

edit: well, the pendant isn't yours :P

It's time travel done right.

What was your verdict, and why?

Guilty. I forgot what to do:neom:

How do you feel about the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Arris Dome - it this something you see as reasonable, possibly even something you might yourself do in their situation?

They didn't have much of a choice when combined with an element in the nearby area that is discovered much later.

Do you have a favorite character so far, and why (whether you do or not!)?

My favorite character has yet to appear.

Chapter 3: No! Let's take care of YOU!
9th - 11th Jan 2015

We rejoin our heroes as they struggle to find a way to get back home...for starters. Naturally, they've also got the rather pressing (depressing?) matter of the end of the world to deal with as well, but first things first: activating the Time Gate. Unfortunately, there's a tiny little problem...

Our target here is a mysterious new place that seems to have some guy sleeping. There's a convenient save point, so you don't actually have to interact with anything in order to get to the stopping point.

Questions:
-Did you enjoy the minigame? :P
-Describe your reaction to the scene immediately before this chapter's (primary) boss fight.
-Did you get lost in the Factory Ruins?

...or, like some people (me...sigh), did you save your game and resume later, only to forget what you were doing and what you had and had not done, causing you to have to go back and redo the entire area?

This thread is making me want to get a PlayStation USB Save Converter thing and toss my PS1 save file over to my PS3 and see if I can catch up, because I only have two endings I haven't gotten on my NG+ (Slide Show & Reptite).

At the very least, I wanna keep up and see what all of you think of it.

(Also, is everyone playing a version with "ye olde" Frog or is there a split?)

I've noticed that Square reused the concept of death being a dark place where it's cold and the victim being alone for XIII-2.

Chapter 1

I'm so behind...

But I will still do this, you guys are helping me knock out my backlog (yes it spans decades). I haven't gotten to chapter 2 yet, but this is the farthest I have gotten since I first played this game in 2006. Back then I made the choice between $70 SNES Chrono Trigger, and $25 Final Fantasy Chronicles. I chose the second one. Then I put the game down because of the loads. Out of all 6 ports in the FF Anthologies, it is ironically the longest loading game.

So this is my legitimate first time playthrough of the game, with some Internet meme knowledge. I also know enough that Lucca's theme is best theme, and definitely best fanfare theme of any game ever.

What are your initial impressions of the game? Or (as many have already played the game), what were they the first time you started?

I don't really remember this game from my SNES days. My mind blends it with Secret of Mana, probably because the main characters are so similar in design. I'm more familiar with the Soulblazer series, particularly Illusion of Gaia, as I have completed that game multiple times, and still own it. The main character and plot of that game are also of the CT and SoM vein. In case you want more of these games, hunt that down too, it's good.

Chrono Trigger is coming up on its 20th anniversary this year; how well (or poorly) do you feel it's held up overall (using any criteria you like)?

Since Toriyama's work is all over this, I lump Chrono Trigger in with the Dragon Quest style of design and mechanics--more silent protagonist and atmosphere + exploration. (Which reminds me, I will gladly start a new game for DQVIII if you guys are up for a playthrough. I've been trying to finish that game for 9 years now.)

The game holds up incredibly well. The sprites are colorful, and they translate the Dragonball designs very accurately. I have seen some of the cutscenes and I bet Toei had a ball creating them. You can tell they were fans.

I am a huge fan of composer Yasunori Mitsuda, ever since picking up Xenosaga Episode 1 and Xenogears, and am familiar with a load of tunes in CT. I picked my Turtle Beaches at a very good time-- the sound is a large part of this game and the PS1 port is very crisp.

What type of playstyle and/or mentality are you coming into the game with - do you go and explore and mess around or do you follow the story?

I had to get past the load time hurdles, but after a while my mind turns them off. As you can see in my video I examine the entirety of rooms and talk to everybody at least once. Also, if they don't want you to check trash cans for loot, why so many of them? ><

As you can also tell I am stubborn with those minigames. They were wise in letting me get back to them after Chapter 1--I will finish them. +.+ I'm going to do my best in completing the game as close as I can without a walkthrough, barring whatever is discussed in this thread, keeping my eye out for gear/items, or if I need advice for something insanely difficult. I say this because I've been lazy with RPGs before and used player's guide verbatim instead of being natural about it. I don't want to do that here.

With that said, I will probably miss things on this playthrough to advance the story. FFVI has choices that make you want to play the game differently, usually gear-based (making the choice between an Esper and a Sword for example.) Something tells me this game will do the same thing.

Have you noticed anything familiar in the game - ideas, concepts, characters, designs, gameplay, anything at all? (This will be a recurring question from time to time!)

I'll conclude with what I've said before--Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Illusion of Gaia/Soul Blazer, Secret of Mana, all of these games should be in an SNES collection. I have played through FFXIII-2, so I'm going into this curious as to how faithfully FF13 based the timeline mechanics from Chrono Trigger.

As I am playing through a few dungeons in DQ8 right now, the castle in Chapter 1 shares a lot of the same atmosphere. Both games' locales are very dark without having to point anything out in text-- the visuals do a nice, clean job. The church monsters are silly, but also clearly bloodthirsty. Felt like I was in a cemetery after hearing what they had to say in the church pews, before they transformed.

Lucca reminds me a lot of Fio Germi from the Metal Slug series, in glasses, gear, and personality.

Not sure what the gameplay reminds me of, a nice cross between the Tales games (unified attacks) and Zelda (overhead map), probably. This time I'm taking advantage of the Tech moves--Crono has nice sweeps for multiple targets. I'm still getting used to selecting what target I want though, the flashing select hands are throwing me off.

Yes, same Skype times as before (22:00 UTC, two hours from now - there's a full list of timezones on my earlier post).

Frog, perhaps you could include the times on all odd-numbered chapters from now on? We'll keep doing it at the same time unless there's a demand for it to be changed.

I'll add my chapter 2 write-up to this thread after I've written it. :monster:

Remember, though, you're going to go in and take care of some very important story information, stopping after you've done that and leave. Just be sure to take some snacks, because you're still going to be hungry after resting.
What snacks? I couldn't find any to buy.

Now that you've seen what happens to Crono at Guardia Castle, what do you think - is anything in the game familiar to you now, considering that Chrono Trigger is 20 years old? (extra points to Roger for seeing this coming)
There's a trial in Final Fantasy X where the player's party is sentenced to death (in the least efficient way possible). And, just like in Chrono Trigger, they are innocent.

That's probably not what you were thinking of. I've never liked cryptic clues. :P

What was your verdict, and why?
Ah, dammit. By asking that question you have revealed that it's possible to get either verdict. I got guilty but I was looking forward to playing the game again in the future to see if I could change it.

How do you feel about the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Arris Dome - it this something you see as reasonable, possibly even something you might yourself do in their situation?
If I ran out of food I'd probably be pretty despondent too. But they're weird. Even after I did everything in their basement, most of them still had exactly the same dialogue, including one asking "who are you?".

Do you have a favorite character so far, and why (whether you do or not!)?
Crono is a beast in battle, but Frog has probably been my favourite character in story terms.

Other thoughts:
  • It was kinda stupid that the trial started in the first place without listening to the Princess. Perhaps the Chancellor isn't an entirely good character, just like the impostor from the past...
  • It's awesome that the optional things I did at the fair were brought up at the trial. But after the verdict was given, it was ridiculous that Crono's sword wasn't taken away and that the guards were so weak. I one-shotted a few of them.
  • It was also ridiculous that the soldiers at the end didn't even attack, and that I couldn't attack them. I just had to bump them out of the way, but of course, that didn't work once I was in Guardia forest. They forced me into the gate even though it would probably have been easy to defeat them. I thought it was really poor game design.
  • How come some rats steal items from me and some rats can be fought? I want to kill all of them and get my potions back!
  • Knowing that Arris Dome was the ending point for the chapter, I made sure to go everywhere else first. Some guy in the south said "don't go to Death Peak", which, of course, made me go to Death Peak. It's just a name anyway, right? :monster:
  • I started to appreciate the combat mechanics, like the position of enemies, more in this chapter. There were too many fights though; it felt really grindy at times.

All these references to the loading times on the PS version make me glad it was the version I played first. I didn't notice them since I never knew anything else.

Chapter 3

-Did you enjoy the minigame? :P
The race? Nah, it was kinda stupid, no real skill involved due to the elastic AI. All I had to do was time my boost at the end to win, nothing else really mattered.
-Describe your reaction to the scene immediately before this chapter's (primary) boss fight.
What was this section's primary boss fight? I'm sorry, I played two chapters in the same day and I don't remember what order the bosses came in. :P
-Did you get lost in the Factory Ruins?
Not exactly. I covered the same area a couple of times unnecessarily but I always knew where I was.

Other thoughts:
  • This chapter was really short.
  • I took Marle with me to the factory ruins because of her healing ability. I wonder how things would have played out if I had taken Lucca, seeing as I left the location specifically to go back to her so she could repair Robo.
  • The names in this game aren't very original. The frog is called Frog, the robot is called Robo, and the main character is called Crono.
  • Suddenly, isometric world! Gasp!

I gave up after three tries because my timing with my boost was out. But walking looked like it was going to be one frustrating fight after another, so I kept at it. As Flint said, actually damn easy.

Oh man, such feels!!! Definitely put me in the mood to kick their butts.

Surprisingly, no. There will be plenty more opportunities though I'm sure.

I took Marle with me to the factory ruins because of her healing ability. I wonder how things would have played out if I had taken Lucca, seeing as I left the location specifically to go back to her so she could repair Robo.

I took Lucca. Missed Marle's healing a little bit, but one picks up a better weapon for Lucca in the factory, so I had that going for me, which was nice. If I ever play again (probably will) I'll take Marle though, because although the better gun might have brought Lucca's general attacking ability up to equal Marle, Marle has healing too. I only left Marle because I was cautious against maybe getting in a fight with the left behind party-member on their own.

With Lucca in your factory party you still leave to go fix him.

Surprisingly, yes. Got it on my second try, once I figured out the effective "range" of the boost. I think that helped me to like it, as I had no time to get frustrated with it.

-Describe your reaction to the scene immediately before this chapter's (primary) boss fight.

"ARGH YOU FREAKING ARSEHOLES GET OFF HIM I'M GONNA KILL YOU ALL!" And then I did, obviously.

-Did you get lost in the Factory Ruins?

Not exactly, covered it around and about a few times as my sound was off, so I didn't hear the crane beep, so I wasn't sure if I had done anything or not. But it was pretty easy, all told.

Also, I took Marle because heals, and I was glad I did.

Also also, Robo is my new favourite, with Frog in 1.5th place, and Crono in 2nd.

I did too! But I didn't find anything particularly valuable on the other side of the sewers, so it was a bit of a waste of time.
