I thought JENOVA and Sephy were basically more a partnership than either being in control. 'I'm good at messing with people's memories, you're good at killing stuff, let's collaborate to achieve our goals.'

In truth the whole plan to achieve the black materia and cast meteor does not require Cloud's presence at all. Sephiroth/Jenova could have left Cloud rotting in his cell back at SHinra HQ, and the plan would have gone on just fine.

It's not clear whether this is true. He needed someone else to get the black materia, and the other clones are not very functional. It's also possible he was following Cloud to find Aeris in the City of the Ancients.

Did Sephiroth gain all Jenova's abilities? I think things would've been much easier for Sephiroth if Cloud hadn't been involved :monster:

We've seen that individual pieces of Jenova's body can be detached from the whole, and still function, such as the arm on the cargo ship. Furthermore, Sephiroth seemed perfectly ok with throwing those pieces away in battle after battle with the party. They were disposable. There is no reason he couldn't just use one of those pieces to get the black materia, then grab it with the main body and hoof it to the NC.

I find it highly doubtful that Sephiroth needed to follow Cloud to find Aerith. Indeed, it seems from the dream that Cloud has after the Temple that Sephiroth was on her trail well ahead of Cloud. Besides, even if that were the case, there would be no need for him to track down Aerith at all if he'd just left Cloud and his group to rot in the Shinra building instead of unlocking their cells.

I think so. At the very least he's able to manipulate/influence beings with her/his own cells like she does. There's also a lot of non-Jenova Cell based powers that he has. Floating though solids, levitating people, controlling parts of the Lifestream... none of those are things Ilfana says Jenova was capable of doing. What Ilfana does say Jenova was capable of doing is looking like dead people from people's memories and Sephiroth definetly reads people's memories to mess with them in the Northern Crater.

I've always made this point as well. Seph is just dicking Cloud along for most of the game.

Yeah, agreed. Seph wasn't following Cloud to Aerith. He was baiting Cloud to go after her in the hopes of saving her just so he could make Cloud kill her himself. When that didn't work, Seph stepped in and did it in front of him, so he still got to use her death to screw with Cloud.

He has only himself to blame for that. :monster:

 Sephiroth really screwed up didn't he. His arrogance literally has no limits.

Depends on what her limits are, are the JENOVA pieces capable of complicated tasks beyond 'kill whatever's nearby.' We don't know.

We don't know how any of this stuff works. Who sent that dream? Did Sephiroth know where she was beforehand, or only because of eavesdropping on that dream? Did he send it himself? Maybe.
