Disney has no plans to make 2D animation movies anymore.

Can I say I actually prefer the 2D mixed with 3D animation personally? I loved what they did to the Beauty and the Beast's ballroom scene. Prince of Egypt is also a masterpiece in that regard. But yeah the younger generation now prefers the eye popping 3D graphics. It all started in Toy Story and Shrek and now it's come to this...

I also prefer 2D animation to 3D, not trying to make a dig on the latter though, both forms take an incredible amount of work, time, and energy to be made, just in different ways. Aesthetically though I just prefer 2D animation.

I too prefer 2D, though am partial to the kind of 3D animation that looks like 2D :awesome:. Granted, there is some awesome 3D animation, like the kind of stuff you find in games that bring fantasy stuff to life. That's a separate category though =p.

Hm. Random thought, maybe they can be a lot more expressive in CGI? As in, facial expressions and the like, more life-like and more accurately modeling human expressions (in ZOMG 3D) than they can with the more abstract 2D.

Alternatively, the good creative people behind the popular 80's and 90's Disney movies have all moved on or lost their touch, and it's the new generation behind the Pixar movies that made it to this century. I read Steve Jobs' biography the other day(s) and there's quite a bit about Pixar in there, and the apparent creative mismatch between Disney and Pixar. At one point during development of Toy Story, after processing feedback from Disney time and time again, the guys at Pixar (probably mostly the creative lead guy, Lasseter something something) went "Fuck you, I'm not turning Woody into an asshole" and they took charge.

The rest, as they say, is history :monster:.

Then again, it might not be a lack of creative genius, but supply and demand. iirc, the last 2D disney movie (what was it again?) was received positively, but it didn't sell too well. Back to the 3D thing with the expressions and action and visuals, I guess. I don't think the CGI itself is what impresses people anymore (it was when Toy Story came out), particularly seeing that kids grew up with it, so that just leaves the contents.

Wait, wasn't Shrek made by Disney's mortal enemy, Dreamworks?

And speaking of Toy Story, that's one of the Disney movies I want to get a world in KH3, along with Star Wars.

I'm not surprised that they haven't got any plans for a 2D feature, but it's still kind of a bummer.

I think embracing 3D at the expense of 2D probably has more to do with business matters than anything. Like, the execs see that 3D animated films earn more than 2D ones and automatically chalk it up to the 3D/2D difference and ignore any other factors. I dunno about which is necessarily more expressive than the other (though I would imagine with 3D there's a greater risk of falling into uncanny valley territory), but I'm sure there are artistic advantages and disadvantages with both 2D and 3D - I just get the sense the economic advantages were the bigger factor.

I prefer 2D, but I like 3D, as well. I'd be cool to see Disney experiment more with hybrid styles, though. I mean, I dunno how much they were willing to innovate with 2D and continuing with it just as a throwback to tradition wouldn't have been good, either.

When you said shorts, I thought you mean the clothing article :awesome:. I think there is a lot of charm to the old style disney cartoons, like of the steamboat willy era and such.

Yesterday I watched The Nightmare Before Christmas, Dumbo, and Alice in Wonderland(the original one not the Tim Burton one). And I must say, throughout the first one and the last one, alot of the time I was like "hey, I remember going to this place in Kingdom Hearts". It's quite interesting to rewatch Disney movies after playing the Kingdom Hearts games. And regarding Dumbo, I doubt it would get the G-rating it has had it been made nowadays, given the scene where Dumbo and the mouse accidentally get drunk, as well as the crows who are clearly based off black stereotypes from back then. But yeah, they were all great movies. And since I brought up Kingdom Hearts, do we know when they're gonna make the third game yet? Have they even started developing it yet? If they haven't, get on it Nomura! And you better include a Star Wars world!

Yeah, saying Disney movies are just for kids should be considered laughable because Walt Disney himself said he made movies for everyone.Yeah,in a lot of older Disney movies there is some smoking as well.Actually if I remember Walt Disney died mainly because of the fact he got lung cancer from smoking.

Yep. As a matter of fact the lead crow in Dumbo was smoking a cigar, and the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland was smoking a hookah. And that indeed is how Walt Disney died.

That new Mickey short is pretty good. I like the art style quite a bit (though I can't help but think of the American Akira parody when I look at Mickey's scooter :awesome: ). Looking forward to more of them, in any case.

I wouldn't expect anything's happening with a non-spinoff KH until Versus is finished. :monster:

I like that new Mickey short that took place in France. It seems to a throw back to his 30's personality.I heard future shorts will take place in other countries as well like Italy,Japan,England, etc.

^Each of the four window things look like they've been done in one take. I'm guessing this guy has had a lot of practice =p.
