Many forums have an accompanying chat room where members can chill and discuss random crap and whatnot. I was thinking maybe if we had one it would give members a place to just shoot the shit without having to worry about sticking to a topic or not being spammy, since a chat room is essentially spam that doesn't get archived forever, lulz. Ideally, not only would such a place give members a more casual environment to chat, but it might curb spam on the forums as well. Sort of like a General Fuckery in real time.

Yea? Nay? Has it already been tried and failed in the past? :awesome:

Use the Chit Chat thread, thats what its there for. That gets so busy sometimes that it is practically real time :monster:

A thread isn't really real time though, no matter how fast some of them are updated. You have to refresh the page to see if anyone just said anything 2 seconds before your post, whereas in a chat room you'd receive that as soon as it was said.

A chat room and a forum thread designated to chatting have totally different mechanics and one is not a sufficient substitute for the other.

To be honest, IRC is very different from a forum thread or most other methods of communicating via the internets. But I don't know how many people would use an IRC room if we created one.
