Ryuk is a shinigami - basically a Grim Reaper of sorts. They kill people by writing their names into notebooks (Death Notes). He intentionally drops one into the human world for lulz. Once a human picks it up, Ryuk has to haunt that human until they die or give up possession of the note. In other words, Ryuk is a stalker of epic proportions

Hence, Ryuk Jr
