EDIT: Also, I love Steve Burton as Cloud's voice. He's been perfect since day one.

I think it's always hard to voice act as a character who was introduced without a voice. Even when I hear the characters talk and think "that voice doesn't fit" I can't necessarily think of a voice that would. Felt this way especially for Sephy. However, I can't think of any of the post-voice acting FFs or any other fandom where the character had a voice from the first time they are introduced and I thought it didn't fit in the same way.

Same. I always figured that Cloud was supposed to appear (keyword: appear, not that he actually is) a monotone, boring nobody. Even the original FF7 emphasized that most people see him as a weird, unremarkable dweeb as a first impression. His dry, slightly accented voice characterizes why others may think that way, and it impresses his personality well to that end.

Yeah, he's perfect for a boring monotone drawl that has no range. For all my whining about Blum being rehashed AGAIN for Vincent, well at least Vinnie got a real voice actor.

I'm the exact opposite, I thought of dozens of VAs I felt would be perfect for the roles 2 years before AC even released in japan.

I too am a Burton supporter He was the only think that slightly redeemed Cloud's Kingdom Hearts incarnation for me. Also, comparitively, he's far better than some of the other choices they made (AC Aeris, Cid, Rufus DOC Genesis were all completely WTF).

I think Burton was okay as Cloud personally. Cid honestly...he didn't talk like a country bumkin in game (his speeches and etc). Cait Sith...don't remember being Irish or anything. But that's me.

Cloud is a pretty emotional dood if you look back on FF7, and I just don't feel Burton represented that. He's just too wooden.

^^mmm I agree, I found with a lot of the VA's it was more like a reading than voice acting.

About Cloud being emo, I never really felt it to be honest. Cloud is incredibly insecure and has experience trauma that's all. Everything felt true to his characterisation, I mean his self efficacy is something he has been battling with since he was child.

The modern definition is particularly laughable tbh. Cloud isn't an emo because emo bands particularly deal with expressing their emotions (often as violently and frantically as possible), whereas Cloud is slightly less expressive than a plank of wood.

I think Cloud was perfectly written. Unlike most heroes, like James Bond, they deal with tragedy and victory as if one naturally cures or creates the other.

You can save an entire world, but that doesn't always equate to resolving your own personal struggles - just as you can become a popular writer but still feel your writing is crap.

People don't function simply. To me, Cloud has had a life of tragedy where for the most part every action has lead to the death of something dear and personal. Saving the world I don't think would equate. You could save the world by shooting a child, but you wouldn't come out feeling victorious because you'd saved the world. You'd feel messed up over than one person far beyond the billions of children you've saved.

That's how people work, they don't carry objective sensibilities. As the story of Cloud goes, each chapter brings a tragedy. He feels culpable and helpless for so much of it and I can see how that could make someone who was already shy and inhibited closed off and withdrawn.

To me how he is in AC feels right for a senstive character who has seen the tragic death of his friends, his family and at one point, himself - the guy had a nervous breakdown.

I always think the term emo is insulting. It should apply to people or characters who don't have a reason to feel down, but just enjoy indulging in their own person self made angst. I think Cloud has damn good reason to feel guilty given the events in his life. And he was hardly the toughest egg in the box to begin with.
