Minecraft

Only for a little though.

Per a barebones page on the Minecraft page, Markus Persson, aka "Notch," says that "Minecraft got way too popular for this humble server. I've had to disable everything fancy to even get it to run."
Presently, registering an account, buying the game and user verification for online servers are all inactive. But playing the game and player skins still work.
"Until this all gets sorted out, I'm officially calling a 'free-to-play weekend,' or however long this will take to fix," says Notch. "You will need to have a paid account to play it later on when this gets fixed though."
Check it out if you've wanted to see what its about without actually buying it.

I find myself baffled. "Yeah, the servers are offline, go and play it for free and overload my servers even more." This news'll spread all over the interwebz, and the website will get slashdotted.

I also wonder why he still hasn't just switched to a new server. Earlier, he had troubles with Paypal, where his account was blocked - with $600.000 in it. He then says he empties it every week.

You can't tell me he can't afford a proper server when earning 600.000 a week. I'd say 'fuck you' to his meetings and hiring of people and developing stuff and arrange for a better server first. It's not the first time he's had server issues, after all.

Really now. I think the guy'll get more money in the weeks to come, then it'll all come crashing down on him. The fad will wear off, probably before he even releases the 'official' version at the full price, and then he'll have no sales at all anymore.

Ok so minecraft is pretty much a sandbox game that randomly generates an entire planet three times the size of the earth for you to explore.... But in like 16bit or so blocks.
Yes it has N64 era graphics but if you can look past that then you can see straight to gaming genius. Once you start playing and get in the swing of things its really hard to stop playing this game.

Currently its in its alpha stage of testing but if you buy it now you get access to every update from this point onward for free(even the retail version too iirc).
Theres two modes available,

Creative mode, basically you are given every type of block in your inventory and you can make anything you want. You can make a server and invite some friends over and have them help you make what ever you want, or just fool around.

Survival mode, aka bear grylls style. Your plopped smack dab in the middle of the randomly generated world and left to fend for yourself, during the day the worlds beautiful but at night enemies spawn and will most likely kill you.
So what do you do? Well you make some shelter.
It sounds lame but once you get into the swing of things, its actually pretty darn great. Trust me, once you survive your first night your going to be hooked my first night was spent in a very small make shift wood and rock hut
listening in fear to spiders and zombies walking around just outside it.

Heres some really awesome vids of what can be done in creative mode.

And heres two of my vids, the first two definitely put mine to shame but these 2 creations took atleast 5-6 hours each just to construct in survival mode.

I hope you guys enjoy the vids, and it would be awesome if some of you got into this and gave it a shot. The actual game is only like 15$ but its very easy to torrent if you want to give it a shot before buying it too (thats what i did and inevitably ended up buying it right away).
Creative mode is still absolutely free on the minecraft site, but survival mode is where its at :D

That guy with the Enterprise thing are nuts, seriously, wtf. Must've took him weeks and no life at all. I once tried to make something 'biggish' (basically dig out a platform or something), but it took me hours of grinding (even in 'demo' mode) and it'd really help if I could speed things up by, oh, removing a hundred blocks at a time with one click.

Really now. :monster:

Tnt my friend, tnt xD

Actually i cant stand tnt anymore lol, its not as useful due to not only clearing out chunks of mountain but also making mahoooosive caves under it as well. It just becomes more about plugging holes in the ground then digging out mountain xD Its a pain in the but to make a decent amount of TnT as well without invdev (a tool that lets you edit your inventory).

My mind was blown when i found out you could make fully functioning clocks with red stone ore.
But a computer?

Reminds me of the computers and binary clocks / calculators they made in err... forgot the name. Sackboy's game.

If you can make binary clocks, you can also make the basic building blocks of CPU's.

Little Big Planet.

Can you make boats?

Like massive ships and stuff?
Yes and no, you can make a huge ship but it wont be ridable.
But you can make a small boat to ride around on the water and stuff, it beats swimming lol.

Heres a boat (and other things) made in creative mode

Im going to give a shot at recreating the shinra mansion (inside and out) in minecraft but i could really use some indepth screen shots of it inside and out. I want to make the feel as accurate as possible, so any help would rock.

If you like when im done making it and upload the video to youtube i could stick the TLS link/graphic into it :)
edit:
Oh and if this goes as smoothly as i hope it will, ill do my best to recreat nibleheim , maybe not the inside of the houses but for sure the outer portion to make it feel like a small village XD

Will do :)
Again though any screen shots would be awesome, so far all ive been able to get are very small caps of the stairs into the basement and an outside shot of the mansion from the middle of nibleheim village.
I already cleared out the area where ill build the mansion ( i even built into the side of a mountain to recreate mount. nible :D) im just reluctant to start building the actual mansion or even the fence due to my resources being very limited in game and out of game right now X)

I think Minecraft should win the international award for games encouraging its players to spend enormous amounts of time on trivial matters such as replicas of things and building computers inside them.

Why do quests and follow a story when all you need to do is dig holes and spend your time aimlessly building homes thinking wtf do i do now.

Inevitably to just log in the next day continuing the cycle.
Its like an mmorpg , except for some reason its alot more appealing x)

Probably because it's completely malleable (the game world) without taking as much time as its spiritual predecessor, Wurm Online did. The guy who makes Minecraft first did that one, and it's a lot more detailed and expansive and things... but also a lot more grind, if you want to do things like build roads or towns and things.

Which is a shame, really. The base idea of having an MMO world that is completely formed by its users is simply enormous.

Really, you should just open up Wurm once, and realize that everything was made by its players. The creators just generated a semi-random world and unleashed people onto it.
