For the first timers - just a PSA that may well not matter to you. If you go hard into the missions you will rapidly outpace the main the story in strength. You may not care or even prefer that, but I'm always a little bummed the first time through a story when all the tension has been sucked out because I'm overlevelled, lol.

Not that you can't do some missions and be fine, you obviously should do missions that give you the summons and some other good equipment even if you are like me. A few dozen isn't gonna make a noticeable difference. Just if you want to both shoot for Minerva AND be at a reasonable level for the story, I'd recommend saving most of them for the final save point :monster:

Full freedoms, no limits. The weak are trampled under the feet of the strong.

I can't freaking stop doing this :rage:lol
Believe it or not, I found myself nearly biting off more than I could chew on Mission 1-2-6, but I eventually managed to beat it on my 5th attempt.

It looks great and is a lot of fun to play. I keep finding myself using the Remake buttons so I'm using up all my potions when trying to dodge.

Fortunately, you can remap the controls so that Dodge is :circle: and item use is :x: (or whatever your system equivalent is). First thing I did!

Sort of related, I'm glad they have the option to hide objective markers. I always like to declutter the UI. However, they don't have the option to hide the combat controls, which was an option in Remake. Too bad.

I'm only in chapter 3 and I feel this is already happening lmao

I just bumped up the difficulty to Hard for now. Feels more appropriate again. :monster:

Had to look up what she said in the original because the usage of "GOAT" is a very obvious localization change.

Haven't played it just yet, but by the looks of combat, I really like how similar Zack's fighting style is to how Cloud's is in Remake. Imo it shows even more how much he's mimicking Zack. It makes me wonder how he'll fight post Lifestream scene though

They're similar but Zack's use of the Buster Sword is not the same as Punisher mode. Zack counters and uses strong attacks but he doesn't do the one-handed blade wielding like Cloud nor do a flurry of combos that stat boost like Cloud does. The difference is Cloud is far more aggressive, able to use the sword one-handed and is just overall more offense oriented with the Buster Sword, while Zack isn't.

On another note, CC-Reunion has made Costly Punch even easier to obtain. Thanks to Missions giving completion bonuses based on percentage done. At 35% you get the Rush Assault Limit Break materia.

Any "Punch" materia fused with a limit break materia creates Costly Punch.

The soonest you can get a "Punch" materia is Chapter 3 by getting to mission 4-4-4, stealing Goblin Punch from the boss, and then fusing it with the Rush Assault materia. :monster:

The soonest you could get limit break materia was from unlocking the Network Shop Shade in the Great Cavern of Wonders missions and getting there is extremely challenging.

I'm going for the plat for sure but boy, this is a completionist's nightmare. There are SO MANY missables in almost every chapter.
I'm saving on different slots constantly here. :wacky:
That's why I had to restart about 10 times in Banora.

Granted, I wasn't aware that there were Trophies associated with stuff in Banora until I got two of them.

Managed to do the stealth minigame in Modeoheim flawlessly on the first attempt. I remember it being a huge wtf am I even doing when I played it on PSP and I just brute forced my way in lmao
The minigames in this are some weird jank, it's almost charming

Anyway, Cody-Cloud continues to sound good. Burton never could make his voice sound believeably young.

Yeah, the game has improved A LOT of the mini-games from the PSP version.

Another example is in the Banora Missile mini-game. Now, there's a targeting cursor for that mini-game to make it easier to strike them with Zack's sword. Those hiding spots for the stealth mini-game also weren't in the PSP game. There are other examples too but they really are standout examples.

The amount of improvement in this game is really incredible. Another example is the materia Electrocute. It used to be total garbage because of it's random targeting. However, it's targeting and hit count is higher, meaning it no longer just whiffs with each casting. Nevermind all the command materia attacks, such as Thundaga Blade, Blizagga Blade, etc have had their hit counts and range increased so they deal more damage and are worth using!

Little things like that have really made this game so much better and an incredible remaster.

Just got to Junon. Got a new battle mechanic that adds a new stance to Zack’s combat.

I’m amazed at how much I’m enjoying this. If they tweaked the dialogue and did better animations for the smaller scenes, this would be a little closer to Remake quality. The graphics are awesome, and the better produced scenes are cool. The wonky animations for smaller scenes is really bad though. And dialogue is clearly written to match the Japanese timing, so it comes off awkward often

Just got to Aerith last night. So far impressions are good. I never actually hated CC's combat, but it's still absolutely vastly improved as everyone is saying. I use Command materia in particular so much more due to the mechanic of getting critical hits for combo-ing them off regular attacks. And magic materia is also just much more convenient to use, so I do a lot more.

The area maps/backgrounds I think are easily the most notable graphical improvement. Everything's really nice to look at. Especially since we can also move the camera so I can actually look around to admire them. I'm sure the mission maps will get as old as they did the first time. But they still feel novel for how good they look so far (also I haven't really attacked the missions super hard, as implied by my last post. Just getting summon materia, and accessory expansions, or if I see an item in the reward that want. Particularly AP Up, because now that I'm using Command materia a lot more, I'm always low on AP :wacky: )
Bahamut's new summon animation is awesome! Odin's got kinda nerfed, though...

The music remastering is more expansive than I was expecting. I didn't really expect anything noticeable, but there's a lot more choir work, or new sections of songs, like what Tetsujin mentioned in the boss theme. And a lot of battle themes have new sections. It is a little quiet, I feel like it's harder to hear them than it used to be. Also, minor quibble: they cut off the victory fanfare even sooner now, so you can't even hear the start of the FF7 coda part to it :( I didn't like that the original CC wouldn't let you listen to it, and now you don't get to hear any of it, haha.

The VO is a mixed bag. Genesis is undeniably better (specific example: at the end of the Junon fight FMV, and he says "I'll be fine. Don't worry," it is a way more natural delivery, and sounds like he's preemptively annoyed at them worrying.) Aerith is unsurprisingly better. Angeal is better, but frankly there's no saving most of his dialogue, lol. Unfortunately, Zack and Sephiroth are both worse, which is a shame because they're kinda the main thing you want to focus on.

But yeah, I'm enjoying myself, a little more than I expected to be, to be honest. In my time away from the game the things I've come to dislike about the story crystallize in my head, but I forget just how much I enjoy spending time in this world, whatever the context. :geek:

Got Crisis Core on Tuesday....

Beat Minerva on Friday :monster:

CC-Reunion actually makes it faster and easier to get to a post-game build than the original PSP version. Took down Minerva in Chapter 8 before heading to Nibelheim. Granted, the fight took 40 minutes but... :awesomonster:

It was grueling. My stats were:

Materia:
Hell Firaga MASTER- Atk +64
Mug MASTER- Spirit +50
Curaga MASTER- HP+ 999%
Costly Punch MASTER- Atk +34
Ultima 4 stars- Vitality +82
Darkness 3 stars- HP +490%

Accessories:
Adaman Bangle
Ziedrich
Genji Shield
Genji Glove

Stats
Atk: 255
Vit: 239
Mag: 157
Spr: 206
Lck: 43

HP: 72,569
MP: 291
AP: 307

Basically had to play super-carefully. I was not maxed out or optimized, just...barely able to hang and not get one-shotted by every attack she threw out. The fight was grueling. I sorta forgot how fucking cheesy Minerva's attacks can be. I relied on Aerith's Limit Break to tank through Judgment Arrow once, but then I messed up and got hit by another... And thankfully I managed to reduce it a little bit while my HP was overflowed because if I had not, I'd have died to it. Tried to rely on as many DMW limit breaks as possible and just.. Played super carefully. Was legit getting pissed when I kept getting so few limit breaks... I sorta feel like limit breaks in CC-R happen a bit less frequently than the PSP but maybe I'm wrong...

Those devs knew exactly what they were doing when they had Minerva holding 99 Phoenix Downs... :awesome: I used like, 30 of them or so.

Alas, I managed to beat her without Genji Armor, fully maxed stats, SP Guard, or Gil Toss. Just ole' fashioned dying, dying again, and punching her in the face for max damage! Yay!

Just got to Nibelheim, another notable line change

"You know, I've never seen you use that."

to

"I really like that sword, it's impressive."

:monster:

Zack having flashbacks to when he said the same thing to Angeal makes less sense now but it made even less sense for Zack somehow not using the sword despite using it...all the time...?

I got all the DMW scenes but one of Genesis' so I'm following Lex's example and letting it run all night lol. I don't even need the rubber band though, with auto regen Zack simply cannot die because he heals way faster than the guard can do damage

Oh thank goodness, that's perfect, lol.
Now, do they get rid of the "blunt side" nonsense?
