What can I say

In my recent playthrough of VII I just finished rocket town. And guess what. Barret is hanging off the Tiny Bronco as it takes off. Anyone else remember Sazh, another black character hanging off of an airship in FF XIII?

Though by far the oldest and most mature hero in XIII, Sazh is the butt of jokes and has an afro, a hair style about as flattering to a modern black male as a mullet is to a modern white male. Oh and a chocobo lives in it. Way to degrade a character.

Barret is treated similarly in VII. Though hes the game's initial leader he is found to be incompetent to lead not once, not twice, but three times.

Cloud, Tifa, and Cid are all seen as better leaders. Did Barret not mastermind the destruction of two massive reactors?

Barret is also punched in Corel, which reminded me of this:

Square, like Hollywood, plays into racial stereotypes. I dont think either are racist and have something against blacks, they simply play into racial stereotypes to please the audience. The mainstream audience is uncomfortable with an "average" black man. He has to be the comic relief, ghetto, nerdy, the president/King, or some other eccentric personality or high position to be accepted and found interesting. For example "Hancock" had to be a wreckless, unkempt, homeless, womanizing drunk to be seen as entertaining. Simply having super powers and doing good is not enough for a black super hero to be accepted by the mainstream audience.

The point is Im disappointed Barret's big role in FFVII has done little to bring more black characters into Final Fantasy games, or more importantly give black characters roles or looks that are not degrading or play into stereotypes.

Oh, is Marlene an adoptive child?

In all serious, Barret and Sazh are awesome characters, and it's the immature FF fans who try and stereotype them, like those lame KFC jokes Sazh gets all the time, not SE. >>

You do have something of a point.

Japan has a very stereotypical perception of black people, let's put it that way...

Uh, no shit Marlene's adopted. Dyne is her biological father. It's right in the game.

And no, Barret and Sazh are not stereotypes, or degrading. You want stereotypes, go play Gears.

I'm partial to Gears characters because I've read the novels, which they provide characterization past stereotypes in. Also, I credit Gears for making of the better Hispanic characters in videogames, which are significantly less represented than most.

PS. Regardless of your argument about the racism or casual racism in Square, I fail to see how afro's are degrading, especially considering the bigger push in the industry.

I've heard a lot of stupid arguments as to why Barret is a stereotype, but this one might take the cake.

EVERYONE IS HANGING OFF THE TINY BRONCO WHEN IT TAKES OFF

I mean, did you even watch the scene?

Barret is not a stereotype. Stereotyped characters are shallow and undeveloped. If you think about it, you can fit all the main characters into a certain category (for instance, Cloud is the moody anti-hero), but the moment you bring nuance to their personalities is when they stop being canned characters. Barret has real hopes and dreams and pains that make him a credible human being and not just a token angry black guy.

His final conversation with Dyne is one of the most moving scenes in the whole game. A stereotype could never do that.

I'm talking about when the Tiny Bronco initially takes off.

I'm playing through FFVII the other day and I get to the scene. Cloud and Tifa jump on, Barret waits to the last second and grabs on to the end of the wing and is hanging off of it when it takes off initially. The scene immediately reminded me of Sazh hanging off of the flying thing in FFXIII. It upset me. Why is the black guy put in that situation in both games?

I looked up a FFVII walkthrough on youtube that had Cloud, Yuffie, and Tifa for that scene. Yuffie and Cloud jump on, and Tifa does the same animation as Barret, jumping on at the last second and hanging on for a while. This calmed me down a bit,

but,

I'm going to play through the scene with a few other characters to see if the game chooses Barret to hang on like that everytime over anyone else in the party.

I'm not saying Barret is horrible stereotype. I really like his character. Like I said in another thread he may be stereotypically angry, illiterate sounding, loaded with tattoos, insanely big, and a bad mouth, but that is offset somewhat by his kind and gentle tree hugging side, as well as Cid being an even bigger foul mouth.

Anyone want to explain why Barret was found incapable of being the party leader 3 times? He even wants to be the leader but everyone else is like....NO. Maybe if Obama had been in power when this game was made he would have the chance to lead. I know later he says he isn't cut out to be a leader, which I think is Square just trying to save face, but wasn't he the leader of Avalanche? And now suddenly he can't lead anymore?

Heres the thing. Can you guys imagine Final Fantasy XV having a black lead character? One that is just a regular 'ol guy? If not minorities in gaming have not come far enough.

Uh-huh...

What exactly are you complaining about? Others pointed out that Barret is more than meets the eye, exactly like all the other characters are. This is one of the themes of FFVII: take something, present it in a specific, stereotypical way and and then turn everything into their heads, revealing that they are a far cry from what they seem.

If anything, FFVII shatters stereotypes. Aerith is a far cry from the stereotypical sweet, quiet damsel, who is SUCH a speshul snoufleik, youneek, etc. So was Cloud. So was Tifa. Nanaki, the one who talked like a sage, turns out to be a kid. Yuffie, hyperactive she is, she has a serious pride for her homeland. Yadda, yadda. Barret's not an exception.

As for the Bronko, I think the third member of your party is the one that hangs from it. I think.

It depends who is in what slot in your party, I'm pretty sure. But you're clearly gonna look for bullshit reasons to get offended anyway, so I'm sure it doesn't matter.
