Just got to Aerith last night. So far impressions are good. I never actually hated CC's combat, but it's still absolutely vastly improved as everyone is saying. I use Command materia in particular so much more due to the mechanic of getting critical hits for combo-ing them off regular attacks. And magic materia is also just much more convenient to use, so I do a lot more.
The area maps/backgrounds I think are easily the most notable graphical improvement. Everything's really nice to look at. Especially since we can also move the camera so I can actually look around to admire them. I'm sure the mission maps will get as old as they did the first time. But they still feel novel for how good they look so far (also I haven't really attacked the missions super hard, as implied by my last post. Just getting summon materia, and accessory expansions, or if I see an item in the reward that want. Particularly AP Up, because now that I'm using Command materia a lot more, I'm always low on AP
)
Bahamut's new summon animation is awesome! Odin's got kinda nerfed, though...
The music remastering is more expansive than I was expecting. I didn't really expect anything noticeable, but there's a lot more choir work, or new sections of songs, like what Tetsujin mentioned in the boss theme. And a lot of battle themes have new sections. It is a little quiet, I feel like it's harder to hear them than it used to be. Also, minor quibble: they cut off the victory fanfare even sooner now, so you can't even hear the start of the FF7 coda part to it
I didn't like that the original CC wouldn't let you listen to it, and now you don't get to hear any of it, haha.
The VO is a mixed bag. Genesis is undeniably better (specific example: at the end of the Junon fight FMV, and he says "I'll be fine. Don't worry," it is a
way more natural delivery, and sounds like he's preemptively annoyed at them worrying.) Aerith is unsurprisingly better. Angeal is better, but frankly there's no saving most of his dialogue, lol. Unfortunately, Zack and Sephiroth are both worse, which is a shame because they're kinda the main thing you want to focus on.
But yeah, I'm enjoying myself, a little more than I expected to be, to be honest. In my time away from the game the things I've come to dislike about the story crystallize in my head, but I forget just how much I enjoy spending time in this world, whatever the context.
