Looks promising. I take issue with the style though, large plain but flawless faces. Come on, you can do more realistic than that in this day and age.

seeing as how toy story one had a huge issue with their people dipping into uncanny valley, i can see why they went for a more cartoony look

Yeah, i find pixars style really expressive. Its just at the peak of the uncany valley. If they push further it would end up like Polar express

well someone should finally push past the uncanny valley already, I'm sure they can by now.

Well, they did try with Spirits Within, and succeeded in some ways, but theres something kinda odd about it. Even early AC shots show alot more skin texture etc, and they toned it down further on in the production.

I saw some previews for this and I'm really looking forward to it now.

Plus, badass female protag is always a bonus

New trailer in Japanese that is VERY different from what we've seen.

Writing: Her name is Merida Merida: Please, let me meet the witch Witch: Tell me your wish Merida: I want to be free Witch: This is a charm that will change your fate. (I can’t understand what that deep voice is saying, unfortunately) Queen Elinor: This is very sinister… The forest is making an uproar King Fergus: What on Earth is going on? Writing: The humans must follow the laws of the forest Random character: The law of the forest has been broken. This means war! Queen Elinor: What exactly did you do in the forest? Saw an advance screening of the film, while not the best Pixar film IMO (I would rank it somewhere in the middle of the 13 Pixar films), it definitely presents a very new type of story that most all-ages films rarely cover (in terms of character interactions, not necessarily plot). The mother-daughter relationship in the film really is the linchpin of the film and is fantastically portrayed. The visuals are extremely detailed and is sorta a land-version of Finding Nemo.

Also IMO the trailers were very misleading about the plot.

This movie was really adorable and a lot different than what anyone was expecting.

I think it was marketed in a certain way to appeal to a wider audience. Which kinda sucks when it comes to films that centre on female relationships.

I for one really loved the exploration of the mother-daughter relationship since they managed to keep the whole "find your own destiny" girl-power thing going on without making the relationship between them completely negative. In fact I was really pleased that the relationship between Merida and the Queen, while strained, was mostly positive. It was surprisingly realistic and down-to-earth.

More importantly though, I think this film sends a better message to parents on how to treat your kids.

It wasn't quite as grandiose as some other Pixar movies. There isn't some huge adventure like Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo or Wall-E. It was a movie about a mother and daughter trying to learn how to get along better and it was really heartwarming.

So, saw this film earlier today with friends. Quite enjoyed it. The plot was predictable, but not in a bad way, everything flowed naturally from the parts before it, and it was a fun ride. Merida was a great main character, and her whole family made for an excellent supporting cast.

Ending was cute, especially with the subtle change of the mother and her hairstyle at the end, to indicate she had changed, subtly.

I saw this movie, and loved it. It's very cute, with a good dose of humor, like always.

I just believe that it could be better fleshed out in areas. Usual comment from me. :P

My friends and I discussed the possibility of a sequel, and the general consensus was 'No,' but I do think there's potential for a sequel series- as in TV series- geared towards Merida exploring the forest and dealing with the strange things found therein, including occasional problems accidentally caused by the Witch Woodcarver.

That could be a cute children's series.

But anyway, I can't believe I forgot to post. I really enjoyed this movie quite a lot. Yes, the marketing was very misleading, but I feel that says more about society than Pixar. The film was wonderful, but if they had been forthcoming about what the plot was really about, I don't think people would have been interested in seeing it, which is sad because it's such an excellent movie.

This movie also made me very misty-eyed. It made me really want to go give my mom a hug. :3

Merida's relationship with her mother, mostly. That is the driving point behind pretty much everything that happens in the film.

Think Freaky Friday except that, instead of the mother and daughter switching bodies, the daughter accidentally turns her mother into a bear. :awesomonster:

I did forgot to mention, though, that there is one small thing about the movie that I did not like.
I did not like that the brothers got turned into bears by accident as well. I feel like it really took away from the eagerness of trying to save the Queen. It's like, yes Merida, cry over the fact that your mother will be a bear forever, because who who really cares that your younger brothers will all share the same fate?

I mean, it was cute and funny, and I'm sure kids loved it, but I kind of wish it hadn't happened.

Memento Mori
The thing with her brothers turning into bears could've been more interesting, if more things were noted, like you said. Except... it wasn't. Nor was there really the time, considering what the film was already doing.

Such as the fact that their father didn't even notice that they were MIA that entire time. Which, yeah, I get that he was taking care of their guests, but it still felt odd since he did seem like the type of father/husband that would notice? I mean, as his wife is SICK going up the steps, he seemed really concerned for her.

So while I do think the brothers being bears had its cute moments, I do feel that it was unnecessary. The movie had a lot going for it, but because of the time it left "more to be desired" I suppose.

Still, I rather enjoyed the movie. It was my first film in the theater since Harry Potter 3 (or Pirates 2, whichever came last), so it was kind of a big deal on that front.

I admit I wasn't too eager to see it before going in. However, I found myself enjoying the film and wouldn't mind owning it in the future. I wouldn't rewatch it too often, but I'd watch it again definitely.

I do agree, sadly, that if the advertisements hadn't been so misleading, less people would've gone. Which is rather sad on both fronts.

Anyways, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit over all and I think having a "childrens show" of her adventures would be rather fun, as well.

Looks like Merida got an unnecessary and character assassinating feminine makeover.

Not happy about this. The petition is almost at 130,000 signatures already, and they only need ~20k more.

I hope there is one for Mulan as well, her new design also puts her in the clothes she hated in her film.
